  1. With respect to SSHRC, it is never too early to start thinking about your application. This of course varies from school to school, but from past experience, applications become due in late September/early October for next year's awards. But, with a whole new university comes a whole new set of deadlines. Ok, here is my experience with the UBC housing waitlist. I received an offer for a housing option where I held a waitlist spot in the mid 100's. I had my preferred move-in date listed as June 1. I'm not sure, but I believe that this date had a substantial influence on the offer I received. I received the offer on a Friday morning and had until the end of the day on Monday to make a decision. If the date that you listed as your earliest move-in date is later in the summer, I wouldn't think that an offer would be just around the corner. I won't repeat details I provided in earlier posts but I felt that I could do better in the off-campus market. yumitsjudy - I have spent some time looking for off-campus options, while living some distance from BC. www.amsrentsline.com has been very useful in finding housing geared to students looking to live close to campus. I put a posting on craigslist in the "housing needed" section, just to look for someone who was also searching for housing. As it turns out, I had a landlord contact me, and it looks as if I will take her up on her offer. There are landlords/roommates out there who are looking for graduate students, so put yourself out there and see what you get! Let me know if you need any more details.
  2. I was in the same position, with housing numbers in the low 100's. Unfortunately, I received a housing offer. It is unfortunate because it was for my third choice of housing options. I let the offer expire, and now my entire housing application is inaccessible. This decision may come back to bite me, but I just didn't feel like climbing a ladder to get into bed at this point in my life! I am now furiously searching for off-campus options - I hope you have better luck with the on-campus options, but I would make some off-campus housing contacts should you be offered a less-than-favourable housing situation.
  3. Hi, I am in touch with my soon-to-be supervisor about two or three times a week, but in terms of the actual administrative staff of the department - I haven't had much of a need to contact them (outside of sending my acceptance and funding inquiries). I suppose it would depend on the department, and what they need from you.
  4. Well, it's been a month. Guess I'll have to wait until I get there.
  5. Here is a page that I came across regarding waitlist positions. This list may be helpful, but totally dependent on what you apply for. I thought I was doing great when I applied for the Thunderbird two-bedroom and was 65 or so on the waitlist. Turns out there are only 8 two-bedroom spaces available. So check it out, but take it with a grain of salt - it may refer to the undergrad housing situation. Like you jthh, I made some serious gains in the waitlists this past week - I hope it keeps up! http://www.housing.ubc.ca/application/waitlist.htm
  6. Hi! No, I have not been successful on the waitlist at all, and I applied in early March. I emailed the housing office and they advised me to look for off-campus options - not willing to comment on my waitlist status. However, I am applying for year-round housing, so your situation may be different if you are pusuing another option. They advised me to contact them a month in advance of my expected arrival date to get a more concrete idea of my status for housing. Needless to say, I have been on CL looking around for off-campus rooms.
  7. I agree whole-heartedly. I have been a career U of T student thus far and I know I will miss the city and the university in the years of study ahead. Those are good neighbourhoods to browse, although I have friends who love Bloor West Village. Also, avoid living outside of Toronto. I have been a commuter for about two years now, and while I save money on rent - the transport time and the general disconnect from university life make living outside of that 30-45 minute TTC radius diffcult.
  8. Hi! I realize this is a long shot - but is anyone doing graduate work at the Faculty of Education of the University of British Columbia? What department/program?
  9. Hi all, I hate to sound so needy here - but does anyone have any experience with living on-campus at UBC in graduate housing? Specifically, when do housing offers go out? At what position on the waitlist should one give up hope? Thanks!
  10. Hi all, Has anyone heard anything from a Columbia Ed.D program? I received an email about a month ago telling me that they were taking additional time to consider applicants - just wondering if anyone finds themself in a similar situation?
  11. Hi again everyone, This may seem like something of a random question - but does anyone know of an association offering courses in American Sign Language in the Vancouver area? I can't find a great deal of info online and it is something I would like to keep up when I move to the city. Thanks!
  12. Hi jthh, Sounds like we are in the same boat. I'll keep you posted if I come across anything of value! I'm in Educational and Couselling Psychology, Special Education (EPSE), starting this fall.
  13. Thanks for the info. I had no idea about all the labour uncertainty - I'm there mostly for the mountains! (lifetime east-coaster)
  14. Anyone heading to UBC from another Canadian university?
  15. Hi Everyone, I'm just wondering if anyone reading this is starting or is currently enrolled in a program in the Faculty of Education at UBC. I start there in the Fall and know only about as much as I can gather from online sources. It would be great to run some questions by a real person for once! Anyhow, hit me back if you care to share any insights. Thanks!
