  1. In case anyone wasn't aware, Robin Walker, director of the GRFP program, posted on the NSF GRFP LinkedIn profile 5 days ago:

"Notification of awards/honorable mentions is just around the corner. Good luck GRFP applicants!"

That was on....Wednesday of last week. So yeah :D

How do you know that she is the director of the GRFP program?

  2. They might just be waiting until their offices close [to post the maintenance message] so they don't have to deal with infinity questions, e.g, "Will I still be notified if awards are posted tonight!?" and such... I just reeealy want this to be over!

But why did the 2013 results reappear? Was that significant?

  3. This is a pretty ridiculous question, but what part of the screen does the message show up on? I keep refreshing and having a moment of panic because I don't know which part I'm expecting to change. (I assume that this level of crazy is welcomed and accepted in this thread...)

I think it was below the banner that says "Honorary Awards | Graduate..."

  4. Definitely talk to your lab head (granted you trust his/her opinion). Also, graduate students and postdocs in your lab can be very helpful since they probably went through it recently. For my application essays (which some schools do actually consider an important component of the application), I had a lot of help from people from a college writing center, which actually helped immensely.

  5. I spoke with my mentors and advisors today and yesterday, and I am about 90% confident about one program, but I will post my final decision (along with my top three choices) in a couple of days (I want to be 100% sure that I am making the right choice for me).

Congrats to everyone who already committed! It sounds like you all are going to have a great time in grad school! :)

  6. Woohoo, just received unofficial acceptance from University of Rochester IMV!!

One question: does an official acceptance usually come with additional information about stipend and courses and so on??

Congratulations! Official acceptances typically give you more information about their offer to you, including stipend, but usually not a lot of detail as far as courses or similar aspects of the program (details that are usually provided during interview weekends or on the program website).

  7. @ion_exhanger: Thanks! I feel really lucky to be in this situation. It will be a tough choice, but I think I have an idea of which school I'll pick :) Any idea where you're going to go? I've heard the NIH is a great place to work.

@livinlite: I haven't been to MIT yet, but I know someone who heard back from them around one week after their first weekend. I hope you hear something good soon!

@floridabio: Great, congrats! I hope my advice was helpful!

  8. @diamedic17: Yes, on Long Island is the correct phrasing lol. Not really sure about finding cheap housing. I know that a lot of people will rent a part of a house (i.e. a basement apartment) decently close to campus, which would probably be your best bet for being inexpensive and pet-friendly housing. Sorry, I'm not much help in this category.

  9. @floridabio: It seems like you prefer University of Georgia, which, from what you wrote, seems like the better choice. Things don't always work out as planned and professors can move to a new university, not have space, retire, etc., so you're really better off going somewhere that you could see yourself working in a bunch of different labs. I think choosing the correct graduate school is a very personal decision, so you should definitely go with your gut. Best of luck!

  10. Also rejected from UCSF. I don't really know why. Only reason I can think of is that I responded honestly about other schools I was applying to. Sad because I was seriously considering going to UCSF over the others.

They let us know by automated message to their application program.

In most cases, I don't think an honest discussion about the programs you applied to affects an institution's decision (unless you enthusiastically rave about one of the other programs you are considering). They are aware that you are applying to other good schools, but are still looking for people who would be happy to join their specific program. I think post-interview decisions really come down to whether or not the program is a good fit for you and how well your application fits who you are in reality.
