  1. I just called SIS and they told me there isn't really a second round of funding or anything and merit-based scholarships aren't reconsidered. I was talking to I believe a grad assistant and wanted to get on with another person but it was pretty difficult. They did send me an email indicating: Congratulations on your admissions to the School of International Service! We look forward to having you join our community this coming fall 2013 semester. We have an extremely limited number of scholarship and assistantship awards to offer to our outstanding applicants, making the awarding process extremely competitive. All SIS scholarships and assistantship awards are outlined in the admissions decision letter, so if you did not receive an award with your acceptance, we were unfortunately unable to offer you one. So it looks like SIS doesn't really negotiate much, or at least not for somebody in my position.
  2. Just fellowships in general and things such as the Hayek Fund etc. Also my school has some funding available for application fees and travel expenses for interviews etc. which I knew nothing about. Woops.
  3. Now that admissions decisions are drawing to a close, most of us are beginning to decide or have already decided where we will attend next year. I thought it would be a good idea to mention some glaring mistakes or regrets you may have about the process that could help future applicants. Some of mine: 1. I did not get in to this process early enough. I didn't even start thinking about grad school until December, and didn't start applying.till mid-January By that time, I missed most of the deadlines, including SAIS where I really wanted to apply. 2. Not getting any feedback on my SoPs. I was just lazy and didn't have enough time (see previous regret). 3. Not fully grasping or looking into other sources of scholarships outside of the school. What are some of yours?
  4. I know that in my quantitative poli sci class our professor had us use Stata and said that and R are most commonly used in real-world research while in his experience SPSS is used more for academic research. But that is just one opinion. I personally like stata because it is simple to understand, although for large datasets you have to get the larger version and the price is ridiculous. See if you can manage to get a student discount still.
  5. So I'm waiting on hearing funding from Seton Hall. The funding decisions are completely separate from admissions and you must apply separately. Do you think if I explain how basically I would only attend there if I got a full ride I should say that? Would they be more likely to hand me one of these RA fellowships? I just hate coming off as a hard-baller when I'm grateful for just being accepted in the first place.
  6. I'm also deciding between SIS and Seton Hall's Whitehead. I will most likely be attending SIS barring a full-ride to Whitehead.
  7. I didn't even know this was a thing. Who would you email? General admissions of the school?
  8. Congratulations!
  9. Well the same day I get rejected by SIPA I get a letter in the mail with my acceptance from Whitehead (and a hand-written note, which was a nice touch). I applied for a fellowship there so if I get that I will attend. Right now its between Whitehead and SIS.
  10. Yea I know both Korbel and Whitehead emailed me to let me know they were currently reviewing my applications. In addition, the Admissions assistant at Whitehead emailed me to tell me about a scholarship she recommended I apply for. Even if it is not as prolific of a school, that alone will be taken into account for my decision.
  11. Yea, I've had direct interaction through email with all the other schools I applied to and not a single point of contact with SIPA. Guess that should have been foreboding. Either way, I'm kind of happy I got rejected somewhere, if nothing else to know my limits in terms of acceptance.
  12. Denied with the "most candidates possess considerable work experience, reapply next year" message thing. Well that makes my decision that much easier hah.
  13. Hah see I've always wanted to attend Columbia but I just want to get all of my schooling out of the way. In the extremelyyyy unlikely scenario I get admitted straight out of undergrad with very little work experience, I would gladly go in to 100,000$ in debt to attend the school. My logic is lacking I know.
  14. Ah I see, so in addition to this Federal Unsubsidized loan (which I see as showing up for 20k) I can also take up as much as I need just with higher interest? The former is the only one showing up for me on anything right now.
  15. Hey yall, I have a pretty stupid question that will inevitably make me look really underqualified for grad school life. Anyways...if I am eligible for the full amount of a federal student loan for grad school (20,500$) but this does not cover the entire cost, and I did not receive any financial aid from that school, what are my options for additional funding (other places to get loans etc.). I am already in debt from undergrad (yay) but my parents were able to help offset the balance with parent loans. This is not the case anymore for grad school. Any help would be appreciated. Sincerely, A Grad newbie.
  16. I applied to International Studies but at this point its probably whoever gives me the most money unless I somehow get in to SIPA.
  17. Yea definitely!
  18. I got that same message and same problem, not quite sure.
  19. Me too! I was watching limitless when I saw the email and it took me like 10 minutes for my heart to stop beating enough for me to check it, can't figure out the funding either.
  20. hyunghhhhhhhhhhhh nooooo
  21. American is seriously wanting me to die of anxiety
  22. good call didn't even think about that
  23. Welp looks like another day we won't hear from American...ahhh too much anxiety to finish my thesis.
  24. This is the day American SIS results started coming out last year, do you think we will begin hearing from them soon?
