  1. Inspired by asleepawake's awesomeness (also nervous energy), I put together a notification calendar for us rhetoric & composition folks. I don't know how to create wikis, so this is a public google doc with two sheets (one list, one graphic). Please feel free to add to it or correct any errors!

  7. I'm sure if you conjugated your verbs correctly in the rest of your statement, they'll realize it's a typo and I don't think they'll think much of it. There are hundreds of posts about typos in both successful and unsuccessful SOPs, so I think you're fine.
  8. Generally speaking, schools have pretty relaxed deadlines in regard to LORs, but this is definitely not always the case. The best thing to do would be to contact the department(s) to which you're applying and make sure. Hope this helps!
  9. Hey ktwho, There are bunches of schools with late December and January deadlines. Go for it!

  11. I suppose it's that your questions--and some comments--imply that femininity is bad, that it should be muted, or that we should work harder to be masculine... or genderless?. I'm just not sure what's wrong with being obviously female or arguing like a woman... Especially in an environment like this where the conventional, negative sterotypes about women are clearly not being realized.
  12. ...and I'm pretty sure we're not embarrassed of them. I really like mine, anyway.
  13. I used all of my upvotes today on you, but . This made me lol like never before.
  14. oh, then we're in absolute agreement
  15. I disagree. I think it's a very good idea to check with departments to make sure your application is complete if you don't get a confirmation; I've done it for each school to which I applied. In some cases, my transcripts weren't matched up, etc. and in calling/emailing/logging in, I saved myself from wasting some application fees at the very least.
  16. I think most of the people posting here are very concerned about the culture of violence and our high rate of mental illness in the U.S., but guns are part of the issue too and regulating guns is one of the best ways to make these problems less of an immediate threat to others. In China and Japan there are mass stabbings where very few (often no) people die; obviously in the U.S. this is not the case. Guns don't kill people, but they sure make it a hell of a lot easier.
  17. You should definitely submit. It can't hurt and it can only help you. The diversity statements I was asked to write certainly applied to minority groups, but they also applied if your work might benefit resource poor communities, minority groups, women, etc. You may also choose to discuss something that's unique to you. Review the prompt carefully and make sure there's no way it applies to you before passing it over.
  18. Exactly. Generally speaking, the people who commit these mass murders of late aren't the kind of "criminals" with access to those who sell illegal or unregistered guns. The assertion that criminals will get guns no matter what doesn't really have relevance here.
  19. Me too, Rems.... and it's December. I got an email from one department I applied to this afternoon and started freaking. Of course, it was just a (probably form-) email from the DGS thanking me for applying and offering to answer questions about the program. I wish I could sleep until Feb.
  20. bfat, your situation really sucks. You definitely get to mourn this application. Still, you've worked hard and have applied to a bunch of great programs. I bet you get some great offers come Feb. and March.
  21. That's heartbreaking and totally unfair. It couldn't hurt to call and ask if your letter writer can send her/his letter via email, though. :/

  23. @asleep awake: I'm out of upvotes for today, but thanks. That makes total sense! @pinkrobot: Thanks! I am seriously not unlike a deranged raccoon when I'm not prepared, so I do now feel a little less freakishly stressed about this future and possibly nonexistent problem.
  24. That's awesome advice. Thanks so much!
