  1. Check out workflowy. I read about it on Slate and have been using it for about a week. I love it! I started a coursera class, to get back into academic mode, and it has been a godsend. I use it on my Galaxy Note 2 and my home computer and it syncs perfectly. Every brain-fart goes in and I can expand on it later. Edit: The last class I took was in 2001, so it has been awhile indeed.
  2. Adobe Acrobat professional can cut two page PDFs into one page each, orient them and even level them out. I did it once and was not too difficult. I have a borrowed copy of Acrobat, so don't know how much it costs. And there are some free solutions out there too.
  3. I am headed to Tulane for PhD in Anthropology.
  4. Miami is a great town. Sometime it can feel like living outside of the US. But, that's what I like about it. Coral Gables is great with lots of shops and restaurants. Some parts are very pricey, but if you look around you might be able to find a good deal. The University of Miami area may have more offerings for grad students and the school may even have online resources. Good luck!
  5. Congrats on your FIU acceptance! Can I ask from where are you coming? I can answer some questions, but living as a grad student is not my experience. People do it every year, but how, I struggle to imagine. Probably includes multiple roommates, frugal living, maybe even small student loans to make the ends meet. In terms of culture shock, well, that all depends on you and prior experiences. I love Miami and hate to be leaving, but my wife, on the other hand, probably won't even look in the rear-view mirror as we drive away.
  6. Sorry to hear this Tezcatlipoca. I hope you have some good options elsewhere.
  7. All my stress refreshing died away when I was mercifully given final word. Now, it's stress city researching, stress school planning (for the kids), stress moving, etc.
  8. Good luck for all the Archaeologist still waiting. Hope to see you all in New Orleans!!
  9. I was given a call by my POI that I was accepted. I inferred from our talk that everything is decided, but that it might be a few more days yet before official notifications are sent out. Good luck to those still waiting it out.
  10. ¿Cuándo, cuándo que será, cuándo por favor? http://youtu.be/lW61COptibI
  11. The Ad-com is meeting this week, but there will probably still be some horse-trading afterward. News should start trickling out sometime next week. I was told that they are taking about 6-8 students in this cohort, with a small waitlist. Good luck to everyone!
  12. I see there's Harvard waitlist posted - anyone want to claim that and let us know if you're archaeology, cultural, medical...?
  13. That was me. I am cultural. She says that they are meeting next Wed. My case is a bit unique, so I figure I have some 'splainin to do. I am somewhat surprised, but this brings Tulane back up to the fore. What will be, will be.
  14. This makes sense, giving a Feb 1 deadline. But, as much as I would love to live and study in NOLA, my mind is starting to crystallize around the acceptance that I already have. It's getting to the point that they would have to give a really great package to dislodge my other school from my mind (assuming I get in).
  15. Congrats! This is a very interesting topic. I hope to read some of your research in the coming years.
  16. Don't be so glum! I bet you have a shot at getting in. Be optimistic!
  17. That doesn't bode well for my application. Yet, congrats and good luck are wished on those making this next step.
  18. I use Regards as my goto ending. I don't use Best Regards because all of my regards are the best! I use Kind Regards if they have done me a solid and I use Warm Regards when we have a rapport of some professional familiarity.
  19. There are several professors on my list. My interests are African Diaspora culture and religion in Latin American and Caribbean countries, generally (Cuba and Haiti more specifically), and transplantation to the US. I'll PM you some specific names.
  20. I am in the same position with FIU as well, on the anthropology side. FIU is a fantastic fit for me as well. Good luck with your other applications. Perhaps we will see each other at FIU in the fall. I am glad that I will be going somewhere.
  21. This has been a very enlightening discussion. Thanks to all participants!
