  1. I've also been getting the, "you'll get in everywhere, I'm certain of it" comments. While it's nice to have the moral support, this opinion is not based in fact, so it does little to alleviate my anxiety.

I can't tell you how many people I've had to say things like "thanks for the optimism, but that's not how it works when the humanities aren't all that well funded and most of my programs only accept those they can fund" then they look at me like I'm an idiot

  2. I agree with pears. I can see the end of my sanity about a mile off, and that's being a humanities person! I feel like the vagueness of what is weighted more in our programs is both a blessing and a hindrance-in some ways it'd be nice to know what they're using but it does make it easier to justify your self-worth no matter the answer

  3. My biggest policy push would be to send out rejections as soon as someone is no longer in the running, so that they can all move on.

Clearly not going to cut it? Rejection email ASAP!

Decent candidate, but looks like a bad fit? Rejection letter today!

On further reflection, we're inviting a bunch of other people for interviews (and there won't be enough spots for them, so there's definitely not a spot for this other candidate!)? Rejected now!!

Came out for the interview and was a total jerk / intolerable diva / just plain bad fit? Rejection email NAO!

I'd be the Oprah of rejection letters.  YOU get a rejection, and YOU get a rejection, and YOU GET A REJECTION!!  YAAAAAAAHHHHHH!

yes yes yes YES!. I've been saying it all along to friends, family, and really anyone who will listen to me babble on and on mindlessly. you know that no matter the program they eventually come down to an initial cut-if they do that initial cut 3 weeks after the deadline why wait another 3 months?

    1. Standardized applications. DEAR LORD. STANDARDIZED APPLICATIONS. One program, all your information.

    2. Lower the damn application fee.

    3. Have adcomms release dates of decision in advance.

    4. Funding. Enough said.

oh standardized apps-I seriously had to double check that I had my birthday and name spelled right 2984734883 times on all my separate apps because I was paranoid about a typo. By doing this you would lower the blood pressure of candidates 50 points, which would be most appreciated come decision season

  4. pears: I feel you. It's been nearly 3 months since 2 of my apps went in (Dec. 15) and it's been 8 weeks since the other 2. one programs told us to expect decisions in early March so I'm chomping at the bit on that one because some PhD only candidates (I'm MA/PhD) have been notified. It's driving me absolutely insane that I still have no idea on these 2-like I said, I'm pretty sure I know the answer for the other 2, although hope is never 100% gone until the letter is in front of me. I might join you in being a ball under a desk until I get decisions

  5. tested the waters this morning and sent my first "sooo.. what's the adcomm's status as far as decisions go right now?" email.

brb, spending the rest of the day curled up under my desk like a ball of nerves until i get a response.

I give you kudos for your courage-I'm dying to do the same, but I feel like I know 2 of the answers and I'm afraid for the other 2

  6. sent an email to UNC a few days ago, got a response a few moments ago with the unofficial rejection. Very kind of her to let me know so that I wouldn't have to sit around waiting, as she said my rejection letter will come around "eventually"

what's interesting is that I had worked with a prof in the dept. at my undergraduate so my former profs thought with their program being new and my contact, that I would stand a better chance. Clearly not so lucky

  7. Thanks, notaprettygrrrl and phigirl! Here's hoping good news is coming. Hope the rest of the universities get some responses out soon.

and congrats, sidewalks and phigirl on your acceptance notices from GWU and SUNY Buffalo, respectively! Getting an acceptance is great news!

wasn't me on either GWU or SUNY. didn't apply to either of those programs, but here's to hoping I'll have something to be congratulated about soon! :D

  8. I got into the University of Wyoming!!!! So excited!!!!!!!!!!!

    congrats!

March 15...probably only for rejections. Harvard has historically sent out acceptance letters around Feb 23rd. I sorta want to ask...but I'm too nervous!!   I'm pretty sure theyve made decisions already...at least short lists. What March 15 deadline are you talking about? The April 15 deadline? I'm not aware of any deadline they have over there at Am Civ. in March. Share info please...

had shared previously, but I talked with GSAS a while ago because of needing to update an email addy. They said that there were no guarantees on when notifications were going out but that as a school every letter leaves the dept. by March 15. Seems everywhere this year I've applied to is notifying later than they historically have. I think March 1 is the earliest we'll hear personally, but only time will tell. I'm just not getting myself worked up over anything until then because it doesn't seem worth it.
