  1. I'm hoping someone can help me/ give me any info or advise!! I've been admitted to the RCA and the SLADE for the fall for my masters (both in LONDON). I live in los angeles and really want to go to school in london but am having a terrible time deciding which one is right for me. ANY info or thoughts would be appreciated!!

    xxalex

first, congratulations! second, I have no advice to give regarding your prospective schools but I'm sure someone else eventually will. HOWEVER, until then no need to spam the forum with multiple posts of the same question.

  2. got a phone call from Wash U this morning, they offered me a spot! waiting for the $$ info in the mail

yeaaah! congratulations! the campus is awesome and I really enjoyed my visit but it was just not the right program for me. hopefully the funding works out for you!

  3. Most places have a pool or allow you access to a pool at one of their other properties. The problem is that some places have massive pools and are known for their pool parties. In those situations the neighborhoods get loud and parking becomes near impossible.

Spyglass has a pool and it stays pretty quiet and relaxed and there are a number of places like that. If you ask the property manager they will most likely let you know and may be able to make a suggestion for other places to look since most places are run by the same 2-3 companies.

As for the specific ones you mentioned I only know of Towne Parc. I looked at them and I don't remember why but I decided against living there. The area that they are located has a lot of housing that is both undergrads and grads. My first apartment was actually about a block away in Countryside where I lived with 3 graduate students.

Verdant Cove is really far from campus, and just about anything, but you won't have to worry about noise out there. The public transportation out there is limited but it does exist (the FHP office is nearby and I know it runs there, not sure about any further.)

The other ones are in locations that a lot of undergrads would probably avoid so I would expect them to be reasonably quiet.

Areas to watchout for, aside from the ones with big pools, would be midtown (the area directly north or east of campus) and the student ghettos. Checkout craigslist and contact some realtors in the area as well. There is a housing glut in Gainesville and it's almost impossible to accurately consider all your options.

yea. not interested in pool parties..

spyglass looks nice but a little bit towards the higher end of my budget (I'm specifically looking for a 1br in the 500-650 range). I'll put it on my list though for places to check out. I saw som craigslist ads for apartments in the oaks condominum and hawthorne reserve... would you happen to know anything about either of those?

regardless thanks for the input! really helps a lot!

  4. I shared a townhouse in Spyglass when I lived there and if I were going back to Gainesville for grad school it is the first place I would look. Quiet neighborhood, nice place, and cheap.

I also lived in Hidden Lake and really liked the apartment (it was a two bedroom villa with a backyard) but it got really noisy on the weekends and public transportation is bad on the north side of town.

If you don't want a "nice" place but can tolerate something a little older and lived in then Sunrise Apartments on 23rd aren't terrible.

I would avoid places with big fancy pools or that only offer 4 bedroom/individual leases. Places like Cabana Beach, The Polos, etc are good for undergrad housing but get pretty noisy.

There are a lot of places available in Gainesville are many are open to negotiation so call around.

thanks for the recs! I'm also looking at apartments for the fall.. do you know anything about verdant cove (seems like it was remodeled and renamed recently?), towne parc, point west, or williamsburg village? I do want access to a pool but also quiet and not undergrad dominated.

  5. It's down to the wire. I want to go to Berkeley but they offer little in the way of stipends -- full funding but only 5k stipend in the second year. UC Davis is offering me stipends during my entire time there totaling 8k per year as well as full tuition funding.

So there's a good chance that I would have to borrow some money to go to Berkeley (probably only a little 5-10k). I would not need to borrow any money while at Davis.

I have some savings that would be totally used up in living expenses if I went to Berkeley. If I went to Davis I would use the savings to pay down loans from undergrad, so not only would school be free but I'd come out with less student loan debt than I went in with (but not debt free).

But overall I think Berkeley has a better reputation (?). Plus they are closer to other artists and art professionals because of the SF bay area, but living in Berkeley is super expensive. On the other hand Davis is in the boonies, which has it's plus and minuses.

Ugh. I didn't think this would be so hard!

