2014 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results

Best advice I have is asking profs. One of my professors seems to have a particularly good sense of how hard a program is to get into, and is a great source of advice in that sort of way. -

I applied for their Micro program last year and got my rejection by email three days after submitting, haha. I asked why, and they said they couldn't really tell me... too many apps, I guess. -

Got a phone call from the MSU BMS program! They said they'll email me with dates. (phew) -

I was told to be nice to the staff, too: The office members. I guess a few years ago, a student was amazing to the profs/grad students, and then terrible to the office staff. They didn't offer him/her admission because of that. -

Hmm. I am getting all of these mixed up. I think that I did both. I definitely sent it, but decided to upload an "unofficial" copy, too, haha. -

Ah, I didn't notice that. I uploaded my transcript... now trying to decide whether or not to upload my CV. The department already received my app, so I wonder if it would just annoy them at this point.... hmm. -

Oy gods. I didn't expect this all so soon. I think last year, it took much longer..... or I just applied to sillier places, haha. I was going to wait 'till early January 'till I started calling. Thanks though..... yet another reason to be terrified! -

Erm. I talked about my research experience in the academic statement, and a bit of leadership experience in a club for my personal statement, but I don't think they gave a location to upload a resume or anything like that. -

I applied. I heard back on December 3rd that my application was complete, but that is it so far. [This might not be normal: they told me mistakenly that my application was incomplete, so she emailed me back and told me that it /was/ complete, and they'd emailed me in error.] I wouldn't be worried yet, though - it's still super early. -
It's sort of hard to help if we don't know the topic/papers. When I had to come up with a proposal, the best thing I found was reading the end of the papers: Sometimes they'll suggest new ideas, or say, "we don't know why this occurs." Those are great topics for further study. You can maybe find this throughout the body of the paper, too. Maybe suggest a way to re-test what they tested? Some controls you saw missing? If you disagree with their findings, maybe find a way to test those further.

One of my friends applied to the same program I did. Apps were due Dec 1st (3rd? something). I submitted late November, she submitted early December. She got an interview yesterday, and I haven't heard yet... so maybe that school (UNC) does rolling interviews.. not sure.

Undergrad Institution: Purdue Major(s): Biochemistry Minor(s): Chemistry, Classical Studies GPA in Major: 3.80 Overall GPA: 3.70 Type of Student: Domestic, female GRE Scores (revised): Q: 157 (69%) V: 162 (89%) W: 4.5 (78%) Research Experience: All at my school: 3.5 years: enzymology/microbiology-esque lab (a few posters/talks) ~6 months post-bachelors: plant biology/biochemistry lab Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Won't show up on my app (except Emory, the only school I'm re-applying to), but I did this whole application thing last year, too. I am not exactly sure why I got rejected (wasn't even interviewed), but it may have been related to one of my letters or my SOP... or the schools I applied to. I have applied to more schools, wrote a better statement, and have changed up my letter writers a bit. It is just utterly terrifying, going through this again. Applying to Where: Emory - GDBBS (MMG) Cornell - BBS MSU - Biomolecular Sciences Purdue - PULSe UNC - BBS [Haven't heard anything about this yet, but I did submit it late in the month] Wisconsin-Madison - Microbiology Ohio State - Microbiology Essentially, I am simply terrified about going through this whole process again. I want nothing more than to go to graduate school, and honestly, if I could just get an interview, I would be very, very happy... -
Gah, I'm glad some others are as stressed out about this as me... I've begun hitting "unreasonable female" level of anxiety. I applied to four schools, I got rejected from one (UW) four days after submitting the app, which was a bit of a blow. And the other three.... nothing! I majorly freaked out today because a friend of mine who applied to one of the same programs as I did got an interview acceptance and I didn't... I didn't get anything. I am having trouble staying happy for my friends when they're complaining about how much time his SIX INTERVIEWS are taking from his schedule. I... gah. I appreciate the fellow anxiety sharing this forum provides.

Hey all. Just wondering if anyone's heard from Emory's GDBBS yet, or if anyone else applied there. I put my primary focus as Microbiology + Molecular Genetics... and I think it's the school I'm most excited about. Just no word yet, haha.
