  1. What's the deal with SAIC photo? I know some people on here have received interviews. but their fb page says that they'll send out notifications within the next 2 weeks. are those rejections then? or acceptances based on the interviews? both? I'm assuming I got rejected at this point but I just want to know for sure! are their interviews this weekend btw!

  2. Hi everyone,

I just registered and I'm new to the forums. I've come seeking advice for MFA interviews and I saw this thread. Sounds like a lot of you are applying to the same places that I am. I have an interview at SAIC on Mar 2nd that I am flying in for and I am looking for advice (for Graduate interviews in general in relation to the arts, but specifically for SAIC would be nice.) I'm the first of my family to pursue a career in art, I just graduated with my BFA last year, and as you might expect my family doesn't have much advice to offer me when it comes to stuff like this.

I understand the the interview at SAIC is a bit like a "hang out with students of the program" for the day kind of thing. But what else can I expect to happen on my interview day?

    • What kind of attire or dress code is there for an interview? I don't expect that it is too formal (suit and tie) but I don't want to be under-dressed either. Would a nice collared shirt and nice pair of jeans be okay? E.G. Smart casual/Business casual. I kind of have an artist stereotype look going for me, but I don't want that to hinder my chances. I don't want to look like I slob or bum though.
    • I was told I should bring an additional portfolio of work. Since I am flying in I can't bring a lot of stuff, so I've brought my mini-magazine/artist book that I publish every month with new work/in progress work so I can talk about that. Do you think this would be okay to show them? Or should I just bring more work on a flash drive? I do feel that having a book to show would be more interesting than perhaps a slideshow on a projector.
    • The other problem I have is....is that I submitted a lot of different works in my portfolio. It shows that I have a variety of work, but what if they are only interested in a specific group of work that I have done? How do I know what work they are interested in seeing? Is it just a shot in the dark?
    • I saw someone post a list of questions typically asked in an interview. Does anyone have any additional resources in regards to questions I should be able answer?
    • If you've had an interview at SAIC or attended SAIC, any other advice you have to offer would be incredibly valuable to me.

Thanks everyone for your time. In time I hope to share my experience with you all.

congrats on your interview! I haven't heard anything at all from SAIC so I'm assuming rejection. anyways, I think you should wear whatever you feel comfortable in but maybe not too dressed up? I think the magazine sounds interesting! but maybe also bring a few prints from one series? I'd probably avoid flashdrive/projector since that's how they've already seen your work.. I'm sure they'd probably like to se physical work? note: I've never had an interview there so I'm just guessing! I would just call/email and ask if you are unsure.. I'm sure they get that all the time.

also, type in "interview" in the search bar. there is a tread with TONS of questions. I used those to prepare for my phone interview with one school and it really helped. however, they only asked the common questions (why grad school/why this school, tell me about your work, influences etc)

  3. just had my phone interview with VCU. I think it went okay. I did my best and we will see what happens but when he was telling me more about the program I just wanted to yell "your program is perfect for meeeee!" haha I'll definitely be disappointed if I get rejected. it seems like such an awesome school!

anyways.. the questions were: "talk me through the work in your portfolio", "what interests you about VCU?" "what are some of your influences? (artists, authors etc)" "tell me something else about your self/what do you like to do outside of your art practice?" and  "do you have any questions..." to which I asked him to tell me more about the program/a typical week/interaction with faculty and also how often students engage with each other across disciplines within the school of art... I think that was it.. *crossing fingers like a maniac*

  4. Accepted for MFA painting at VCU for the fall. Full tuition paid, plus $10,000 stipend and teaching assistantship.

Just had my interview on the 18th, couldn't believe the quick turnaround!

Hurray! Anyone else? Still awaiting interviews at Tyler and Cornell, and haven't heard a peep out of Columbia. Glad to know I will be going somewhere!!!!!

congrats! that's awesome! I have a phone interview on Tuesday for photo.. how was your interview?

  5. Congrats longfeb (I like your name) and hdsl!!

Still crickets for me...but hopefully something soon. Here's where I'm at:

I did not get an interview notification from SAIC, so just waiting for the rejection letter.

After completing my application, I received an email from RIT of their timeframe, which would put me hearing approx. the end of this week.

I recently spoke with someone from Columbia College and was told they do not interview for photo, notifications go out via snail mail and prob phone call, with an approx. timeframe of three weeks from now.

I'm expecting rejection from SAIC as well. maybe there is still hope since only two people from the forum have heard from them and they are both abroad.. however, with interviews coming up soon I highly doubt it. oh well! I wasn't set on SAIC anyways and I'm definitely grateful for my two acceptances so far. I hope you hear some good news from RIT this week!

  6. Just wondering, when you check the status of your online application, is there any marker in the "status" box towards the bottom of the page where the materials are listed? Thanks and congratulations!

no, there's nothing in the status column. my application also says incomplete items outstanding but I think that's because I'm an international and the system is asking for a toefl score even though I got a waiver..

  7. Congrats!

I got accepted there too, did the faculty who called you happen to mention when they're going to notify about funding? That's going to be a big part of my decision making too, bu maybe I'll see you there!

congrats to you too! what medium?

no they just said that they would forward their decision to graduate admission and that I would get an official letter in the mail and scholarship info later on. didn't give a timeline though..
