  1. HOORAY!!!!! Congrats!!!!! YOU must be over the moon!!!! Glad I thought to randomly check this thread today!
  2. 1) I think EdD’s are an amazing solid degree. Education has done a good job of making sure to present the EdD as equal to the PhD, just with a different focus. (Just like psychology and the PsyD) I think all education in general has started to realize that one model (PhD) isn’t going to be enough going forward and practical application, or translational models of education are desperately needed. 2) I think if your goal going forward is to continue teaching, the EdD is a reasonable choice! I think the biggest consideration would be how your university (if you are planning on staying there?) views the degree. But from what you said it sounds like it’s favorable.
  3. I know in years past they have? I know several ppl who applied to Penn previously who got feedback, but maybe that was before they started receiving a ton of applications. Greater than 5 years ago, maybe? I thought Alabama invited individuals to ask if they had questions in the actual rejection letter — along with giving a generic statement about why most individuals were not chosen. I think about the statement of purpose? however, maybe this year they aren’t due to high number of applications.
  4. Off the top of my head, I don’t think CSWE has released this. I think!!! My brain is kinda fried, it’s last week of class. But my guess is that it’s going to be from the original list of programs (from 2019) they used to have on their website. I have the PDF, and if anyone wants to find it, google DSW accredited programs. I also uploaded it here, let’s see if that actually worked from my phone... My guess that the pilot programs will most likely be from that list and/or the programs that are members of GADE. GADE has almost always been involved in the discussions regarding DSW program accreditation. DSW-Program-list-as-of-November-2019.pdf
  5. Catching up on this thread is such a rollercoaster! I’m so sorry this round was a disappointment for so many. Ask for feedback and reassess! It seems like there is a new program every year or so.
  6. Yup, focus is on there! I've also included: If the program is at an R1 school or not, length of program, length of time out of MSW required, and dissertation or capstone. I'm not sure if I'll ever fill this all in, but is interesting.
  7. First of all! Congrats to all the acceptances!!! I was avoiding homework again, so I started a spreadsheet of the different DSW programs. There are 24 in total, 15 being a member of GADE. I was collecting things like cohort size and cost, but haven't gotten very far haha. Here's a list of names for those of you who are interested. If any of you who are going to a DSW program would like to confirm any of these stats: Cost of program, cohort size, and detailed class delivery method -- I'd like to add it to the spread sheet. thinking of updating it and posting it here once a year.
  8. Congrats!!!!! I've heard good things about Tulane.
  9. My guess is that we'll stick with a model like nursing. I don't think we will do licensure at the doctoral level. I'd like to see it honestly for selfish reasons, but there is a lot of movement against it at the national level.
  10. My last two schools were on D2L and canvas. I like Canvas best. Really easy to work with. We use zoom for the synchronous classes, which can link directly from Canvas. Every professor does it differently though. I didn't realize that other programs use pre-recorded lectures from non-professors.
  11. Every program everywhere has been talking about this! I work at an academic medical center, and ALL the programs had record numbers of applicants. I feel like Penn (because of their status) probably already has a ton of applications.
  12. I love the program. I chose it for its EBP focus and it hasn’t disappointed. Going in, I was worried that it wouldn’t be rigorous because of the online format, but the synchronous classes provide a great experience . We have really rich classroom discussions, breakout groups, group projects, etc. I feel like I earn every grade. It’s hard and amazing. I was also nervous because I work with a bunch of PhDs and MDs and I was worried that others might think that my program was “lesser.” Even if they thought so, they’d be too nice to tell me ha! But I’ll discuss cases and/or class topics with them and ask them questions about their PhD experience etc. In these conversations they always seem impressed with discussions, topics, and assignments. I get the sense that they probably did, at one point, also worry about the rigor of an online program. However, like me, ended up being impressed by the quality of the program.
  13. Ngl, when I get to feeling exhausted or “why the heck am I doing this?!” sometimes I go look at the different robe packages. The tams are so fancy
  14. My friend applied SUPER EARLY and she heard back today! She’s in! Here’s hoping you get news soon!
  15. I thought they did this year due to COVID19. If if makes you feel any better, it's not heavily weighted in the application. *Double checked, it was waived for Fall 2021. They may also waive it for next year if there is any hint that people might have difficulty getting a seat for the test. Just FYI for those who might apply next year. Hopefully you don't have to re-apply to anything though!!! It sounds like your interview went okay?
