@emeraldsapphire Just to check, that's your interview up on the results page?
-
Congrats on that interview. If there's nothing in my email today I will probably check Duke off the list.
-
thank you both for the responses. I had a conversation with the area director who explained they leave it open ended so that applicants can send the piece they most want to send. Could be 10 pages, could be 50. They want the most representative piece you want to submit. But you could go crazy trying to figure that out from the application materials ?
-
Here's a question for the group. Most applications have a desired page range (20+) for writing samples. But what if they don't have a given standard size for the writing sample? would you send a shorter paper that you like more? Or a longer paper to demonstrate capacity? For those on the other side of the admissions process, what do you think a committee would rather read?

3 of 4 applications in. Waiting to talk to one more school. Hopefully everything is wrapped up by next week (the outstanding application has a Jan 2 submission date). Still waiting on recommendations all over the place though. I need to get back to thesis writing since any offer would be contingent on finishing this degree first. I'll be happy to get back to work soon.

I'm hoping to wrap up PhD/ThD applications this week so that I can return to thesis writing ASAP. I had one waitlist and one rejection in the fall 2020 cycle so I decided to go an STM and try again in a couple years, and now here we are. I think it will be four schools this year by the time I finish: Notre Dame, Toronto, Catholic University, and Duke. My primary areas of interest are liturgy and homiletics. I'm hoping that the STM is the door opener, as opposed to having been applying with an MDiv alone the first time.
-
Finally 0-for-2 on Phd programs. Figured it was a bit of a flier with an MDiv only. Plan to start STM next fall (hopefully in person at the going rate) and then start applying again in a couple years. Well done and good luck to everyone starting something in the fall. Hopefully I remember my password when I come back here for the next round of applications.

Official Notre Dame rejection letter finally arrived. Nothing significant content wise. Just an update for anyone who's keeping track.

@professionalmethodist I had a moment this afternoon when i looked at my phone and it said Garrett, only to see the admissions newsletter. ?
-
Not a peep. The admissions folks said late February to early March. I saw someone posted an interview in the results for systematics Phd a couple weeks ago. Not sure what program you're looking at.
-
I have no idea what the official policy is. A friend of mine did have an interview of some type with them a year or two ago--but that may or may not be their policy. They may have just had more questions for him.

Hard to imagine not getting googled applying for jobs or schools nowadays. My top Google result is a comedically bad newspaper article about me. There's not any winning with stuff like that. Unless we all could go back in time and remove our digital footprint, there's probably something out there people could find if they look hard enough. And this is a thing now, even in undergrad admissions in many places.
-
We'll see if its an interesting question for anyone on the faculty. My friend did not know how many applications they receive annually, and I didn't want to pry or put them in an awkward spot asking too much about the process.
-
My interest is in understanding the homily as a liturgical event (part of why i applied to Garrett). besides seminary greek and hebrew, i took the masters german reading course at ND a few summers ago. so that's all i listed on the app. my latin is very out of practice though i would jump at the opportunity for a refresher. I talked to a friend in the program a few weeks ago who mentioned a few different people i could work with depending on how my question were to take shape--but that's fantastically hypothetical at this point (and I can't say I have a good feeling about the process at this point).
-
the key is getting in somewhere. you can't do the work till you're in a program.
-
Garret-Evangelical Theological Seminary. One of my recommenders recommended that i look into that program after writing a letter to ND.
-
Turns out I still have an account. Found this when I'm supposed to be prepping for tomorrow morning. I have applications in for 2 liturgy programs (ND and GETS). Haven't heard anything yet from ND, and GETS' deadline is Monday so i don't expect to have any communication for a bit.

There are still people on the waitlist waiting for a final decision.

This is gonna be a long weekend.

Any tips for extracting reference letters out of slow writers?

Here's what I sent to one of my reccomenders (with edits to protect the innocent) "Hi, I haven't heard from you in a while and I hope you're doing well. I am hoping to to have all the elements of my application submitted in October. I am aiming for the Nov 1 application deadline. I hope you will be able to submit the reccomendation letter prior to All Saint's Day. If you have any questions or issues, or just want to say hi, please drop me a line. I look forward to hearing from you and I hope your keeping well." btw I sent this out about 6 weeks before the deadline so it doesn't hurt to harass you reccomenders a little. -
I think the next round of MDiv results will be out on the 22nd or 25th based on my last email with DDS.
-
belichick, That was kind of my thinking. I already had an extra rec on the initial application which is more than enough for now. I think inundating them with extra stuff now could be percieved as a little to desperate. My extra rec was someone I owed it to to let them write for me.

Thanks for the input regarding the waitlist. I emailed Rev Shea and asked about timeline for waitlist decisions. He said that the goal is for folks in my situation to know around the time the next batch of results are sent out, but that's not a guaruntee of a decision. I didn't ask about submitting additional materials, but there's not much that I could do to change my application.
-
I emailed them to find out what my status was (I'm out of town for a while so checking my snail mail was out of the question). I have no idea what kind of movement there is from the wait list to admitted status (if any at all) on average at DDS. If anyone out there has any insight it would be appreciated. For now I'm focusing on the facts that I wasn't flatly rejected and that not everyone admitted will attend.

It turns out the lack of communication was due to being placed on the waitlist. Whats a little extra waiting in Advent anyways?
