  1. Does anyone know of any god essays on or authors that have written about "the displacement" of the high/low (popular) distinctions of modernism? Thank you!
  2. Most schools offer a more detailed list of what they required in their application (LoRs, SoPs, GREs, Resumes, # writing samples with size, etc). Williams College, however, is not listing, at this point, what their requirements will be (other than the GRE, and maybe TOEFL). Though I know that they may change a few of the requirements for the upcoming application cycle, I would still like to find out what have been their requested items in the past. Do you know by any chance? I am particularly interested in finding out about the max length allowed for the SoP, how many and length of the writing sample(s), do they ask for a diversity statement also, etc. Any help will be very much appreciated. Thanks bunches!
  3. Not really @Mississippi Snow... anywhere in the world is fine. Would it help if I told you that we are looking for stuff that speaks more or less about "living above the poverty line"? You've already helped a lot... thanks bunches!
  4. As I get ready for my second round of applications this year, I cannot help but wonder if someone who attended a small unknown State school [with no known faculty] is doomed for the rest of his/her life when applying to the top graduate programs. I was told by professors from some of those top schools to pursue a "top" MA before reapplying [if I can get in one]. Yet, now that I am checking the profile of the students attending these "top" MAs, I realize that these students are also coming from mid/top tier undergraduate schools. Is this a self-fulfilling prophecy? Am I doomed? If there is a way around it, what would it be? Do you share my concerns?
  5. Elana, It looks like you have already started to build an interesting CV, which it will certainly make you very competitive when looking for museum/art gallery positions and/or applying to graduate programs. Besides it does not hurt that your program is well regarded in our field also. First of all, I believe a MA (especially the ones with a museum studies component embedded in it) is absolutely necessary in order to further your career in the field, since PhDs tend to be more important for those seeking a career in academia -- but I bet you already knew that. Of course, I know that there are plenty of museum curators out there with PhD degrees. Regarding museum vs. art gallery... Museum experience is "usually" better regarded, thus I think you should definitely look for a paid (employee type) position in one, since you already have internships under your belt. Art gallery work will also help with your application to grad schools, especially if you get to work in a "major" gallery. If that is the case, it may end up actually counting more in your CV than working for "some" museums. Of course, this depends also on what kind of work you would end up doing for each. Assuming that you are graduating from college at a young age (though it may not be the case - as it wasn't for me), I think that taking a little break from school in order to gain more museum work experience will be tremendously beneficial as long as you don't fall on the trap of "starting to make a living" and find it hard later to return to school. Anyway... keep up with your great work and focus. It is never too early to start planning your life and career.
  6. Can you guys help me compile a list of contemporary artists who work(ed) around ideas of human basic needs (shelter, food, clothing, etc), survival and endurance please? Thanks!
  7. I would also consider finding a job in a hotel. Hotels are great because: 1. They are open 24 hours (lots of scheduling option and flexibility) 2. Health insurance and benefits depending on the amount of hours you work 3. Excellent discounts within the chain (sometimes $10/night for 4 star hotels across the globe) 4. There are many positions that require minimum brain and/or physical power (i.e. reception desk) I worked for a hotel while in school and I had all of the benefits above. As a receptionist working the night shift, I often had plenty of time to do some school reading and such on top of that.
  8. I agree with Condivi! The only thing I would add is: submit your "absolutely best" piece of writing. Last year I had the opportunity to speak with several professors in the top programs in the US, and though they offered a range of opinions regarding the content of writing samples (in terms of area of research, methodology, etc), they all agreed that one should ALWAYS send their best work - even if that means submitting a paper you wrote on "medieval manuscripts," though you are actually interested in contemporary art. Some POIs mentioned that they actually prefer the latter since they believe it shows range -- they claim that they can get a good grasp of one's intellectual sophistication in their intended area of specialization through their SOPs. Others (the majority) prefer to get samples that reflect the applicant's area of interest and methodological inclinations. Anyway, I am contacting POIs this year to, among other things, ask what they would rather have.
  9. I am in a similar situation Assassina... but I am tackling a pretty huge reading load in the meantime as well... I think I will be working on a whole new writing sample also. I have figured out most of the schools I will be applying to, though am still considering a few more. Best of luck!
  10. Is TUFTS a woman-only MA program? I have just checked their current graduate students page and they are all women.

  12. I know there are many threads discussing MAs in our field already, but I thought it would be helpful for many of us to have a more focus list of MA programs known for having good placement numbers on the "TOP 10 Phd" programs... Here is what I noticed after some research and talks with faculty from the top 10 programs... Can you add and/or correct my list please? Williams, Tufts, Rutgers, UT Austin, Temple, Penn State, UNC NC, WUSTL, McGill, U Toronto... Not so sure about these: Syracuse, Wisc-Madison, UC Davis, Colgate, U South of Florida, Boston U, CUNY, NYU, Columbia. Please forgive me if you feel this is redundant. Thank you those who can help! cheers
  13. Great idea! here is my fifty cents contribution... - Yale French studies... though not an art historical journal per se, it has often published some really interesting art history articles. - History of Photography - Cinema Journal - Archives of American Art
  14. Thank you guys! I think I will skip CAA as advised and am gonna start looking for more regional underg/grad call for papers. I have been accepted to two in the Fall (SECAC and NCHC), but I would like to find more options. cheers!
  15. Hey guys... Since I have missed the deadline to submit a presentation proposal for the CAA conference next year , I was thinking of submiting a proposal for a poster session instead. Do you think that this will help my CV when it comes time to apply to grad schools? The reason why I ask that is because I associate poster presentations with 5th grade science fairs, though I have been told that it is a totally legitimate scholarly activity. What are your thoughts? cheers...
  16. I cannot speak from experience but I can share what I have learned from a couple of friends who worked with Buchloh. They both had him as their primary adviser. 1. He is a nice guy/adviser though sometimes a little (how should I say) indifferent "maybe..." They both reported that that became more problematic once they got into the dissertation writing phase. ex.: not responding to emails, not reading drafts in a timely manner, nor writing thoughtful and careful notes on work... These examples were from one of them that had to do the research abroad and felt that especially during that time it was particularly hard to get in touch with him. 2. One of them, who worked with him more recently, said that even though Buchloh [appears to] shows no sign of slowing down, he didn't think Buchloh was going to stick around for very much longer. --- One never knows though. 3. I guess, it should go without saying that he is brilliant and studying under him would/should be an honor for anyone... They both also reported that it did carry some weight having his name in their CV.
  17. Does anybody know if there is a program out there where you can pursue a PhD in Art History and an MFA in studio art concurrently?
  18. I am assuming it is this one: http://academicjobs.wikia.com/wiki/Academic_Jobs_Wiki
  19. As the title of thread says, can you guys help me compile a list of the best hist of photography programs available worldwide? And/or scholars in the area? thanks!