    Forum thoughts?

I agree. go where you want to go and don't worry about 10k. it's really not going to make it or break it in the future. however, if money is a big priority to you, I'd say go to Davis. you just have to decide what your priorities are. go where your heart desires or where you will feel more financially secure. either way I don't think you can go wrong. or flip a coin! seriously. it works. you will know.

  6. I totally get it. I even had a professor email and call me this morning to try to get me to still go there even though I declined and said I had accepted another offer.. just makes it so much harder! I already committed! why couldn't you try this hard a little earlier?! the main reason I declined there was financial so when she's now asking me for another 24h to see if they can get funding it's hard! on the other hand, they've known about my situation for over a week and had plenty of time to get back to me regarding funding.. seriously.. I just want to feel a hundred percent sure I made the right choice!

  7. hey all! I just decided to attend UF as well :) if anyone have any apartment complexes to recommend let me know! or know anything about towne parc apartments or verdant cove? I get the sense that verdant cove was recentely renovated (and renamed?) so it doesn't have any reviews. hopefully I can make it down there and check it out soon!

  8. made my decision as well - florida it is! it was tough but in the end I went for the place with most funding and where I'd rather live for the next 3 years.. my overall experience is that it's easy to get caught up in everything and get "seduced" by certain programs for various reasons but in the end you just have to consider what's most important to you. I had my heart set on vcu for a long time but it didn't work out and I'm sure it's for a reason :)

  9. Crazy right. Yeah I could do that, but I ultimately made the decision to decline those programs and will stick to it. Just can't believe my top choice strung me along for so long. Oh well, it's not the end of the world. So, here's to doing it all again next year. At least I'll get to excitedly check my mailbox again next Feb/March.

yea, thats pretty shitty but however cliche it may sound.. everything happens for a reason!

  10. I had turned down all of my acceptances except my top choice only to learn yesterday that my funding was not approved by the graduate school and there would be no financial aid offered at all other than loans. This was very upsetting news to receive. Guess I'll be doing this thing again next year. This iwhole process is utterly ridiculous!

damn. I'm sorry. it may be a long shot but what if you contact on of the schools you declined? when I declined one school's offer they said specifically to contact them "if the program I selected didn't meet my expectations". I guess you just have to be very sincere about it and explain your situation and that you regret declining their offer initially. I have no experience with this but what do you have to lose really?

  11. Okay, I decided. Yale. woot. I applied to a bunch of places and got in so hopefully the wait list will start to move. All the best!

congrats!! that is awesome! wish I could make up my mind soon so I'd have this over with.. did you apply to VCU by any chance? B)

  12. ....i need another month to make this decision.

I'm with you on that one...

got ONE week! no idea what to do. obviosuly I'm not complaining that I have choices. very happy and grateful for that but I can't visit the schools and can't figure out what "feels" right.. sure, I could go for the money but the difference is only like $2000/year. Arizona seems like the better photo program on paper (and obviously in rankings) but I'm weirdly drawn to Florida and got a good feeling about it early on when talking to the faculty there, although they do very different work than I.. but I don't know if I got that feeling simply because I didn't think the other programs were options then and just tried to get my mind set on it. damn. I'm confused haha. this whole process messes with your head a little for sure.

I really REALLY wish I'd get off the waitlist at VCU   but they only take 5 so I'm going to pretend it's not an option.

  13. don't you live in indiana?  you shouldn't be charged out of state tuition.  the first letter they sent me said i was being charged out of state tuition (with a very small tuition remission) and i freaked out and called them and it turns out they made a mistake and sent me the wrong letter.  you should check to make sure you got the right letter.

if for some reason you did get the right letter, if you do live in indiana and will have lived there at least 12 months you can apply for a residency change with the school.  it looks like a big pain (lot of paperwork) but would potentially save you a lot of money.  there is a stupid clause in the letter i got, though, that said if my residency changed then i would forfeit the tuition remission.  it would still be much cheaper to be charged instate with no remission than out of state with remission.

