  1. Hi, I didn't post on the board, but received the same email from Yale to set up interviews. It's specifically from the sociocultural/medical faculty.
  2. Realised the question wasn't clear - I meant, what does being recruited entail when it's pre-acceptance?
  3. I am sure they do! I mean, you even said it on many of the applications, I imagine. Once you have your official acceptance, you can send a polite email and all will be well. They send out enough of them for you to not feel guilty, I would say! Can I ask, what does being "recruited" entail? Is it pre-acceptance?
  4. I would have thought it's pretty late at this point, and that the effort that's gone into the application would say that for us. Unless there's something significant to update them about, that might impact the decision in some way.
  5. I think guardedly optimistic is ideal in this case
  6. A bit late, but sorry to hear this PhDreams! Hopefully the next week will bring more positive news.
  7. Unlucky Lexicon, I hope that you get off it! I am bracing myself for the Duke rejection e-mail...from looking at previous years they seem to come in waves. Fun times.
  8. Hehe, it's pretty miserable huh? Not linguistic, but it's a comfort to know others feel the pain too. Argh!
  9. The moment when you wake up to an e-mail from your POI... ...and see it's from a listserve.
  10. Thanks HeadCold for such a detailed account - sounds like quite an intense weekend! 8 interviews in a day...oof.
  11. Hi HeadCold, I'm certainly interested! Not sure whether all interview requests have gone out for Emory yet (one's listed from over a week ago now), but I have my fingers crossed that they haven't. Any insight you had would be great to hear (either here or by PM ). Thanks!
  12. Congratulations Radiomars! Not a bad start at all
  13. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and your tips - it is really useful. Regarding Yale, I seem to remember reading in their paper that they're no longer allowed to accept doctoral students without having talked to them first, so as you say there is definitely some form of interview. From last year, it seems to be a very different experience depending on your POI.
  14. Just started a new thread on interviews! Might be useful for future applicants as well to have the information on hand.
  15. This has just come up in the "waiting game" thread - thought it might be useful to have a thread specifically about it. It would be great to hear from people who have had them in previous years, so we can get some idea of what they'll entail, and also from people in the application process at the moment in relation to what preparation you're doing for it! The other question that came up are which schools interview and which don't, if anyone can speak to that.
  16. I'm in the same position. No news from Duke, and statement doesn't make me cringe so much as just shake my head and wish I'd worked it all out earlier. The order of everything really doesn't make much sense. I hope you (and I!) hear from other schools for interviews in time!
  17. Thanks for the information. Best of luck with your interview. I'm trying my best to stay on an even keel at the moment, with interviews having been posted for both Emory and Duke. They were my first two applications, and I was still perfecting my statement at the time, so certainly did not hand in my best work. I was fully not expecting to get an interview, so trying to stave off the anxiety about not getting one. Which seems very silly. I hate waiting.
  18. That's an interesting question... I have no idea of course . I feel that I've done the best I can and if this doesn't work out then I'll have to look at other options. (This is partly due to visa issues - my partner can't sponsor me to immigrate into the U.S. and so if grad school falls through she'll be looking to move to Europe, and I'll have to sponsor her. I need a relatively well-paying job to be able to do that.) I could certainly foresee, though, trying various things and then finding I just come back to academics all the time. If that happens, and I know that I've given other things a good go, I imagine I'd keep at it and not walk away. Typing all this just makes me so hope that it happens this time round. Good luck to you, hope it works out.
  19. Second time here, after a somewhat rushed application last year. I decided during undergrad that I wanted to do a phd, but then for various reasons had to put it on the back burner. I decided around mid to late October last year to apply, and rushed up a project and wasn't able to do much reading for it, so couldn't really place it in the field which I'm hoping was the problem. The other problem was that I applied to three top tier, ridiculously competitive programs, but that's another story. This time, I stopped working in September/October so that I could concentrate on my applications, and really threw myself into it. The result is a statement that I'm happy with, and from the little feedback that I did get last year the rest of my materials are all strong, so fingers crossed! Having put so much work into it this time round, if I don't get in I'll know that I've done the best that I possibly could. I've decided that at that point I will just have to walk away and find another path, as I'm about to begin the push towards 30. Here's hoping it doesn't happen.
  20. Oh my goodness I can't wait until I am back in the US and my Netflix account. This sounds too good.
  21. Oh I see! I was hoping you had some insider info! Will go back to trying not to think about it. (As you see from my being on here, it's not really working). Good luck for two weeks' time!
  22. Also, while on the topic - anyone have any application figures for Irvine? It seems strange to me that there are relatively few listings for it in the results page when the department's so central in the discipline at the moment.
  23. Going by the results search on here, Irvine's mid-February - where do you get two weeks from?
