  1. So nice to see a new thread :)  Good luck to you AccioMSW!  Do you feel comfortable with your application this year?

I am more confident! I've been volunteering at the Alzheimer's society and got a promotion at the retirement home that I work at to Activity Director. The only thing is that my contract goes until next November. However, I am able to cancel early if I give four weeks notice. So I think I'll apply anyway and see what happens. Great full time experience to have though!

  2. Hello again everyone,

So since I did not get in anywhere this year I'm going to take the year off to volunteer; a little speed bump in my plan but hopefully it will make a difference for next application season. I was just wondering what other schools in Ontario offer the two year MSW program? Ultimately I'd love to go to Windsor but I'm gonna send out a bunch to see what happens.

    Right now I know of...

    1) Windsor

    2) Laurier

    3) Toronto

    4) York

    5) Carleton

Am I missing any other school?

Congrats to those who got in this year, and good luck to those re-applying!

  3. Oh no, that's horrible. Let us know what your plan B/C/D is, if I'm in the same boat I will totally be on here discussing job prospects! Did they update your myUWindsor as well?

Yah my SIS and MyUwindsor was updated to "not admitted" :(

I was accepted for an accelerated Child and Youth Worker program at a local college, but I'm thinking it might just be best to take the year off to gain volunteer experience as I know that is what I was lacking for my application. The CYW would be great experience to create treatment plans and everything but the placement isn't until the following summer so it wouldn't even count toward my application when I re-apply in January.

Any advice is welcome about what I should do!

  4. Am I seriously going to be the only one on this forum to not get accepted anywhere?! Honestly, I've given up and am just looking for work, with plans to reapply next year.

I'm sure I'll be joining you in this! Haven't really decided what to do just yet really...

Unfortunately, I don't feel like I'm going to be accepted anywhere either. I've been looking up multiple volunteer organizations because I've honestly lost hope. Everyone seems to have so much experience and while I do have some experience, I haven't had the extra amount of years everyone else has because I am a younger applicant. If I volunteered so much then I wouldn't have as good of a GPA. It's just very frustrating when people ask me what I'll be doing in September and I don't have an answer for them. I really don't want to take a year off but I might have to just to get more experience. I know later on taking a year off might not seem like a big deal but I really just want to get started on my career path as soon as I can. This is something I've been planning to do for a long time and it's driving me crazy that my plans will probably be put on hold. Hoping for the best for all of us!

  5. Interesting! Never thought of their program as more research-based but makes some sense considering there is no thesis option. However this upcoming year is the last year that the School of Social Work will be held on main campus. It will be moving to a building in downtown Windsor the following year. At least that's what I understand from the tour I went on and their website.

Yah I've also heard that the Social Work campus will be moving downtown but with Windsor you never know when these things will actually happen for sure haha. Talk about this has been going on since 2011.

Here's the timeline on their website: http://www.uwindsor.ca/downtown/downtown-timeline-and-fact-sheet

  6. Have you heard anything about Windsor's program, AccioMSW? ex: quality of program, reputation, etc.  I'm not sure yet if I'd prefer Laurier or Windsor, in case I get accepted to both. What i like about Windsor though is the fact that most of the placements are probably local so I could move to Windsor and stay in Windsor for 2 years, rather than move around from city to city, which can happen if you go to Laurier. In addition, the MSW is held at the main campus, whereas at Laurier it's at a high school, 20 minutes away from the main campus and library.
Well I currently attend Windsor and the campus is nice. What I know about the MSW program is that it is a lot more research-based than other schools. Also, you can't specialize in any specific stream even though you choose the one you are more interested in on the application (that is just for their general knowledge of what the student interests are) but you can choose to do all of your research assignments on a certain topic so that you have a portfolio of that topic to showcase after you graduate. Every student takes the same classes so there is no variation between each student. Unfortunately I don't know anyone in the program other than an advanced standing applicant who will be starting in May. If you choose Windsor, I would suggest studying/doing homework somewhere else other than the library as UWindsor students don't understand what "quiet floors" are haha but that might be the case at every school. Hope this helps!
  7. Now that U of T offers have gone out, if seems that mostly U of T wait listed people are around these days. Isn't anyone here eager to hear back from U of Windsor?

Yes but there hasn't been any news on Windsor so it's much easier for people to talk about U of T considering all of the updates surrounding it haha. Like someone else said, we should hear back next week.

  8. Just called Windsor. The lady who answered didn't seem too happy that I was calling to inquire about the timeframe...but what else was I expecting.

She said in terms of decisions being sent out .... "we're hoping by the end of the month".

    Very short and not helpful.

    Ugh.

    End of the month...

Someone on this forum who called last week said that Windsor said two weeks from then :( so I was hoping for sure next week!

    Boooo.

  9. International student here, BA from a european institution. Native French speaker. Applied at the French Department of UofT for a Masters in Linguistics. Online status has never been updated since (still says documents pending though they received everything by February and confirmed it by email).  Wrote to them in early March and they answered they would have a reply for me "soon". Got a spontaneous email from them last week (1 month later) telling me not to worry, they would have an answer for me "very soon". Maybe in a month I'll get an "extremely soon"? Anyone else here applied at that Department? Any answers?
This is the masters in social work forum. Hope you hear back soon!
  10. Should I call Windsor...? I know last year they didn't start sending out acceptances until April 11th but every other school seems to have given some type of time frame (excluding York of course).

I emailed Windsor in March and they said,

"The application files are still going through the review process right now. We hope to start sending offers of admission out around the beginning of April. We will send out an initial round of offers to the highest ranked applicants first. As we potentially receive declines of an offer we will continue to send out additional offers until our program is full. Based on previous years history this can some times take a couple of months to complete the entire process. When applicants receive an offer of admission they are given two weeks to respond. During that time we basically have to "wait and see". You can continue to check your status on the SIS system. All applicants will receive a notice of decision. Offers are sent out by hard copy in the mail whereas rejections are now sent by email. Thank you."

  11. Do you mind explaining the qualifying year program? I've never heard of it and I'm looking into options for next year... Since it's not a degree, do you have to attend McGill for the MSW? Are you guaranteed admission into the MSW program if you complete the qualifying year program?

I did not apply but I looked into it. The qualifying year is kind of just the basics you need to know for before doing the advanced standing MSW. It's pretty much what you would do in the first year of any 2 year MSW. However, you aren't guaranteed a spot in the program upon completion, that's the downfall. I don't know if the qualifying year is useful anywhere outside of McGill though, I think it is only if you plan on attending that University.

  12. Right?! For some reason everyone I talk to about Windsor have something negative to say (even my brother who attended the university and my friend who is currently completing their Master's there). Perhaps it's a Western Ontario bias against the city as sad as it is. It always bothers me when I hear it being referred to as the "armpit" of Ontario/Canada. Great school by any standards!

Yah it gets annoying when everyone living in Windsor says that it's a terrible place to be when it's not. In fact, a lot of people who "can't wait to get out of Windsor" end up moving back because they realize it wasn't so bad after all and it's where their family and friends are. Although I would not be opposed to moving out of Windsor in the future because of lack of jobs, I definitely would not be upset if I continued to live here either. You just have to have a positive outlook of wherever you are!