i'd be really interested to know whether you got the wrong letter.  i know that both of the people in charge of the grad program literally just took on those duties a few weeks ago, so they must be going through all kinds of chaos.

ah ok. I don't think I did since I'm an international student. I have lived in Indiana for the past 5 years though so it's kind of bs. but since I'm a "non-immigrant alien" I'm not eligble for residency (I think that's how it works)

  14. Hi everyone,

I got accepted to Calarts and received my financial aid information. However, I was not given very much - does anyone have experience with asking for more money? (have you been successful?) I know that it is very expensive to attend, and I am an international student, so I don't qualify for FAFSA. Any advice would be great!

    thank you.

do you have any other offers that you are considering that offer better funding?

the way I recently went about it was being open and honest about my situation and that although I'm very interested in X school, it's not feasible for me financially and I have to consider other offers. just be sincere and acknowledge that you don't want money to be the deciding factor but that's unfortunately the case.. and instead of directly asking for more money you can ask if there are any additional funding opportunities or work positions you can apply for to still make it work since X school is your top choice or something like that.

however, if you don't have other financially better offers that you are considering I wouldn't lie obviously..

I also get the sense that it helps if you contact the director of your specific program or a professor that you have been in contact with throughout the process as opposed to financial aid since they have a better sense of who you are and obviously want you in their program. they will probably then refer you to someone else but I think it's good to have someone vouch for you.

but I'm no expert on the grad admission/funding process by any means! just speaking from my own experience.

  15. yeah, herron is expensive.  especially compared to IUB.  the tuition is almost TWICE as much!!!!!  Argh!!!!  i thought i was alone in not getting much funding, but perhaps they are stingy in general.  their fellowships are also not very generous, and the money goes directly to tuition (I thought it would be like getting a paycheck, guess not).  :(  i was very happy with my visit, though, and i think it would be a good school for me.  i'd still rather go to IUB but it feels like the chances of that are getting smaller as each day passes.

agreed! it's almost more than my private liberal arts undergrad! even with the 3500/year fellowship I'd need to borrow 40k. just seems odd to me that all these other schools are offering tutition waivers while they are charging out of state tuition (for me at least) and offering funding to cover no more than 20%. it's just not feasible for me at all and they are not even close to competing to some other state school programs in terms of funding. is it because its such a new program you think?

  16. That's great that you applied for schools all over the place. A few years ago, I made the decision to stay in Indiana instead of moving out west (I love hiking and I really wanted to move to a little remote town somewhere with mountains) I stayed here for my BF because he wanted to start his undergrad. I knew this was a 4 year commitment and I really wanted to support his decision and make it work for us. All I can say is it felt right for me to stay... Job prospects here suck and you get paid very little, but luckily once I made the decision to stay I got a full time job and I even managed to buy a small house. It's been great but I do have the what if moments a lot... I could only apply to 2 schools (IU and IUPUI) and it looks like i'll be commuting to IUPUI since IU hasn't responded (ugh!).  So anyways, long story short, there were a lot of tough decisions, and I am glad I stayed with my BF through and through... When he is done with his undergrad in 2 years, I will be done with my MFA so he decided I get to choose where we get to move together depending on my job prospects. Good luck and do what feels right, you'll still have the what if moments in either case but you'll know the decision you made is the right one.

don't get me wrong- I love indiana! haha

I'm still very much considering herron due to the fact that I feel pretty "invested" in Indiana. I'm originally from Sweden and came here as an international student but little did I know that I was going to fall in love with a good ole country boy haha. his family lives in indy and that's very much where he sees himself in the future due to his profession so I could potentially see myself here as well. so herron would be good if I do want to stay in this area but it doesn't have the reputation as some of the other schools (yet). BUUUUT the funding is not so good. with out of state tuition I'd have to shell out another 40k+. so I can't justify that compared to my other offers simply because of its location close to my bf.

however, they did call me up today after I inquired about the fellowship 2nd semester (and potential for more funding) and they were going to see what they could do! he asked about my other offers so they know that there is a slim chance unless they can come up with a lot more to make it worth it. we shall see........... they seem very accomodating though and it's nice that they are trying to really get me there and make it work as opposed to another unnamed school ;)

    have you visited herron btw?