  16. Well I'm not exactly sure what the schedule looks like without COVID19. So we didn't have a spring break, but we had nearly two months off for Winter break. We're going to have about 2 weeks off before summer. But our summer semester is only 6-8 weeks? so we will have 6 weeks off before fall semester starts. It's not like having the whole summer break (which I desperately need) but better than nothing. We're in the last 3 weeks of this semester, can finally see light at the end of the tunnel. This summer we start CBT I and Interpersonal clinical classes -- ending with our intensive week that was supposed to be in person. However, again thanks COVID19, they will be on zoom this year. I just hate this idea haha. I have very serious zoom/telehealth fatigue. However, they have started announcing via email (to all 3 cohorts and faculty of the DSW program) when someone successfully defends their capstone project and it's just so lovely. It's been great to see what other cohorts are working on, and seeing what timeline other students are completing projects in.
  17. I have a friend who also applied to Bama who didn't get in either. Apparently, like many of the programs they got a ton of applicants. I think I heard our admin say we got over double the number of applicants for the 20 slots. Last year we got 90 applications for the 20 slots. My friend got accepted to University of Kentucky, and they have an 80 person cohort! I haven't heard much about their program from anyone other than their online presence. they seem to be a 100% asynch program. I think if I remember correctly Alabama was asynch as well. For some reason, I thought Alabama was accepting less than 20, thought it was only 9? But that could have been for first year vs. later years. I thought I saw some in-state vs. out of state tuition cost discussion. For UTK their out of state tuition cost is 37K for all 3 years, the whole program. The in-state cost is $34k, so there isn't much difference. Like the poster said, I think Bama is the only one who offers the same price for both in state and out of state program.
  18. My program is online, but requires synchronous attendance. I have to zoom for each class. I like it, because I am a terrible procrastinator, and having actual class times and real-time sessions is a big motivator for me. We have a cohort of 20, and I've gotten to know them through group projects and class time etc. Some classes have even been split into 10, so it does seem intimate. I feel like I'm getting an experience that's pretty close to in person.
  19. Random hello here I'm currently in a DSW program -- University of Tennessee. I kept meaning to post on this thread but DSWhopeful is right, it's hard to reply on the phone haha. Anyway, I am ALSO avoiding homework and was interested in seeing more chatter about DSW programs. I'm also curious as to what everyone is planning to do with their degree. I decided on a DSW instead of PhD because I was interested in translational psychosocial research in palliative care and oncology. I wanted a program that was clinically focused, but also had a good solid base for research. UTK's curriculum fits that bill for me. I'm currently in psychopharm and research. there are more and more DSW programs all the time. Will be interesting to see how this plays out in the professional world. Excited to see how the CSWE's accreditation of DSW programs changes the field.
  20. I think the general advice is not to get into more debt than you expect to make in a year. For example (and to answer UM Detroiter's question) I am looking at medical and health social work -- that starts at about $50,000 a year. I wanted to make sure I did not take on more debt than that. I've heard several professions use that rule of thumb.
  21. I would add that experiment design is an extremely creative process. I like to problem solve, and for me the most engaging part of the process is the research design. I find it fun to try to foil myself. Or think up alternative explanations and set up design elements so it eliminates complicating variables (or tries). Also, I think that therapy can be creative, because it's not just about following set rules, you have to problem solve (a creative process in my opinion) with so many variables. You focus on a certain theory, but then you have to take into account environment, personality, money factors, and come up with a therapy solution that's "client focused." I am not in any way saying create your own new therapy, but I think the best therapists are the creative i ones who take into account all factors and develop a treatment plan tailored for the client. To clarify, is it really creativity you want, or is it something else you are hinting at? Because I think almost all aspects of social work NEED creativity to be implemented correctly. Case Management for example -- which I don't find particularly interesting, needs a lot of creativity for you to do your job well. To problem solve within the confines you are given? Needs tons o' creativity!
  22. The way our practicum works is that we have an interview with the practicum director at our program. We talk about what we like, what area we want to go into, our past experiences etc. Then she reviews what openings are available to the year you are in and within 2 weeks they email us 2 choices. We interview at those two choices and both parties have to agree to the fit. Classes start Monday. Here we go
  23. I'm going through practicum interviews. I thought I was done with the 5 bajillion page application and essays. I thought I was done with them after all the scholarship apps this summer. Nope, not done. I go to an interview on Friday for a special stipend (wish me luck) and then another on Monday for the practicum planning session. At least now I know I'm not done done, and I'll have to do this next year too haha.
