Congratulations! I know someone who just got accepted today as well. I've heard so many good things about UVA. -
0% Confidence of Acceptance

Getting a bad feeling about Berkeley. It was one of a good portion of schools on my list that required the subject test, which was/is a MAJOR weak point of my application. With it being such a prestigious program, I can't think of a reason to take me over someone with my specialization who's also done their Brit lit homework Can't believe it's Thursday already. Two more days of anxiety and than a weekend break. Oh boy. -

Ooh, I wanted to add that he also got accepted at Chicago so... I wouldn't lose hope yet. It sounds like it's another one of those "by the end of the week" deals, so perhaps decisions aren't quite finalized. -

Thanks for the input all. I consider myself a competitive person, but I don't want my spirit broken so to speak. I'm just in love with the department and the faculty and think it would be such a good fit for where my research is heading. I think at this point I need to wait to see what other schools say and actually go on some visits before setting my opinion of a program. -

My same friend who got into NYU got an acceptance from Berkeley. I'm a bit nervous now, but very happy for him! -

I just heard second hand that apparently Chicago's program is known for "chewing people up and spitting them out"? This is a tad concerning Anyone heard anything like that? My mentor did his doctorate at Chicago and hasn't said anything of the kind, but the other professor who mentioned the above is someone whom I also really respect in the department. So I know he wouldn't overstate something like that. -

^ I've been freaking out anytime I get a call from an unknown number, esp. since my phone tells me what state the area code is from. On Sunday I got a call from a California number and my heart was racing... it was just the pizza deliverer calling to confirm my address. D'oh! -

Oh, ha, that makes more sense then. Because I couldn't imagine anyone knocking Michigan. Sending out virtual hugs to those who can claim the red I see on the results page. I expect to feel the sting from UCLA soon, if only because I believe it was one of the schools that required the subject test. As a (future?!) Americanist, you can imagine it was pretty rough for me -

Anyone who does that is clearly unfamiliar with English doctoral programs. Michigan is a great school. I was told by several professors I spoke with to apply there. Edit: Just saw someone received word from UCLA this morning? Goodness... and the nail biting begins... -

He received a phone call and then a follow up e-mail (the latter presumably from DGS?). That sounds like a really good attitude. I don't think any of us need to be told how abysmal the market is as a whole. If you can find a fit that allows your scholarship to flourish, I say by all means look further into it. -

I never would have thought to call, that's actually a good idea. Thanks for letting us know. Thus far my application still says "Decision Not Ready" *shrug* Someone I know posted that they got into NYU's doctoral program (English). I'm going to take this as an implied rejection and move on. -

Definitely personalized. It sent from a member of faculty's e-mail address with a graduate studies coordinator CC'd. Nobody should be counting themselves out yet. -

Thank you! I was not expecting anything from Chicago for quite some time (as I think I mentioned in an earlier post) and then I wake up to an e-mail. I can't even contain myself right now. Not sure how I'm supposed to function at work and in classes the rest of the day! -

I saw someone mention Chicago earlier today. Are we really thinking they'll be sending out decisions this week? I wasn't expecting word from them for another 2 weeks at the earliest, especially since their site specifically mentions sending decisions in March (and not Feb-March like other schools). -

Well, my logic about today was that IF decisions for XYZ schools are already somewhat finalized, then we'd hear something today. Otherwise, if there's still decisions being made Monday wouldn't seem likely, just because there wouldn't be much done during peak hours, right? Oh why bother putting any logical sense into this process. This is much bigger than me, heh. Tomorrow... tomorrow -

19-C American, 19th/20th C African American, critical race theory No clue about cohort size, was only told that the applications were "competitive". And quite honestly I think I was shouting too loudly in my brain to be able to comprehend such details even if I was given them! And thank you!! -

Got a call from Northwestern on Friday. I'm calmed down now, but I was definitely very enthused after that call (and during for that matter!). Haven't heard from NYU at all... so I'll assume a rejection :/ -
Now that I have 1 acceptance I can relax a bit more and just enjoy the rest of the semester. I'm still waiting on all of my other apps, but it's nice to know that I do have a place to study next year and I won't have to scramble. I definitely agree that the GradCafe results page just makes me all the more antsy. Especially when I see feedback from humanities departments already
