  1. It depends on the professors, the area, and the year. My year, all of us social were pre-accepted, but it seems more normal that the acceptance comes after the interview depending on how it goes. Counseling always interviews before accepting.
  2. I'm not sure Craig made the list of professors who are allowed a recruiting slot, but several other professors overlap in interests and might take a look at your application (two new professors, Marcus Crede and Allison Phillips, are definitely recruiting and there are only 5 slots allotted to our area. I think Max Guyll and/or Stephanie Madon might be picking someone up since they're organizing the visiting weekend. Gary Wells and Susan Cross will both be down to one student soon, and scuttlebutt says Kristi, Z, Craig, and Doug are all interested). The visiting weekend is the second weekend in February, so students should have been contacted if they're on the short list. That being said, it's not uncommon for someone to fail to recruit their potential student during visiting weekend and extend an offer to someone on the waitlist afterward. I'd keep hope until the beginning of March.
  3. I'm in social but we're tight-knit and I can ask friends if I don't know the answer.
  4. Iowa State in Ames, IA has a fully-funded R1 cognitive program.
  5. I've had Stylish Academic Writing recommended to me several times.
  6. I got my BA and MA in linguistics, with a thesis on language in marketing and consumer perception of ambiguous customer service scenarios. I've been accepted into a Ph.D program in social psych, and they'll likely accept my MA thesis so I can skip the year 2 project. I didn't take the psych subject test. Don't know if that hurt me or not with other schools. I definitely got the vibe that my unconventional background was a huge plus at some schools (I was first or second choice for multiple profs at the school I got into) and a big drawback at others (didn't hear back at all from most), so I'd say apply widely and contact POIs as much ahead of time as you can. I did have a psych background to some extent, but not much. 3 semesters in an infant development lab, an undergrad minor, and one graduate class. I tried to use specifics from the field in my SoP, though, to make it clear I knew the area. I also had super high GRE scores, which I was told helped.
  7. Another Salt Laker here, although I went to the Y. I live in Holladay, which is officially Salt Lake but about 15-20 minutes south by city streets of the University of Utah, verging on the more suburby areas. Keep in mind that apartment sharing is the norm here, and if you're checking shared listings through the U's website or Craiglist or whatever you will want to be aware if the ad is for "LDS standards" or mentions Mormons if you're not very conservative. It varies by person and even by gender (LDS girls are often more conservative than LDS guys, using rules like "No guys in the bedroom ever"). I don't mean to imply it's an oppressive environment -- every person is different, no matter the religion. There's just a lot of cultural terms that aren't always obvious in their meaning. Actually, I think Craigslist is quite a decent tool if you want to get a general idea of the housing market here.
  8. I see someone got an interview for Northeastern social psych. Would you mind PMing me details (POI, date and kind of interview)?
