Favorite Rejection Quotes from the Results Page
NoChance replied to NoChance's topic in Waiting it Out
My secret dream when creating this thread was that all future rejection comments would be Harry Potter related. Will you be helping me reach that dream? -
Hah I get what WordlTraveler means. I'm 9 hours ahead of Pacific time, so I'll tell myself "Wednesday!" and then realize that I have to wait until Thursday morning. Sure we're all waiting the same amount of time. And yes, mostly. A quick analysis of the past 3 years shows that non-STEP responses have been between the 25th and the 28th (with a few outliers, but I go with the date of the majority). The last 2 years, the decisions were released 6 days after the STEP decisions, and only 3 days afterward 3 years ago.

Makes sense since everybody on this site is going to be or is already associated with education in some way or another. Anybody else under the potentially misguided opinion that we might find out within the next 24 hours?

I got $6.5k + a $3.5k work scholarship. I was definitely hoping for a bit more. I've seen quite a few HESA acceptances around the $13.5k mark. Applying to Harvard and Stanford and even if they give me nothing, I'd still be better off financially since their programs are shorter. Of course I have to get into those programs for that to even be a consideration...

Hah I love those where people say something like this after being rejected from a master's program: "Perfect GREs/GPA, published everywhere, PhD in same subject from Ivy. Their loss." I wonder at what point the adcoms look at you and say, "This person obviously has no idea what she/he is doing in life." I used to work in Berkeley, that's not an insult. -
Don't worry when one of us finds out, all of us finds out. I think this thread is heavily trafficked on the Google search results (hence the high view rate), so it wouldn't be too surprising if some rando came in and added that just to troll. Though the benefit of the doubt is always nice, too. Anyway, I'm saying next week. I hope.

While I'm not one to enjoy the misery of others, sometimes people do such a good job of combining heartbreak, disdain, and criticism, they create an epic rejection result post. Here's my personal favorite, someone rejected from Stanford GSE: That pretty much sums up how I'd feel too. When I'm obsessively checking the results page, I often see this post and it makes me chuckle. It passes the time, and at least their loss will not have been in vain.

What do you mean? I thought 90% of the purpose of these forums was to freak out together. Solidarity! And Stanford seems to be mostly rejections, which I guess makes sense considering how small it is. And thanks! I submitted my Penn app on December 15. One whole freakin' month later I get an email say it's complete and then another month later I get an email telling me to check (along with $ info). It's all a part of the roller coaster, I guess. That's a good sign. My stalking of historical records shows that the other GSE masters programs are sure to follow. My bet is Wednesday.

For me it was the schools that also had strong ed tech programs as I intended to bridge the gap between int'l ed and ed tech in my masters. This significantly reduced my options. The region for me wasn't as important.

Bumping this up. I think results for the Masters programs are out next week (if Results history is a good guide), and yet all is quiet on the Stanford front. Maybe the fear of rejection is keeping us at bay?
-
As if that wasn't the first thing I did!

Congrats MTU08! I was just accepted, too! Maybe they released them in a batch? Anyway, I got funding info in mine, including an assistantship, but hopefully that doesn't mean you're out of the running.

Hah, I think I was counting down before I even submitted my application...

I think this thread is about to explode (or is exploding) in popularity. A few thoughts. That seems to jive with the acceptance rates I saw on US News (on their pay side). The number is skewed lower because PhD/EdLD has an acceptance rate of 5-10% (all of whom are most certainly those anxiously waiting in this thread!). 16% for EdM is far too low. 35-45 seems right. Also Historically (ie results page) EdM decisions are early March, so it looks like at least three more weeks of winter for us!

Me too Moyru! I feel like by the time it rolls around, I won't even care that much anymore. I'll be over it. Yeah. Right.

I applied to IEDP on 12/15 (all of my materials were in well before then, just procrastinating on pressing submit). I was told the wait was a month, so a month rolls by and I get an update saying the application was complete. I emailed them about this and they said that means it was sent to faculty for review and I can expect to wait about month. Fantastic. That puts me at about 2 weeks. Of course I still check every day (not disclosing how many times a day...).

Hey Sunshine! I just noticed that you're currently an EdM student applying to the PhD program. Was that your plan all along or did it just seem like a logical extension of your studies at Harvard? And finally, does being there make you feel like you have any kind of leg up, or does it not matter at all? Good luck! Us EdM applicants are just twiddling our thumbs at the moment (or avoiding filling out financial aid apps... *coughs and points at self*)

International Educational Development Fall 2014 applicants!
NoChance replied to WordlTraveler's topic in Education Forums
Yay for international Ed masters applicants! We seem few and far between on this board. Maybe that's a good sign? Then again there are only a handful of programs out there for us. Anyway, I applied to Harvard IEP, Stanford ICE, and Penn IEDP. I basically picked every program that also offered a solid ed tech focus, as I'm aiming to be somewhere in between those two programs (more on the int'l ed side, since I already work in ed tech). I'm getting pretty anxious, but I've got plenty on my plate to keep me distracted. -
One month after submitting, NOW they tell me application is complete
NoChance replied to NoChance's topic in Waiting it Out
Hah thanks for the confidence boosters guys. This waiting game is way more fun than I expected. Either way I've still got two months left for Harvard and Stanford. Trudge on! -
Just wondering if this is normal. Mid-December I applied to Penn. Since they have rolling admissions for my program I was happily waiting the one month they said it would take to hear back. January 15th rolls around, I'm naturally checking my application status like a maniac, and the status mysteriously changes from "Submitted" to "Completed". I emailed them to see what that change meant (I had assumed Submitted meant Completed), and got a stock response saying that "completed" meant all of my materials were in and my application had been sent for review. Weird since all of my materials were in at least a week or two before I submitted. So I guess this means waiting another month. It just sucks because as I understand, the earlier you apply in rolling admissions, the better. Hopefully this doesn't diminish my chances, especially for funding... Anybody else run into this before?
-
Yep! Applying to Harvard, Stanford, Penn, and NYU (holding off on NYU till I hear back from Penn).
-
Any EdM candidates actually submitted yet? I'm going on vacation/moving and have to submit by Saturday. Ahhh! But I'm excited to make it official.
-
Hey Moyru! Sent you a PM. Ready to get this SOP business over with!

Well to confirm this, in the virtual chat session yesterday for IEP, they recommended that master's applicants not reach out to professors. Problem solved (thankfully before I reached out to anyone...). The chat session worked out well anyway since the professor I wanted to contact participated and answered a few of my questions directly.

I'd definitely vote against a Redbull. Concentration was tough, to be sure, but I think a shot of caffeine won't help unless you're really used to waking yourself up that way. I ate a powerbar type thing. It helped a lot. Anyway, there was a virtual session for IEP yesterday and they seemed to really brush off the GRE scores, but they said pay close attention to the AWA section and to try to aim for at least a 3.5 or 4. I think this is probably mostly to prove a level of English competency, as I'd say a 3.5 isn't exactly high for a school like Harvard. Master's GRE scores for the most recent class were 159 verbal, 154 quant. I think anything around there is fine. Good luck on your test!
