so after a few days of some intense consideration, i have decided to attend vcu! it was a tough decision between their program and nyu's, as i have wanted to go to nyu for over a year now, but i am very happy with my decision. the tuition for vcu is tons cheaper than nyu and their program is ranked slightly higher. other things that played into my decision were the cost of living (so much lower than where i am at now), the amount of things to do in richmond, the huge array of field placement options, and that vcu has a certificate of aging studies program which is perfect as i want to work with older adults. so happy this decision is over and good luck to all of those waiting to hear back from schools or grappling of choosing!

thank you all very much for your input, i really appreciate it! i have decided to attend vcu because i realized that i am more interested in living in new york than actually attending vcu. i am completely confident with my decision because vcu's program is ranked slightly higher than nyu, it is loads cheaper, and it has a specialized program for the sector of the population i want to work for. thanks again for the help in choosing a school! best to you all! -
hey guys! as a last resort i figured i would get some much needed advice from everyone! i was accepted to the masters in social work program at both nyu and vcu (richmond, va). i am really torn choosing between each school because there are pros and cons to each. while i would really love to move to nyc and start a new adventure in my life, the debt i accrue from my education (around 50k) mixed with the outrageous price of living is so off putting. at vcu, i will only pay around 20k for two years, they have a certificate program for my concentration, and it is close to my family and boyfriend of 5 years. from current or past grad students, do you think that going into extreme debt is worth the experience to study social work at nyu? please help!

just wanted to let you all know that i finally got my acceptance letter! relieved...not to make the hard decision of choosing a school! maybe we will all be classmates in the fall

I'm responding because I know it is such a pain to wait around and trying to figure out when everyone else applied and when they were accepted. I sent in all my stuff February 5th and got my acceptance April 11th. Good luck, hope you hear back soon

thanks for giving me some comfort! i am really hoping to hear back sometime this week since i just got my acceptance letter from nyu yesterday and need to make some type of decision as id really like to know what i am doing before i graduate! and i am absolutely DYING to live in new york. boston i just want to go to. i saw that movie the town and have wanted to go since then...but probably only for a visit. the only thing with new york is the price! nyu is pricy even with the scholarship but then the cost of living...it is so intimidating. im willing to be broke for a few years for the experience though, but i really do want to go to vcu at the same time!!!

i got an email that took me to the application site.

I'm pretty sure you have lived everywhere I want to live and now you are coming here, so funny! I am hoping I will hear from them soon, as I know people who have gotten responses. I am worried though because I don't have the bio pre-req, I planned on taking it in the summer if i got accepted. i have a really good gpa and a lot of volunteer experience, but am worried they will choose someone over me because of this. I did email the director of admissions for the program to let her know that I did intend to take the class over the summer so hopefully she jotted my name down somewhere to tell the committee hopefully we'll be classmates in the fall, i am definitely keeping my fingers crossed!

Did they say why you were rejected from GMU? I'm from the area and George Mason's rep isn't that well known so I am surprised you got into bigger name schools and not there. That is crazy! But congrats on the other programs you were accepted into!!

Has anyone heard from NYU lately? I submitted all my stuff February 1st and am just wondering when I will hear anything!

VCU's program looks fantastic. I haven't been on a tour or anything, but I have researched their program extensively. Their program is highly ranked, the tuiton is more than reasonable, they have a ton of specialized concentrations, as well as placement sites. I'm from Virginia Beach and Richmond has always had a pretty miserable reputation, but I love it there. There is so much to do- great restaurants, museums, coffee joints, art exhibits and festivals. I also love their campus! I haven't recieved any word from VCU minus the fact that I made it trhough their preliminary screening of the applications. I submitted my app January 31st and am dying to hear from them. When did you guys apply and hear back. I am just wondering because they said it could take until May 15th. I would really like to know where I am going before I graduate!

I didn't apply for geriatric concentration, but that is what I am going to pursue. Which schools made you apply for that up front?

I haven't, but I just turned all of my stuff in recently. I live close to VCU and I hear that they only let a small number of students in, but I guess we will see! Keep me updated
