  1. I think he meant to the extent that telling a friend "Oh I got into UChicago" wouldn't resonate like "Oh I got into Yale". This isn't a reflection on the programs, just the general public perception of one university versus another. Which shouldn't but unfortunately does influence where students choose to attend if given options.
  2. I had a meeting with my mentor and that was sufficient enough of wake up call and now I'm back to warm fuzzies (I can't always say that about such meetings!). I did not mention my brief thoughts about reapplying, though I did mention that I likely had implicit rejections at certain places. His reassured me that University X is unmatched as far as not only star faculty, but faculty who actually work with students, in the area that I want to go into, in addition to providing me with an atmosphere that will be intellectually challenging (and maybe not so much give me the warm fuzzies all the time). The positive note about not getting into 'big name' (at least what those outside the field would consider big name) places is that I won't be "seduced" by a name (hmmm, sounds like me) without critically looking at a program specifically. Needless to say, everyone here was right, I just needed a few days to wallow in pity before seeing the light! He did encourage me to go to visits and it sounds like, as HHEoS said, it's not like the money allocated for travel expenses would be redirected right to fellowship funds in the case that I didn't use them. In fact, since it's a reimbursement, it sounds like the money doesn't really 'appear' until after the plans have been made. Wow congratulations! That's great that you'll be able to stay in the area (geographically speaking) and go to a dream program at the same time! In other news, I just received my official rejection from them
  3. While I would love to hope for Yale, my guess that all the calls have been made (to domestic acceptances anyway). Haven't heard or seen a peep from Stanford so we either all missed the boat, or their decisions are forthcoming (!).
  4. Will you be at the visiting days? Hopefully I'll see you there!
  5. I was thinking of this problem for a school that I have yet to buy a plane ticket for, but will/would be reimbursing me if I did. A professor I talked to brought up the fact that he wasn't such a fan of funded visits, because he felt that money would be better contributed to fellowship funding for students, which is an interesting point I hadn't thought of. While I would LOVE to visit University A, if I'm pretty confident University B has more faculty that I could work with in my area, wouldn't it be wasteful to use up that $500 that could go to a student who actually attends and needs the money?
  6. Rutgers Rutgers Rutgers.... all I'm waiting for too before I'm "done" (including assumed rejections). Unless for some reason Stanford hasn't notified yet, which even still doesn't give me much cause to hope.
  7. Mind hinting at which ones? Just curious....
  8. Had a conversation with my mother today. The takeaway: "Suck it up and move on.... Academia isn't the real world anyway."
  9. This is what I'm finding out. DGS and POIs seem to send out notifications days or even weeks prior to actually getting around to updating the online system. I assume if it's been more than a day, then it's either a waitlist or an outright rejection.
  10. I don't remember if people were discussing it in this thread or a different one, but how soon is too soon after rejection to contact departments with the possibility of receiving feedback on one's application?
  11. oh if only... *cue dream sequence* funny. curious as to why I keep getting ID'd as a guy though, I thought the username change was hint enough?
  12. Congrats to the recent Yale acceptances. I not the least bit green. Nope nope But in all seriousness, that's awesome news.
  13. This is sort of the other side on the coin about knowing... it's the not knowing. For example, correct me if I'm wrong, there's been no news on the results board this year about Stanford English (no interviews, no nothing) yet it's safe to assume they've notified the people who they want to go the next step. The same could be possible with Michigan but I highly highly doubt it (*knock on wood*). But when you see 2 or 3 acceptances from a school, it gives cause to be hopeful and anxious since, they can't be done notifying yet, right? But it's likely possible also that they have and these were the only people on Gradcafe who found out. And really there's no way to tell except to wait. But that's all anyone can do in the end...
  14. Agreed. I will get my head out of my ass post haste. Thanks bro.
  15. [insert whiny, inconsiderate moaning and groaning]
  16. At this point, how crazy of me would it be to consider applying again and going another cycle? It's not like I dislike any of the programs I was accepted into, but from what it seems like, the programs I really really really wanted to get into are going to be giving me big fat no's over the course of the next month. I know where the glaring weaknesses in my application were (GRE Subject, GPA, perhaps SOP) and I feel like if I could just spend another year improving even 2 out of the 3 (since GPA isn't really going to budge) in addition to maybe submitting another writing sample (I incorporated next to no theory in my sample from this cycle), I might have a better chance at those programs. I just don't know if I should begin my scholarship feeling the way I do now, that I'd fit into those programs but didn't work hard enough to show that. Thoughts?
  17. So it sounds like both responses are more or less saying the same thing :-/ Man, that one hits hard. It's weird how fast this process has gone over just the past couple weeks.
  18. Got my rejection from Duke today. I was expecting it but it still stung a little.
  19. Congrats to everyone who got the good news today!
  20. a Columbia acceptance has been extended, UPenn and Columbia in the same day... I love my friends but boy am I green right now
  21. Picture this scenario. My bed is lofted and I had planned to take a nap in between classes. I leave my phone on my desk underneath my loft so it can charge...... so 25 minutes later I hear a vibration, just a single vibration so I figure it's a text... whatever a couple minutes later I hear a vibration... then another one... and another one... so I know it's a phone call. I wish everyone could see how fast I hustled and scrambled to get down from my bed to grab that phone... it was a spam call <crying>
  22. Congrats!!! What are your research interests if you don't mind me asking?
