This "safety" school might send you either an offer of admission or a rejection. In the second case, you don't need to do anything. In the first scenario (more probable given that you got accepted to a much better school), you can decline their offer as soon as it comes, thus, not taking away the spot for anyone who is interested.
Mine is still in the stage "We've received your application and we are currently reviewing it", so your application must have advanced to a later stage.
This. CMU is a top university so it's only natural that a lot of people that apply there (even good candidates) will get rejected. You have 6 other chances, so give yourself a break and try focusing on the positive results that will be coming soon.
Both are great schools, but you already know that. For me the deciding factor would be funding. I suppose that a PhD at Princeton would be paid, whereas a Master's at MIT would not. If that is not a concern for you or if you have the same funding in both schools, choose based on the professor and the extent at which his research interests align with yours.
1) Contact your referee to have the letter sent as soon as possible.
2) Contact the admissions office to let them know.
There is still a chance that they'll consider you.
I am searching for a picture in Google to replace my current facebook cover using "hope" as my search term. Scrolling down I find a picture saying "Michigan News" when I have an interview in a few hours with a POI from UMich. Good sign, omen or hallucination?
I have applied to GaTech's ECE Ph.D. program and noticed that below the Application box that includes the message "Application Status: Pending Dept Review" a new box has appeared called "Graduate Admissions Note" that only includes the following text "Note from Admissions".
I have applied to 5 schools for Electrical Engineering, 4 of which have sent out a couple of acceptances (according to search for results). I haven't heard anything yet. Your post makes me even more anxious :S
