UT Austin, Columbia, and UI-UC now! Ah!

"informal" phone interview though...I wonder what that really means. I had a phone "meeting" with a POI from UConn where we talked for an hour or so, but I wouldn't consider it an interview I want to know about interview weekends! it does seem like the UC schools are moving quickly though, with Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Riverside, now Davis, and (apparently) Berkeley next week all getting in touch with applicants. Really hope UCSD is next!!

Yeah, it's definitely helpful. It obviously differs by school though. Only 2 of my 9 programs indicated whether faculty were accepting students.

There's a difference between being curt and not responding. One professor was curt but I know that is her way of communicating through information from some of my contacts--she's just very busy and efficient, but she did indicate that she would be willing to take students. However, I decided not to apply to two programs after not hearing back at all. I sent out a brief email basically asking whether they were accepting students, a line about my recent work, and letting them know they can contact me for any other info (CV, transcript, poster reprints). I mean, why would I apply if I don't know if they're accepting students? or if they can't bother to let me know that they are/aren't? With application fees as high as $110, I'm not committing that kind of money to a program when I don't know that I'll even be considered.

Rejected for no good reason- how to appeal?
Tolman's Rat replied to Rose93's topic in Decisions, Decisions
or they had better recommendations...or a more directed and relevant statement...information that a grad admissions officer is very unlikely to divulge. sorry that you didn't get in, but this post is quite accurate. There is so much that goes into a doctoral application, and it's often so competitive that many well-qualified applicants do not get in. Probably even people who are more qualified than you are. -
Add Yale to the list of schools sending out interview invites already (another Dec 1 deadline)

Waiting Game--how do you deal with the waiting anxiety?
Tolman's Rat replied to procedural memory's topic in Waiting it Out
I went to Cuba for a week. It was great. Now just back to work, but my job is not exactly an anxiety reducer. I edit manuscripts for a living, so I'm by my computer nearly 24/7...and consequently, I'm on here too much and always tuned into my email. -
How many schools are you applying to this year?
Tolman's Rat replied to kaswing's topic in Psychology Forum
I applied to 9 and used Evernote to keep everything organized. I just created one big note with a standardized format for each school. It's been nice because I can access it across all platforms, so I can always be thinking about grad school -
I looked into it a bit further, and UC Riverside and UCLA, which seem to be the most active so far, didn't send out acceptances or interview invites until mid-January the last two years, so it doesn't seem to be a yearly school-specific trend. We'll see what happens, but it's making me more anxious than I expected at this point! I didn't apply to either, but did apply to UCSD. Hoping it's a UC thing!

Well, my compulsive checking paid off...no response from UConn, but my application was marked as complete as of 12:20 PM EST
-
Ah I hope she does!! I'm really stumped on why it's saying incomplete.
-
If this thread is any evidence (along with the results search), some people will know sooner rather than later! That said, I still find the time to work my 40+ hours a week, just got back from a week in Cuba with my significant other after completing the majority of my applications, and manage to get to the gym nearly every day. It would kill me to just sit by my computer non-stop, but nevertheless, the push notifications on my phone have a calming effect
-
Anyone else apply to UConn and still getting an incomplete application notice? All of my supporting documents have been received (including official transcripts), and it doesn't appear based on the materials checklist that the application is incomplete. I sent an email to the psych grad admissions coordinator, but being the neurotic ball of anxiety that I am, I had to come on here and ask if anyone is having the same issue.
-
How...how do you live without push notification email? Outlook and the Android mail app are my best friends. Seriously.
-
I'm amazed to see such early notices from UC-Riverside. High-end school with a Dec 1 deadline, and they're accepting students a week and a half later? Crazy. Based on last year's results, I can't expect to hear much of anything until mid-January.

It's extremely time consuming, but I view it as essential. In fact, I didn't even consider the possibility of being admitted without demonstrating at least some familiarity with POIs' research.

I only have a scholarship application to do today! That said, I just started my research proposal last night Should be interesting. Finished all my program applications that are due today late last week, thankfully. So you have letters due today that haven't been submitted yet? My last reccommender submitted mine yesterday and I was losing my mind. Can't imagine what you're feeling. Tell us! Tell us!
-
Hey. I also made a silly mistake, messing up a verb conjugation in one letter. I wrote "I believe this level of familiarity with X, Y, and Z are uncommon for incoming graduate students..." I think it's unreasonable to expect an application to be completely free of errors, and I doubt there are many that are. Don't sweat it, and if your program doesn't accept you because of it, you probably didn't want to go to a school that's so petty, anyway

Recommender not sending in recommendation!
Tolman's Rat replied to feefeefee's topic in Psychology Forum
In the same boat right now and it's extremely stressful. He told me that he would do them on Thursday as he has visitors all weekend (my first apps are due Monday), but he didn't do them. I sent a reminder yesterday and he said that he got it, so I'm hoping they just come in last minute. I also asked him initially months ago (back in June, actually, and then sent out prompts for the first time in early October). I'd like to ask someone else, but this individual is incredibly influential in my field and his recommendation will go a long way. Each school is different with regard to whether recommenders can submit late so you will want to check specific guidelines. Hope it all works out for you. You're not alone!!! -
Assuming you're applying to work with Liina Pylkkanen and/or David Poeppel at NYU? Just submitted my application two nights ago! Done 4 with 5 left to go.

Yeah the program is top-notch, which made the great visit that much sweeter. I think I'll be receiving an offer (was told "we'll almost certainly be able to make you an offer as long as your references pan out" -- and I was assured by my recommenders that I have nothing to worry about there). Sort of an interesting chain of events. I was at a conference last month, and the co-authors on a manuscript that I'm first author on are big in the field, one being the organizer of the conference. The other introduced me to a colleague (who is my POI for the program I'm visiting this week), who mentioned that he is beginning collaborations with the POI from the program I visited last week (UWO). When I sent out my "feeler" e-mail back in October to my UWO POI, I was sure to mention this conversation, the work I've done, etc. He asked for a CV and transcript, and then asked me if I'd like to come for a visit, lunch, etc. Basically, when you know/work with the right people, and have already been conducting research directly relevant to your grad interests, the process gets much easier :-)

UConn in Storrs?
