-

truth be told i havent read the clash of civilizations fully i just got the idea from grad tutors and a couple of papers and a book called the meta-history of the clash of civilizations by adib-moghadam from SOAS. i agree with the common islamic link you mentioned but i think thats all there is to it, if you follow the trend you hear many things on islamic brothership (didnt put hood to not mix it up with the group) and unity amongst muslims but thats all there is to it, and exposions in iraq and pakistan and else where are widening the islamic gap so if i understood sam correctly, the name if islam is their only point of similarity. anyways, i certainly respect him as an academia, and quite like his student, farid on cnn, great guy:D

im re-reading the best book i ever read, the count of mount cristo!the best moments of my life passed when i was reading this, recommend it to anyone who has a lot of free time, 3 big chunky volumes for me! also, while waitin for the 2nd film to come, The Hobbit is around the house bieng paged to refresh the mind and praise the one and only Tolkien. and scholerly, if intrested in ME politics and history, i'm reading a few of Anoushirvan Ehteshami's books on iran, and also a book by christopher jafferlot on India, never looked to see what the actual name is, but its about radical hinduism.

well if some one knows the islamic world even at its surface, they would never generalize it as one big whole. its actually composed of fragments, some big and others smaller., shiites, sunnis, salafis, esmailis they would never come under one umbrella because of the power diffrentials in the region e.g. KSA Iran rivalry and their proxies. now why would some one consider this puzzle as a whole and put it against the west? such thing is with bernard lewis, the man who started the two wars and hasnt been in the ME for the past 30 years! anyways, if one wants to know islam from a more unbiased view, he should look in john esposito i think. btw, sorry all for the off-topic, just wanted to answer the question.

mine is from the region i come from, Iran. 1.khayyam, his poems are fantastic, you just love the carpe diem message in them 2. edward said, the first book i read and liked when i entered undergrad 3. sam huntington: i like him because i hate him, such a naive guy1 4.Thomas Kuhn: i will always be fascinated by his paradigms! 5.Joschka" Fischer! dont know, just like him not much middle eastern after all!

-
Hi, im intrested in applying for a PhD Iranian Studies in the following years, does anyone know any good programs in the U,S, apart from Columbia and UCLA? any news on programs in Germany? Btw, my M.A is Indology, could that be a problem when i apply?
-
Thanks for your detailed response, I like to work with milani and i'll search for where i can apply to him and i just like Walt because of his blog at FP:D anyways, since your a faculty member, how do you think an applicant like me could cover up a weak and unrelated undergrad when applying to U.S. schools?
-
how strong are profs at these places?i mean how effective is their decision in the application process? can they get you a funding if you lack in GRE's or GPA just because they like your proposal? for e.g Abass Milani at stanford or stephen walt at harvard, can they get me an acception if they likes my work and proposal, but my undergrad is weak or unrelated or bad GRE? thanks in advance btw

Looks like we are interested in the same stuff. i looked at the U.K. this years and found some South Asian programs, the Joint Phd of KCL and National University of Singapore looks to be great, also KCL has arranged for a 1 year visit to JNU in India for those students interested. also, University of Edinburgh has India research PhD. but what has to be pointed out about U.K doctorates is that they are expensive for non EU/UK students are funding's are very very limited!
-
thanks for the explanations, in the indivual mode, do the students get any T.A.ships at the university?from what you says they seem to give it,right? btw what would the Title of the PhD be in organized programms?for e.g would they give you a PhD Pol.sci from BTS or what? And something to German Universities, for god sake if you wanna get international students you should become more English-friendly. i've been going through places like, HU Berlin, Marburg, LMU and other places and in lot of pages you reach an English-DEadend and suddenly everything becomes german, now if your looking for professors for indiviual work, thats become hard to find the right guy
-
hi Guys i am considering moving to Germany for PhD, UK is to expensive and the U.S needs the GRE. any thoughts on Germany? ans also, i am selecting between Heildelberg and Freie Berlin, which one do you think is best in international perstige i mean?cause i am planning to do a top Post-Doc after the doctorate?

difficulties for U.S citizens is a myth, specially for some one who has spent 4 years studying Persian, the Program is in Persian and all the students spend 6 months at dehkhoda then their programs start and they are accommodated at University of Tehran's Special International Dorms . the course uses prominent professors from across the universities in Tehran. anyways if you have any special inquiries i can ask them for you, the program co-ordinator is my supervisor. anyways the M.A is Held at Faculty of World Studies which is trying to become a prominent centre in Iran and the ME, so they exchange programs with NUS Singapore and german Universities, also since the faculty is interdisciplinary there are a wide range of supervisors with different research interests available

hi guys, im starting to do so some pre-eliminary research for my M.A thesis, i am interested and would like to work on Nuclear Deterrance and Arms Proliferation, but of the Profs. in my faculty no one has worked on this before other then reading about it in some IR books, do you think i should go ahead and work on deterrance with a professor who hasnt worked on it before, or do my thesis inline with the available supervision? it would be a big help if you tell me what you think

hi guys, im currently doing an M.A in Indian Studies at the University of Tehran,I'm working on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Deterrence and wanted to apply for a PhD in Security Studies or IR. after some research i found security study study programs to be very few, should i just go for IR and work on deterrence? and do you know any good profs at decent IR schools working on NPT and stuff?
