  1. the bluntness of the blog is somewhat comforting to me... at least i knew ill be put out of my misery one way or the other by next week
  2. just got an email from Maxwell saying their selection process has ended. maybe now all the questions about funding and deadline to declare and all that will start getting some traction! i dont have a twitter but i might make one so i can do one of the admitted student twitter sessions
  3. congrats taiki, leon32! i hope you guys get enough money so that if UCSD is one of your top choices you can attend without worrying about the dollars. as for me, i still havent recieved any email, so i guess its official...feels bad
  4. congrats! now i shall commence a mad scramble to my email to see whether i got any good news or if UCSD will definitively put me out of my west coast misery.
  5. i dont actually have a top choice between the 5 i put in for; i didnt visit any of the schools prior, i am in no need of financial aid and i think im going to get a top quality education with lots of networking chances no matter where i end up. i was going to wait to visit the campuses of the schools which accept me before i ranked them in my head. if i had to decide now i would say SIPA i suppose... my sister went to columbia law and i know my family really wants me to get into SIPA because they believe in legacy preference.
  6. first day of march and the threads in the government affairs section are starting to blow up haha... im happy to have an acceptance already but the wait to hear back from all the schools is starting to get agonizing. in any case, i wish everyone good luck and hopefully we all get good news the next few days!
  7. when i was speaking to current students at Columbia SIPA, they told me that my veteren status, experience in ranger regiment and my MOS (35F) would give me a big boost, or at least help cover up my bad GRE and GPA. when i was speaking to GWU and JHU though, i didnt sense they thought it was as big a deal as the NY schools because there is a huge veterens population in DC and its not that uncommon i suppose. i dont have an 'in' with any admissions folks but i would think your chances are better than good as long as your LORs and SOP focused on how your command positions prepared you for graduate study. I had a LTC and a CW3 do two of my LORs and I already know that what they said caught the eye of more than one faculty member at some of the schools i applied to.
  8. my bad! did everyone else accepted into maxwell get the email requesting proof of funding? i didnt recieve it but i also mentioned in my application that i would require no funding from the school (GI bill + i have been saving meticulously for 3 1/2 years loool). i havent heard anything from anyone since the initial acceptance email and the anticipation is gnawing at me!
  9. congrats on getting into harvard! i also recieved the reminder email this week and was kind of depressed when they said the fellowship decisions would come later than acceptance/rejection notifications. the nortan fellowship is on the low end of available funding, but 5K ain't chump change.
  10. congrats to you as well good sir i looked all around the links on the acceptance email and I didnt see a date on which we had to make a decision. the email also mentions that a current MAIR student would be in contact with us in a couple of weeks so I was just going to ask them when the decision deadline is. for any international students who cant visit Syracuse, ill be visiting Maxwell on the admitted student tour on april 3rd and will report back here with pix and a synopsis of what my impression of the place was.
  11. I've been accepted into Syracuse MAIR as well, I was also surprised at how early they got back to me seeing the deadline was only on Feb 1st. UCSD let me know I was on the waitlist in late January so that one probably wont end well..
  12. well that might be it (the Norton one is given to one American student and one from a predominantly Muslim country) but as mentioned earlier, a bunch of people didnt get it and the email had no specific or personalized information, so who got it and who didnt probably has no significance.
  13. I put in for the W. W. Norton Fellowship a few weeks back, but I got the fellowships email almost month ago.
  14. im from hong kong as well and i grew up with tiger parents. i used to get hit by my parents if i came home with C's in middle school. I really have empathy with how you describe being mentally attached to academic standing, like we amount to nothing in life if we dont get accepted into prestegious programs or use school to qualify our own self esteem. when i was an undergrad, my biggest fear was returning home to hong kong to take a cubicle job, as if my years in america had been wasted because i wasnt able to accomplish anything extraordinary. but like you mentioned the real world isnt like that. the real world is rife with unfairness and apathy. but even still we must find our place in it. you haven't been rejected by all your schools so you could still make it yet, so don't get too down. but even if you dont get a phd slot this year, dont let that feeling devalue yourself as a person. you are a highly accomplished person already and there is a place for you in this world that will one day replace academia as the thing that fills the void in your heart. if its not where you first looked, keep looking, and enjoy yourself while you search. you know that "生命滿希望,前路由我創" commercial thats been running on hong kong tv since the beginning of time? i find that today, even when im putting myself through the grad school ringer, such simple concepts still bring me comfort. hopefully it can for you as well.
  15. bump on this thread, i recieved word today that I have been accepted into Maxwell for Fall '13. I am still active duty army so I haven't been able to make any campus visits for chat with any of the professors, are there any current students/alums out there who could fill me in on the general MA/IR program there and what focus the curicculum leans towards? thanks!
  16. This is my first post on this forum so hello everyone! I applied to MPIA on the early deadline, just found out this morning that I have been waitlisted. Feels bad
