Hello, all. Well I got the letter this morning, and I was offered a CGS. My score was 22.2, my GPA was 4.0, no publications, a couple of grad conferences, a major national exhibition (falls under artistic contributions, or something), presumably good reference letters. I was doing this kind of weird laugh cry hyperventilate thing when I read the letter. I'm extra pleased because I'm in Fine Arts, which isn't exactly a favourite for funding with our present government. Anyway, I just wanted to say, especially to the people going into first year who get turned down, chin up. Last year I was waitlisted with a score of 16.7 or something, and I was devastated. But things sometimes work out even better in the long run. So keep the faith, and good luck to all.

Actually, if you want a more accurate guage, look through last years forum. You'll be able to see when people started to get their letters, and several days when I got my rejection. :-( Okay, I just went through last years posts, and it was about three days later that we got word in St. John's. Still, three days of hell, followed by disappointment.

Oh Eggs, get ready for a long tortured wait. When I was in St. John's last year, being the last to know just about killed me. It took an extra five or so days after people in Ontario started getting their results.

I have this sinking feeling that things aren't going to go well for me. I just hope I get the letter tomorrow, so I can be put out of my misery.

Good Lord, Needfunds. All I said was that it's possible to get a CGS without publications if your proposal is strong enough. Nothing more, nothing less. So, enough with your pretentious and condescending attitude.

I think Oxforddphil is right. Publications aren't the be all and end all. One of my classmates last year got a CGS and I know that he had no publications, no conferences, no teaching. His references would have been very good, but not rockstars in his field. He did however have a Masters SSHRC, and an absolutely stellar proposal that he worked on for about six months. And I'm pretty sure that's what got him the big bucks.

I'm trying to be optimistic. Last year I was seventh on the waitlist. So close yet still so very, very far. This year I re-submitted the same proposal, but after getting feedback from three well-positioned faculty members, I have a year of my PhD under my belt, two more academic scholarships, a conference, an exhibition at a national museum, and much stronger letters of recommendation. I've heard through the grapevine that people on the SSRCH panel at my university thought I had a really strong proposal. But all that said, I'm steeling myself for disappointment. I figure if I don't get a SSHRC, I'll get an OGS. I believe I'll get something. I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic here. Sadly, I know what rejection feels like. Oh hell. I don't know. Anything can happen. The world can be cruel.

Thanks, Sabb. I wrote to SSHRC and got a confirmation today, so all is well. Or at least, well enough. I'm in the running, which is the best one can hope for at this point.

Is there anybody else out there who has received conformation by their university that they were being forwarded, but have not had a confirmation of receipt from SSHRC? I had a confirmation from SSHRC in January last year, but this year have heard nothing. I'm getting nervous that I have somehow fallen through the cracks.

I'm at the University of Western Ontario, and we're able to track the progress of all applications for external scholarships online, through "student central." I noticed yesterday that I've been nominated by the university for both OGS and SSHRC. I hope I have better luck than last year. Last year, I wasn't eligible for OGS, because I was moving to Ontario from Newfoundland, and I was wait-listed by SSHRC. However, this year, I have a year of my PhD under my belt, more scholarships, and better references, so hopefully it will bump my profile up a few notches into the "funded" category. One can only hope.

A friend of mine posted on facebook today that she received her MA sshrc grant. She is based in Toronto. Hope that helps those of you who are waiting with baited breath.
