I'll be applying to school psych PhD programs for Fall 2017, but I wanted to ask this thread a question since you are seasoned experts by this point. :)

This might be a silly question, but how do you know whether or not to contact potential POIs at a school before applying? It seems like a given for most clinical PhD programs, but the small number of school psych programs I've asked so far have said specifically *not* to contact faculty in advance of applying.

Did you all contact POIs before applying? How did you know whether to get in touch or not?

Thanks and congrats to everyone who got an acceptance this year!

I disagree with the other poster, and think that you should do it. They will also give you insider info (are they moving? retiring? not taking students? taking students to only study x and you study z?) and you can potentially save an otherwise wasted application fee. Plus, never dismiss the power of name recognition!

eta: don't do this until the end of September!

  2. The PRAXIS is a joke, at least to those in my program (not sure if this is because the effectiveness of my program, but I kinda doubt it). I probably studied 15 hours total, and it was too much. I recommend going through the practice test online ($20 you get to take it 10 times) and seeing what your areas of weakness are and study them. Make sure you know important people and court cases and you'll be fine!

Thank you! I hope I do! I just feel like there are so many things that go into picking a program but I also don't want to overthink it. ?

It's tough! And things happen... just do your best. Figure out what is most important to you, and if all else fails go with your gut!

I've officially heard back from all of the schools I applied to. This application process is finally over. Now I have to decide where I will be in the Fall. I'm happy that the hardest part is over and that I actually got into a couple places.

    Congrats! Choose wisely! ;)

I'm officially reviving this thread right now! ;)

I saw someone posted in the results area that they got accepted into the School Psych PhD program at the University of Florida on Feb 25th via email. If you're following this post would you mind sharing which professor it was (you can PM me instead if you'd like)? I interviewed for the Ed.S program but, I still haven't heard anything back yet. <_<

In the meantime, I'll be over in the "WHINE, WAIT, and WINE" thread. Wallowing in my anxiety.

If it helps, where I go to school we send out PhD acceptances a whole 4-6 weeks before EdS. So don't sweat it too much!

I can't find the email address of one of the professors that interviewed me. She's a post-doc and new to the program so she's not on the faculty list yet. She was such an awesome person and helped me shake off the nerves on the interview. I thought about emailing someone so I can get her email address but I don't want to seem like a crazy person.

    What should I do?

Do you have the email address of any current students? If someone emailed me saying, "this person was nice to me and I wanted to say thanks, but didn't have her email" I would totally understand.

  7. I hope this is a troll. No, you can not wear jeans and a t-shirt to an interview and expect good results. Please wear a nice suit or skirt + top. In order to prepare look up sample interview questions and be prepared to discuss why you want to enter your field, attend that program specifically, and what your research interests/goals are.

  8. At the EdS level you can work in public or private schools, or at therapy centers (often that send you into schools).

The problem with working in a hospital is internship. They tell us in our program that hospital is a problem because of the breakdown of hours (so fewer therapy/contact hours) that you will have to supplement, plus these internships are VERY competitive, because they generally go to clinical and other kinds of students, and are rarely given to school psych students. To answer your question, yes, this is for doctoral level students. I think it would be almost impossible to do this with an EdS because you need the right level of experience to even land the job (or internship). An EdS with a clinical doctorate (or even Master's) might be a better route for you.

  9. You can ask, but you want to make sure they don't get the impression you're using their funds to see another program, which they might if you extend. I wouldn't tell them about your relatives either (you don't want them to think you're using them). Instead I would ask if you can depart the next day because you "want to get a feel for the town/city". Make sure to tell them you will cover your own lodging.

  10. This happened to me, and the prof was out of the country, unreachable by email! It was really scary.

What (usually) happens is the letters have to be in by the time the committee meets. So generally that gives you a little leeway between the deadline and the committee meeting. I would be very surprised if committees met before the winter break! Most likely they will email you in early Jan if they still haven't gotten the LOR.

Since it is a busy time of year (end of the semester) for profs, I would suggest waiting to ask this professor until you get an email from an adcom asking where the letter is, or 10-14 days have passed. Then a "I know you're busy but I just want to remind you these were due Dec 1" in a nice way should (hopefully) be all you need. I would definitely wait to send that until at least Monday unless a school is really on your case.

You can mention poster presentations if you are already using a sentence to talk about other presentations or outcomes. For example, if you are writing about the outcomes of a project and you say something like "I gave an oral presentation about this work at Student Meeting X", you can then append something like "and a poster presentation at Regional Conference Y". Or if you are using some space to discuss presentation experience, you can just mention that you have presented posters. But you can also not include this information and just leave it in the CV.

Yes, sorry, I agree with this, but as for explicit mentions just for the sake of them... skip that and put it in your CV instead.
