  1. Big congrats to everyone! Sure glad to be past April 15th. And see you in NY, wmb! Let me know how your housing situation will be working out down the line.
  2. Thanks, everyone! Best of luck with your decisions!
  3. Hi everyone, just wanted to let all of you know that I have accepted NYU's offer for the MA, and I'm really excited about it! There was a very slim chance of getting off the wait list at Minnesota, so I put an end to that. To be honest, this year in France has really confirmed my passion for education, as I've been working twice or three times the hours of a normal teaching assistant, and I wouldn't mind starting my career in high school after this degree. That will be another discussion, but for now, I will take a deep breath and celebrate. I hope those with decisions will be able to do the same very shortly!
  4. Congrats, Fransces! That's excellent news! Best of luck.
  5. wmb, That seems like a great position to be in! I really believe in the faculty and fit. I've also been researching job placement, opportunities abroad, as well as contacting students to see how active and supportive the department is. If you choose NYU, I will probably see you there.
  6. DGS at Penn State broke the rejection news to me by email. 6 down, 1 last PhD decision to go.
  7. Guess so, Verisa. I'm just ready for the last few decisions. Luckily, I'm escaping to Lisbon for the weekend, so I'll try to stay patient and enjoy my last month or so in Europe.
  8. Thanks for the info, Johann, and congrats to you, too! I took your advice and received a quick response informing me that I was not selected for the first round of admits, but I am under consideration for the 2nd round, if I want to be.
  9. Ah, obviously a different area compared to SoCal, but that should be a great experience! Regarding NYU, my offer is now comes with 75% off tuition, which is an increase from previous funding! I would definitely be working some part-time job to go along with this, but I'm very excited about the opportunity to take these classes at the IFS and spend a few months studying in Paris. Still, I'm waiting for PSU and Minnesota before taking it all into consideration.
  10. I agree with johann, have to go with faculty and fit. It's tempting to think about location, but you obviously applied to Duke for a reason and they accepted you! I very nearly applied there and would love to be in your place. I have family in that area of North Carolina, and I think it's a solid area. Definitely not my favorite in the world, but it's good. It took a while for my uncle (born and raised in Michigan, lived on the east coast) to get used to the life down there, but he likes it. I fully support going with the best fit at Duke! Very exciting!
  11. Congratulations, cicada! That is fantastic news! I also hate making decisions, and as I'm over here in France, too, I hear you about potential visits. I would at least talk or skype with more faculty and students, which you've probably already done in some extent? I've been doing a good deal of that over the past week and it has really helped to clarify things. At any rate, congrats again and it's a great decision to have to make!
  12. Yes, I'm talking to NYU today about funding, so that is good. I received the typical "Faculty Committee has issued a decision on your application" email, telling me to log on and check my status. I did not email Columbia.
  13. Good luck, Nicko! It's definitely good that you're under consideration! I just learned of my Columbia rejection from a status check email. Can't say that I'm too shocked about it, and now my decision is down to potential offers from PSU or Minnesota, or I'm packing my bags and going to NYU's MA. I will live with that.
  14. Good to know, thanks! I am very interested, just waiting for the rest of the news to come in.
  15. Thanks! It just feels good to have an offer at this point. There's a chance that I can get a good amount of it paid for, so we'll see how it all works out soon enough!
  16. Finally, some good news! I received a call yesterday and was accepted into the MA program at NYU's Institute of French Studies. The funding is being worked on, so I will wait for the other offers and consider my options when they come. It's just nice to have an acceptance!
  17. Thanks for the kind words, everyone. Hoping for good news in the coming weeks. Like many of you, I'm also waiting on Columbia. And thanks, cicada! I haven't started to apply for teaching jobs, but I will definitely explore that site, along with k12jobspot and others. I have a job at my local golf course in Michigan that I will come back to by early May. It's very close to my house, so I'll be able to stay at home for a few months and save money before going to NYC, Minn, PSU, or starting a teaching job.
  18. Trying to stay positive. I've secured employment until Sept/Oct, but I will not do this process again next year if it doesn't work out for me with the remaining programs. That being said, I'm talking with NYU about the M.A. at the end of this week, so we'll see how that turns out.
  19. The application for that program comes out in April and the majority of applicants get accepted. I feel good about that program, but I'm not 100% sure about applying. A more practical option for me would be to get a high school job in the US, if my PhD options don't come through.
  20. And allow me to follow that post up with a Northwestern rejection. At least the picture of what I'll be doing next year looks clearer with each decision that comes in.
  21. Greetings from Dublin, leg one of the vacances d'hiver, where I just received one of the Berkeley rejections you'll find on the results page. A definite buzzkill after seeing The Script open their arena tour at The O2. Hope you're all doing well.
  22. Sorry to hear about the UT rejections, guys. And thanks for the "ain't nobody got time fo dat" Wj2011, exactly what I needed to pick me up haha!
  23. I think it's not out of the ordinary. I haven't heard from Columbia either, along with 4 other programs that I applied to. It looks like you aren't alone with some of the other programs you listed. Personally, it's hard for me to tell if that's good or bad news, depends on any visits that could be happening or other factors. As Northwestern said in an email, you're under consideration until told otherwise. I'd go with that statement. I'm not in favor of emailing to ask for information. Not sure if it comes off as rude, but I feel like you'll be getting answers soon enough.
  24. Thanks, A nous deux. I'm technically not 100% accepted, I'd still have to be sent back to the admissions dept for review if I want to be considered for it. And I seriously understand your point, I really don't want to go into debt with all of this. I'm thinking about entering the high school job market if I don't get any good PhD offers this season, then look into future degrees down the line. Hello, Nicko! I'm sure your news will come soon enough. Activity seems to be picking up, so you should get answers soon enough. Best of luck
  25. Thanks for the positive thoughts, everyone. I'm definitely still processing the possibility of the MA at NYU, but it obviously becomes more of an option after I hear back from the rest of the PhD programs. And that's great, wmb! Though I didn't apply, the program is clearly great and I hadn't been on a campus like UCLA's before. To me, it felt like I was in a movie while walking around, no pun intended LA is also quite the experience, hope that goes well!
