  1. I guess it's time for me to weigh in seeing how it is getting closer and closer to the time where we all will be making these decisions and I Seem to have found myself in a very similar place as the original poster...being that I have interviews and both cranbrook and yale while I'm still waiting notification from my third school, mica. I applied to these school for in large part the same reason, an experimental, critical, and theoritical approach to the way design functions both as an industry and practice, meaning I didn't want to go to school to learn how to design a for sake of example a stop sign, rather Im interested in how the sign functions out in the wild, how can it be pushed past its present understanding in order to better serve its purpose in the cultural that its functioning in now rather than the one it is designed in. This question can then be used to also question the formal aspects of the object(which undoubtedly effects the function). I wasnt really able to find this sort of questioning and skeptiscm in anyother graduate programs Now I am interviewing at cranbrook this Friday and I really, though I have done as much research as time allowed, have no idea exactly how the school functions and this sort of thing that entices me, but also sort of pushes yale ahead, and this may change after my visit tomorrow, who knows, but both programs from the outside seem very intelligent and offer what ever they can to push there student and the field alike. (Tearing done my bfa show right now more in a bit...)
  2. Just got an email from MICA saying that they are about to conduct their final decisions and will notify everyone by March 15th. Other than this I have had no contact. I wasnt requested for interview or rejected...Has anyone been rejected from MICA for graphic design? Is this email a small indicator, that I have a chance of being admitted? Or is the word final just there next to decision arbitrarily?
  3. I agree. I was in a similar situation last year where I applied to mica and was rejected from the grad program but offered a scholarship to attend the post-bacc there for graphic design. After much deliberation I opted to not do it and rather take 11 more credit hours at my undergrad university(where I'm about to graduate from) and get a BFA. This year has allowed me a studio space where I essentially "attended classes" and developed my work both painting and collage as well as graphic design work on my own uninterrupted besides the criticism of my overseeing faculty. This option was cheaper and more rewarding than uprooting my whole situation for a post bacc and no guarentee admittance to a grad program...ultimately the choice is yours and if your still in school talk with your professors they often time have sage advice on these situations.
  4. Any news about design yet at MICA? I have Interviews scheduled for both yale and cranbrook and Im anxious to get the news so a can plan it all. My march is already looking hectic with final solo shows for graduation and the two interviews all only 2.5 weeks apart...
  5. What are you to interviewing for? It wouldn't happen to be design would it?
  6. Yeah I was invited for an interview at their studio. I was told to bring a "portfolio". Do they want to see the work a sent in with my app in person or a mix of new and that or only new. I'm really excited...I have the cranbrook interview my solo exhibition of my bfa and then yale all in three weeks!!! So much to do.
  7. Cranbrook interview!!! Can't wait to meet Elliot. He seems really passionate about what he is doing and where the program is headed.
  8. I regret not applying to risd in retrospect...
  9. Same!!! Are you 2d design???
  10. Yeah. I'm currently working on a couple editorial/ self-initiated book designs and some process poster and final designs. I'm also trying to get together an archival project that involves the university's press and the rare typefaces it holds. Well see what happens.
  11. Sort of wish all schools were as speedy as yale...I guess I'll just have to wait a bit longer for cranbrook and mica...
  12. Anyone hear from MICA graphic design?
  13. I have an interview scheduled for April 1st with Yale for their three year graphic design program and I'm a bit nervous and confused on what to expects. They ask to see in person(no digital) ten additional pieces. I'm assuming they want to see posters, magazine, book designs, and more. Now, do they want to see completely different materials or do you think different works from the same sets sent in originally could also fly in addition too completely different works? Also has anyone had experience interviewing with yale in general? What kind if questions will be asked, how serious is the interview or is it pretty lax(this is yale after all)? Will I be completely drilled in my statement? And finally has anyone heard from MICA or Cranbrook yet?
  14. Yale interview granted last night...As you all could imagine I was pretty ecstatic. With this great news also came a near comatose brain where just the "smallest" task of selecting my interview slot is, well, simply put overwhelming. If anyone has any advice on the logic they used to derive their past decisions and any additional information on the typical Yale Graphic design procedure that would be great. The forums are loaded with plenty of information, but all of this is generally directed toward the painting/printmaking program. good luck to everyone!
