  1. Thank you for the feed back. Do you have any thing to add in regards to anything imperative for the registration process before I register for my classes? Do you know how to choose the adviser for 596A? Can you tell me more about the interview? I already contacted them but they haven't gotten back to me. Thanks so much!
  2. Thank you soooooo much!!!! How do we register for our adviser? I believe it is 596A? When is the interview with the Staff? Or when is yours and what date options were you given. What were the questions like on the internship application? Do you think you can write me back on how the interview went and what questions they asked? Have you registered for classes yet?
  3. Hi, Did anyone go to the CSULB orientation? How was it? Is there anything imperative that needs to be done before I register for classes? Thanks,
  4. HI! How was the orientation? Was there anything real important that I need to know before I register?
  5. Hi! How was the orientation? Anything real important that I need to know before registering?
  6. Hi! I won't be attending b/c I live in NYC. Do you think after the meeting you can write me back and tell me what happened and if there is anything imperative I should know about before registering for classes? (I am CYF track.....different...but I think the info would be basically the same.) Thanks!
  7. Hello, Is anyone going to CSULB's orientation in a couple of weeks? I cannot attend b/c I'm in NYC. Can anyone give me the gist on what happens? Thanks
  8. I do not know anything about CSUDH. I would go for the cheaper one. NYU is a great school and known but you will pay a hefty price for it. Not only will you use up all your loans once you go to NYU but you will have to also pay for the NYC life. The most affordable thing in this city is the transportation....thats it! It's the one thing that makes this place cheaper than LA. PUt it this way a 3 dollar sandwich in LA is about 8 bucks in NYC. It's going to be one of the best experiences in life and you probably wont want to leave after you are here. Put it this way, you will pay a lot but have the BEST experience of your life or you can choose DH and have the opportunity to start saving for retirement and buying a house in 5 years from when you graduate (rather than 10 to 25 years).
  9. My husband was accepted to both Columbia and NYU msw program. We are from LA and moved to NYC for him to go to Columbia. I now work for Columbia University, my husband is finishing his last year, and my bosses are social workers from Hunter, NYU and Columbia. Per everyone I work with and Husband - GO TO HUNTER!!!! You are paying for the name (Columbia or NYU)! The basic foundation of every program is the same. Every social worker generally will top off at the same pay but if you choose to go to the expensive school be ready to be in debt longer than your colleagues. I am really glad my husband did the MSW first because now since I have been in NYC I have met lots of people from these universities, got to work for Columbia therefore got to really see what each university was really about. I came to a consensus to apply to Hunter, CSULB,CSULA and CSUN, which I have already been accepted to two. If you have any question about the move to NYC, please let me know. If you are looking for a new experience and to take yourself out of your comfort zone, NYC is the best place to do it. Oh and by the way my husband too had debt from his first masters in LA....so adding the debt from Columbia....we are looking at being in debt for about 25 years using the government repayment plan....and loan forgiveness....yeah we are looking into it too. These programs are what made us decide to go for the NYC move but in hindsight we would have chosen a less expensive school. Anyway, let me know if you have any questions.
  10. Hi. Since you are applying for Social work school, the people tend to be forgiving. Nonetheless, they still have a criteria, they want to make sure you can handle graduate work. It's going to test how well you can juggle reading, papers, presentations, placement work, and other things. Needless to say your GPA doesn't reflect your ability to do so. But what was your major? If your major was a tough subject like biology or something like that....it's forgivable. If it leans to a social science then it can possibly hurt you because social work is a social science and it doesn't prove you you can deal with the work load. Nevertheless, this is where you will need to have 3 strong letters of recommendations, a strong essay, a diverse resume (showing you are already in the field or done volunteer work with marginalized groups), and if you are taking the GRE's then they need to be strong as well. You should also explain your grades in your essay. The most important things are: showing you have faced adversity and how you are diverse(in your essay), showing you have the ability to keep up(GRE's and letter of rec's.), and showing how you want to make change in the community (essay and resume). My GPA is cumulative 3.4 and for my major was a 3.7. I had horrible grades as a freshman. I got a couple of C's, about eight W's and one D. But my grades rose significantly in part of my sophomore year, my junior and senior year to straight A's. Apply to programs that have a high acceptance rate. Usually bigger school who have more money will accept you....but it will still be tough. To be honest, you probably wont get into your first pick, but you will get in some where....it's still is social work school. But make sure you apply to 6 schools at least. I would shoot for Columbia University and NYU. They accept anyone....but you will get out of grad school in so much debt....you might reevaluate that decision after you graduate. I know people who got into those schools but couldn't get into the less expensive schools. At least you pay for the name and recognition, thus hopefully getting a job where it will make you shine and you can make over 100k to pay off your debt.
  11. Got into CSULB on Feb 7th. Havent heard back from CSUN of CSULA.
  12. Not sure...I sent it in Jan 5, 6 or 7th...and heard back 4 weeks later. It was really soon! I have so surprised! I hope you get in. I called them and ask what their acceptance percentage is this year and they said about 12%. Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions.
  13. Yes I received an email. It took me by surprise because I just submitted it, probably exactly 4 weeks ago! Good Luck! It was my first choice so I dont have to worry about the rest of them....yay!
  14. Yes I received an email....good luck! let me know if you have any questions. I submitted my app early Jan like jan 5,6,or 7th. So they got back to me right AWAY! Crazy right! It was my first choice besides Hunter in NYC. My husband is finishing the Columbia MSW in May and we are moving back to so I can do my MSW in LA.
  15. Living in NYC right now and with my husband. He is finishing his MSW @ Columbia. He got the full allocated scholarship from NYU and Columbia. Hindsight....it was too much money for the degree and you shouldn't choose them because tuition is outrageous! We are both from Los Angeles and moved out here for his school. I love the city and found a job right away. This place is extremely expensive but is easy to adapt to unless you cant find a job paying you over 45K. It will be tough if you make less than that....you might have to move to east harlem or out of manhattan. If you are deciding which school to go to "Hunter" is the best choice. I applied to Hunter and schools back in LA. My first choice was CSULB and I got in today(feb7).... Its so worth the price after now experiencing my husband getting his degree at Columbia. Overall if you are choosing NYU or Columbia be ready to be in debt for the next 20 years of your life......
  16. got in csulb today! i believe they are sending letters out now! good luck!
  17. got into csulb today! it's feb 7th 2013
