  1. So it looks like I will also be heading to Canada, but I'm torn between two completely different locations. I was just accepted to the University of Victoria and am waiting to hear back from McGill. Does anyone have any information in terms of housing for Victoria? Being in upstate NY I am much closer to Montreal (~5 hours), but there is almost no way I can get to Victoria before the fall, which is a bit worrisome.
  2. Regardless of whether you want to do solo work, the fact of the matter is that is not possible as you are not able to submit any IRB proposals without a PI who is a professor (who may even have to be tenured...feel free to correct me on this). Additionally, if you want to give undergraduates credit for research, it would have to be through your PI or some faculty. Essentially, everything you do will require some sort of faculty supervision.
  3. Does this fellowship work in Canada? I read on the grfp website that it has to be used at a US institution, but the website of the Canadian school I want to go to mentions the NSF as a potential source of funding for American students.
  4. Is there anything out there like this? So far I've found out that I can't apply for any Canadian funding since I am not Canadian, and aside from the Fulbright to Canada (which I wouldnt qualify for since I will already be attending the program), I haven't found anything else. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
  5. Just don't take it personally if they suggest it's not a good idea. I applied to a professor in my department whom I've worked with quite a bit (although he's not my advisor, he was my advisor's PhD advisor). While he is THE guy in my field, he felt that I should broaden my research and take what I've learned and apply it elsewhere (mind you, I've been in this lab 4 years), despite him being one of only two POIs that match my research interests perfectly. We are currently working on a grant together through the next year and so we will obviously have a collaborative relationship instead.
  6. Has anyone heard from McGill social yet? My POI told me that if there is a small incoming class that he would be abel to fund a student this year, but so far there hasn't been any activity on the results board.

When I visited last week, one of the graduate students told me it's unlikely to get in the first year. However, apparently the waitlist is continuous so this helps the second time around.
  8. My situation is a bit different in that I applied to a few international schools (i.e., Canada and UK). The 3 in Canada are still trying to figure out whether they can offer me funding and I've been told by each to essential "be patient". The issue though is that they won't extend an offer without funding, so here I am holding on to one offer while I pray that my first choice (in Canada) pulls through. With the UK I've experienced mixed results, however these were masters programs. I heard back from Essex within a month and Oxford wants to have a skype interview on April 16th. I haven't responded yet since I'm still holding out for my top choice, but at the same time I'm not sure whether I should consider Oxford since that would mean passing up a funded PhD offer. Thoughts?

I'll be heading down on Tuesday to meet with my POI. I'm hoping that the graduate students will be able to give me some information regarding where to live, roommates, etc. Otherwise I have no idea...a lot of the postings on craigslist seem to be for undergrads looking for roommates.
  10. I can't wait to finally know where I'm going and buy some new gear. Although right now it's looking like I'll be at UT and their color is burnt orange. Not sure how I feel about that lol
  11. I received an HM and my application was for STEM education. VG/VG F/G E/E I was rather surprised by my reviews, as two were stellar (except the VG came from the fact that I wasn't personal enough in my application) and one totally contradicted what the others said. I mean, two said things along the lines like "this is a coherent set of studies", "the research proposal itself is by definition impacting society and the STEM areas", "The applicant presents an excellent case for broader impacts". Then the F/G reviewer stated: "The lack of clarity raises issues about the applicant’s ability to assess the feasibility of her research. The applicant needs to strengthen her broader impacts section." I don't get it...

I was wondering about this as well. Not only am I terrified of ending up with a horrible roommate, but I am also hesitant about moving into an apartment or house where someone has already been established. For some reason that seems weird and intrusive to me, but I have no idea how to find a roommate in order to find a place together.
  13. How do you find that information? I am psychology but submitted my proposal through STEM education, so this has me a lot more worried since that field is still new.
  14. My understanding is that the search list is updated first and then emails follow later in the early morning.
  15. It has for the past 2 days, but I only started compulsively checking then so it could have been up earlier.
  16. I'm sure it's probably been said, but to avoid going back through numerous posts...what time is it expected that we can see it online (pre-email)? Or is it we keep refreshing between 11-5 hoping to get lucky?
  17. I just want to make my position clear: I am more worried about being the only person in my group to be straight from undergrad whereas everyone else has had at least 2-4 years of additional experience on top of their current degree. Thus, EVERYONE is going to be significantly older than I am, so I need to make sure that I am not in any sort of inferior position because of that.
  18. Thanks for the advice everyone! I'm holding out for my top choice to find funding, which is making this difficult. At this rate I may not hear back until closer to the April 15th deadline and I will need to submit my proposal before then. I think I am just going to submit my presentation and if my new advisor objects, I will just withdraw.
  19. Congrats on the acceptance! I was accepted into the HDCLS PhD program. I can't say much about it yet until I visit next week, but this is one of the questions I have myself (although my advisor is one of the newer professors). Hopefully someone can shed some light on this, but I will also recap what I learn next week when I return.
  20. I got accepted last week. First I was emailed by my POI with a funding letter. For about 2 days my status didnt change. Within the next 3 days I received an email saying to check my status as well as a congratulatory email from the department. Once I received these emails I logged back in and my status had finally changed to 'Admitted'.
  21. It makes sense given the dates. My bet is Tuesday. However, if that actually happens, that can be either really awesome or really awkward for me since that day I will be arrive at the school that I put on my application
  22. Thank you guys so much for the insight! After these comments my only concern now is how to manage my hair in that heat I'll be heading down next week to check it out and I am certainly excited about it!
  23. I spent all of last night reading one of the past years threads on this topic, and from what I've gathered, the search engine is updated first. By that I mean, when you go to the website to search for those who received awards, you can type in your name to see if anything comes up (I think this happened around midnight or so). Then, the emails went out at about 1-3am. ...yeah, I've been pretty anxious about it too lol
  24. This is what's starting to drive me crazy now. My deadlines for McGill, UVic, and Saskatchewan were all early or mid-December, but I JUST heard that my admittance is largely based on competing for funding. In fact, the only reason I even found out was because I reached out to my POI's. It will be a long process, but if you're patient, I'm sure everything will turn out fine :-)
