  1. Hi everyone, just wondering if any students/prospective students are involved in the professional associations for librarians? When i was in an MLS program, I greatly enjoyed SLA, and actually found my first professional gig through networking done there. Unfortunately, I have to pay for memberships out of pocket so I take turns with membership - no way I can afford them all. Now that I'm hoping to return to school, I plan to join EVERYTHING -- the student rates are so much more manageable. I just got back from ALA Midwinter and had a great time. Got a chance to speak with a lot of librarians I look up to (from their writings or leadership). Anyone else involved, officially or unofficially?
  2. applied to University of Illinois. no decision yet.
  3. i actually live in CP and have not experienced any issues. I'm a single female and I've felt nothing but safe in my neighborhood. We are not near the main drag (Route 1) but we're still technically considered CP,. I'm close to the major highways (495 and 295), as well as along the campus shuttle AND metro route. I have a car but really don't *need* one. There are some neighborhood gems in College Park, Greenbelt and Laurel; iif you are adventurous you might try finding housing along Metro's "Green Line" - so you won't have to transfer if you take the train (http://www.washingtonpost.com/rentals/). Another suggestion is to go ahead and subscribe to your program's student listserv. Many times you'll find people subletting or seeking housemates.
