  1. Is this a rhetorical criticism? If so, you should have a description of the artifact in the paper already. That should be enough for them to understand your analysis.
  2. Some of the programs I applied to seemed to imply that they do not want applicants contacting or visiting them.
  3. I am about to mail in my last application, which is for the University of Arkansas. They did not ask for a personal statement or statement of purpose, but would it be wise to include one anyway?
  4. I know mine will be read, but I'm applying to a Creative Writing MFA program.
  5. I had one that was late. A former professor of mine agreed to write the letter in August. He replied to my reminder about a month later, saying he would get right on it and thanks for reminding him. Then I didn't hear from him for awhile. He didn't respond to my emails and calls, so I finally looked him up on Facebook and found out that he had died two days after his last conversation with me. I felt so horrible for bugging him about my letter! My boss ended up writing me a great letter at the last minute.
  6. The generation that is freshman and sophomores in college now spent most of their school careers in full-on "no child left behind" mode. They weren't taught critical thinking. They were taught to memorize facts and pass tests. They were also taught that everyone gets a trophy and you should never say anything critical because that's bullying.
  7. The one I get most often is, "Why would you want another master's degree?" I already have an MA and I'm applying to MFA programs. No one seems to understand the difference.
  8. Find a school with daycare on campus, if at all possible. Usually these are staffed by students in childcare and child development programs, which greatly reduces the cost as compared to regular daycare. One of my good friends had a baby a couple of months ago during her second year of her PhD in Communication. She is making it very well, but her husband has a decent paying job with very regular hours. She also decided from the beginning not to breastfeed, which has made scheduling much, much easier, but she has taken a lot of flack over it. If your husband/parter is a student too, it's going to be really difficult, especially in the financial department.
  9. Fayetteville, AR. The Razorback Transit bus system goes all over town and it's 100% free. There is also Ozark Regional Transit which goes out to the other cities in the area. Plus there are lots of bike and walking trails combined with nice weather and low crime. Just don't rent housing from Lindsey Management.