  17. aaaaah! finally get the meaning behind this freak-out forum...

I was a nervous wreck waiting to hear back from schools but now I'm even more anxious as everything is becoming more "real" and I actually have to make a decision. I went into the admission process with the mindset that I probably wouldn't get in and that it would be good practice for next years applications SO now that I actually have some pretty great offers I have NO IDEA what to do.

it doesn't help that my boyfriend of 3 years will be in saint louis for the next 3 years for his schooling and although he's being supportive and wants me to "do what makes me happy" its evident that me deciding to head out west or down south for 3 years could be a major blow to our relationship. it just sucks that I have to be the "bad guy" (choosing school over him)... but it's also not that I want to go and he doesn't want me to-- part of me doesn't want to go either because I don't want to move that far away from him and at the same time the schools closers are not feasible financially or a good fit/the program I want to go to. BUT this is my dream! ya know...

I know noone will be able to tell me what to do but it would be kind of nice if I didn't have to choose. can't I have it all? :)

  18. So a little update. Yesterday, while speaking to one of the professors at the school I plan on going to, I mentioned that I had sent an email out to the graduate program and hadnt heard back. She gave me the assistant dean's email address and told me to email her if I havent heard back from the assistant dean in a few days. I emailed the assistant dean yesterday around noon , still haven't heard back. It's beyond frustrating. If I don't hear anything by tomorrow evening I'll email the professor. I have a tour of the campus on Thursday, so I may end up bringing it up then. In the mean time, I'm touring apartments in Boston, have a weekend long convention to go to, trying to get hired in the city,  and  traveling to New Orleans next Tuesday, will be there for a week. I can't wait to be finished with this....

(keep in mind the initial email was sent aweek ago and there still hasnt been even one response back)

Edit: so apparently due to the snow we had last night, 5-8 inches. The school is closed today... I'm assuming that includes the offices. I guess I'll wait until the end of Thursday to contact the professor.

    any news arsenic?

I'm considering asking for more funding from 2 schools but I'm not sure how to go about it. How long/detailed was your letter and did you mention other offers?

  19. Have you talked with the Director of Admissions Anthony Scott? He is the one that I have been discussing funding with... I also applied to another program at Herron and they have not given me any information yet and can neither confirm or deny that I got in, so I'm assuming they are holding out to see if they got acceptances from the first round... Has anyone confirmed that they are indeed going to Herron for Photo? I emailed the lady at IUB yesterday and she has not sent me a response yet. I need to make a decision soon and am frustrated that the other programs haven't given me a straight answer or an answer at all... It's only major life decisions you know...

IUB is a great school. I've lived here for 10 years, I came here for undergrad and still here! Hold out as long as you can for IUB, you won't regret it.

I got an email from Herron photo where she mentioned that they had heard back from two students so far.. I didn't think the funding was too great for me. with out of state tuition I need to come up with 45k.. so it doesn't seem like I'll be going there. especially with my offer from Florida! seems like a great program though and I may still go for a visit.

  20. yay!  i got a call from Herron saying I'm accepted!  they're going to email me some info early next week.  yayyyy!  yayyyy!!!!!  i was feeding my animals and the dogs started to dance around when they realized how excited i was.  yayyyyyy!!!!!!

congrats! I got the same call/info from grad admissions today although I received a call last week from photo specifically too. can't wait to hear what they have to offer :)

  21. what's up with schools asking where they rank on my list of choices? before I've even heard about funding.. (hey that actually determines a lot!) I guess just to gauge my interest but I don't know. it just caught me off guard. like what am I supposed to say? tell them all they are my top choice? haha I try to be somewhat honest and just say it's among my choices or "up there" and that I'm trying to gather all information before I make a decision. just curious what their motive is by asking? does my response change anything?
