  1. 3 weeks since I received my unofficial acceptance from the head of my department. Still haven't received my official letter from the University. Also, still waiting on any info in regards to funding. Do you think Spring Break is slowing things down? I'm not sure if the admissions at this University are open during the break. Anyone else stuck waiting? Waited on acceptances/rejections for over 2 months, now I'm stuck waiting again! UGHH!!
  2. I was supposed to get my official acceptance notification this week, according to the email sent to me 3 weeks ago by the head of the department. I wonder if they were unaware that this week is spring break? Anyways, hope to hear something any day now.

    Applying for Fall 2015

Glad to see most of music applicants on here are hearing good news. I'm getting a little edgy because it's been 3 weeks since I received my "unofficial" acceptance from the head of the department and have yet to receive my "official" acceptance from the University. Also, waiting to hear about funding. Should hear back any day. I'm also waiting on a wait-list from another school. Not exactly a wait-list, they told me I wasn't getting interviewed, but they would possibly reconsider my application later in March. Sounds like if some of the interviewed applicants don't pan out, then they will look at my file. Anyone else still waiting on official acceptance letters and funding???
  4. Hi, I am only several weeks away from becoming a parent with my spouse. Also, I found out last week that I have been accepted to begin my doctoral studies this upcoming fall. This is my first child, he will be 4-5 months old when I begin my studies. Anyone out there have experience with having children during their studies? Or is anyone else in the same boat am me, expecting a new child close to the beginning of their graduate studies? Thanks

The fact that you have 2 wait list notices is good news. Better than ALL rejections, right? Also, some schools take way to long to notify applicants, others are very quick about it. It seems that most schools take awhile, so don't freak out. I know, easier said than done! Good luck to you

Thanks! I remember being on this forum 2 years ago talking to you, feels great to not walk out empty handed this time around. Hope your studies are going well at Northwestern

    Applying for Fall 2015

Thanks everyone!! Counterpointer-- I was fortunate to apply to schools that notify applicants pretty quickly, this was by coincidence. The first time I applied some schools took 3-4 months to respond. Glad I didn't have to go through that again!
  8. Finally I can relax knowing that I got accepted somewhere, that was as close one! :)

@jenste--Yes, more than likely this will be it. I am waiting to hear a "yay" or "nay" from another school, but I was sort of wait-listed, so I'm planning on attending the school that has accepted me :)

  9. Thanks! An hour after I read your post I received an acceptance email from the school that interviewed me!

    Applying for Fall 2015

Finally got an acceptance! 5 rejections plus another school that is giving me a final decision late March (did not get invited to interview, so it is a presumed "NO") Hope everyone else is getting some type of good news!

    Applying for Fall 2015

Thanks eternal student for the positive vibes, I need them. When I got home from work today I found a lovely rejection letter in the mailbox. Geesh. Looks like this will be a big week for music applicants according to past search results. Hopefully good news for everyone. BTW, is anyone on this thread applying to grad schools for a second time around?

What's even more ironic is that composers still don't have time to compose after they begin teaching in academia. It's a never-ending battle. Thanks for recognizing our struggle kccur. In hindsight, I sort of wish I went into a different field of study in music. This is my 2nd round of applications, I got shut out 2 years ago. Yet this time around, I'm still biting my nails. I have 3 rejections, one completed interview, 1 "wait-list" and 2 other schools that I haven't heard from yet. (BTW, the last two schools were my "reach" schools, not feeling completely confident about that!) Plus, my interview was sort of shaky. Fun times
  13. So, I just interviewed last weekend. Although I felt there were many positive moments, there were also moments when I felt like I didn't have strong enough answers to the questions. After I walked out the door, I felt like they wrote the word "rejection" on a piece of paper. I know I'm being paranoid, but has anyone had an experience where they interviewed, felt weird about it but got accepted later on? Better yet, has anyone had what seemed to be a great interview but got rejected? It's hard for me to think that I would be invited, spend all of this money on a trip just to get denied.

Thanks. I don't want to say the name of the school, the internet makes me a bit paranoid. Not a "big name" school, but nonetheless, a good opportunity. Just curious as to the experiences some you have had. if any. (No school names necessary)

Anyone on here have past experiences with grad school interviews? I have one next weekend. I've had plenty of job interviews, but never an admissions interview

    Applying for Fall 2015

Totally normal to start with a rejection, I started with an interview then a rejection from a different school a few days later. Congrats on all of those interviews plasticities! Wow!
  18. So, I received an email informing me that I had not been invited for an interview, but that they will keep my application open for possible later review and give me a final decision late March. Has anyone experienced something similar to this? Is this a waitlist or an unofficial "NO." Thanks everyone!

    Applying for Fall 2015

Great to see so much activity on here since I started the thread back in August. Currently I have one interview/test in a couple of weeks, one rejection and one "waitlist." The reason I put waitlist in quotations is because the told me in the email that "I was not invited for an interview, but they will keep my application open and re-evaluate it later on and give me a final decision late March. Has anyone had a similar email/response?
  20. Hi, I've read that sending essentially the same SOP to multiple schools is frowned upon. This makes sense to me, and logical, but I am curious as to how some of you have approached writing individualized SOPs for specific programs. It seems almost impossible to me to write completely different letters for each school. I have a few themes for an SOP sketched out, but I'm trying to figure out how to not make them sound generic. Make sense???
  21. Hello Everyone, I figured I go ahead and start the Fall 2015 thread. Currently studying for the GRE, finishing my list of schools for applications. Now I need to email my rec letter writers, etc. I applied in 2012/13 for Fall 2013, didn't get any acceptances. So I took time off, worked, composed. Now I feel I have a strong application package. Plus, I'm trying to be realistic and apply to programs that are suited better for me. Looking forward to hearing from my fellow music applicants.
  22. Haven't been on the site in quite awhile, time to apply for Fall 2015!

  23. To make a long story short, I applied to PhD programs last year, did not get admitted. I'm wondering if I should apply to adjunct teaching positions. I have a Masters degree, which in my field (music) doesn't get you very far. The PhD is required for 90% of jobs in the field. My question is this: Is it even worth applying to adjunct jobs hundreds of miles away? My wife is looking for jobs at the public school level, without any luck. There are few music adjunct jobs out there. Apparently, they don't pay jack. I don't think it's worth it to move multiple states away for a part time teaching position. Any advice from anyone out there in the same boat? FYI, I'm re-applying PhD programs next Fall.
  24. Haven't been on this site for awhile, I'm re-applying next Fall. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU APPLYING!!!
  25. I rescheduled the test date, then cancelled it a few weeks later because I decided to apply to grad schools next year. Not happy that ETS hasn't notified me about a refund yet, will call them tomorrow about their negligence. The policy is you receive a partial refund if you cancel the test date up until 4 days before the date of the test. I cancelled the test about 5 weeks before the test date, haven't heard a peep from ETS. They are an unbelievable monopoly. Hopefully I have overlooked something, but doubtful.
