What's stopping me from getting a publication is that I'm not working in a lab right now. Since I found out I wouldn't be attending grad school this fall I've been searching for research positions, but I haven't had much luck with paid positions and unfortunately I simply can't afford to take an unpaid position. I just got a call back about a paid research position, but I have to wait another week or two before I find out if I'll even get a real interview. windypoplars, my GRE scores were just about average. If I end up applying for PhD programs again I'll probably have to retake them.

I applied to 5 programs this past application cycle, 3 of which were PhD's in clinical psychology. I thought I was a pretty decent applicant (4.0 from my undergrad, with a little bit of both research and clinical internship experience) and I applied to really high ranked programs, but that was before I discovered this site and realized just how incredibly competitive clinical psychology PhD programs are. I got rejected from the 3 PhD programs (didn't even get interviews), but I got accepted to both a PsyD and an MSW program... but both were ridiculously expensive and offered almost no help with tuition, so I had to turn them both down. Now I'm trying to decide if this time around I should just focus on Masters programs (that are more affordable), or if I have any chance of possibly getting into a PhD program that isn't as insanely competitive as the ones I shot for last year. So... here's the big question... ...is it pretty much pointless to apply to PhD programs in clinical psychology if you haven't been published?

Ashleeee, I called to ask some questions today and they said they can't put together your financial aid package until you finish the enrollment and housing form. If you've turned that in already I would go ahead and give them a call to ask about it.

Thanks so much for the info, Aya! That definitely gives me some hope Mscore, they want me to put down a payment by 4/19. But, I felt the same way two Friday's ago when a bunch of people got an email and I hadn't yet... I wouldn't assume you're on the wait list yet. You could still get in!
-
Thanks Aya! And, wow, congrats! A couple hours after I got my acceptance email I got an email telling me I was selected for "the MSW scholarship", and that they may potentially offer me others. Did you get your leadership and endowed scholarship emails immediately after your acceptance email? Also, do you mind me asking if either of them were enough to make any kind of significant dent in the tuition? I am incredibly grateful for what they've offered me, but I'm definitely still struggling with figuring out how in the world I'll possibly be able to pay for this.

YAY! I got accepted to USC today!!! I still have to figure out the finances to make sure I can go, but I definitely feel much better just knowing I got in

I'm SO glad I'm not the only one left! I applied before the priority deadline too (though it was only the day before... perhaps that's why I'm one of the last to hear?) Mscore, you applied for the on-campus program as well, not the on-line one? I don't know if anyone has gotten rejections yet (which is making me very nervous), but I know just last week several people got accepted. And it was on a Friday, so I'm REALLY hoping to get some news today.
-
is there anyone else on here that's still waiting to hear?
-
I've been wondering the same thing. I haven't called yet because I don't think it's really possible. Unless maybe you have a really valid reason for needing to know ASAP, like needing to give an answer to another school or something.
-
Congratulations you guys! No word for me yet Eft, did you get yours early in the day like Aya?
-
I think starting to feel negatively about a program that is making you wait is mostly a defense mechanism to make a rejection somewhat less painful. At this point I'm mostly mad because I am pretty positive they are going to be rejections, since I didn't get an interview and it's not like they're just going to turn around accept me in the next two weeks without an interview. BUT... if I were to somehow magically against all odds get accepted... I would definitely be way too thrilled to hold a grudge.

Why are they making me wait so long for a rejection?

I understand what you mean, and I would probably feel the same way if I were in your position... HOWEVER, not to sound too much like dear old mom, but if the people in your cohort judge you based on that, you want nothing to do with them anyway. -

Thank you for your optimism, frwang. I sincerely doubt I still have a shot, but I really do appreciate it. -

In my humble opinion, giving no response whatsoever is just rude. Once a decision has been made, how much energy and effort does it really take to copy and paste a rejection notification to a list of emails? You do have a point, that if a school shows such little respect for its applicants, how much do I really want to spend the next several years of my life dealing with them as a student? -
I was starting to feel like I was the only one STILL waiting. I know a bunch of people have been accepted, but has anyone been officially rejected yet? According to the results search they've accepted people as late as June, so I haven't given up hope or anything yet, but I can't imagine waiting that long! The June one has got to be off the waiting list, but still!

I'm sorry, but I'm really frustrated and I feel like there's no one I know who can relate. I applied to five programs, three of which were PhD's. Since I didn't get interview invites for the PhD programs, and I applied for clinical psych (which seems to pretty much always do interviews), I accepted the fact that those were going to be rejections. It's a bummer, but this was my first time applying to grad schools, and now I have a much better understanding of what it's going to take to be a competitive applicant, so it's okay. What's really bugging me is, it's almost April and I only just heard from ONE of the three programs. Nothing at all from the other two. Someone told me that one of those two doesn't even look at applications if you haven't been published, which I haven't. But if that's the case, why didn't they just let me know right away? The other school has told people for weeks and weeks that all interview invitations have already been handed out... so why don't they just send official rejections already? I mean, I convinced myself for a while that perhaps they were basically keeping me as a "maybe", but it seems pretty obvious that's not a possibility anymore, so why can't they just make it official by sending along a form letter email? Don't get me wrong, I get that the whole decision-making process is tons and TONS of work. And certainly take all the time you need to make those decisions. But once a choice is made, do they really have to drag us along for this long before they finally give an official answer? This all made worse by the fact that I'm ALSO still waiting to get answers from the OTHER two programs which are still actual possibilities. *Deep breath* Okay, end rant. Sorry again about that.

It's still a possibility, S. Me not having been accepted yet as a G certainly doesn't rule it out. I guess if someone out there got a rejection and we haven't yet, that's still good news, But I'm definitely getting frustrated and worried. I just want to know already!!!
-
Could they really be doing it in alphabetical order? I'm in the same boat as you, haven't heard anything and starting to get pretty nervous. And if it IS last name, I'm a G so that's not so promising... people keep asking about when apps were turned in so I figured that might be it (I turned mine in the day before the early consideration deadline, so who knows).

Hey all! I was wondering whether any of you who have received mailed notifications from schools (mostly USC, UW, and BU, but all info is welcome) could tell me whether they used your "current address" or your "permanent address"? I haven't kept an address for more than a year since I lived with my parents, so I figured it would be a good idea to use their house as my permanent address, you know, just in case... (of course now I can't think of a single reason my current address wouldn't suffice, but whatever... the application process ate my brain). That would be fine, except my parents are currently living in another state and renting the house out to my sister, and let's just say we don't have the best relationship. No, let's say I can picture her standing over a pile of mailed materials and laughing maniacally about how I'll never get them now, bwahaha. Anyway... any information you have to offer would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

Congratulations renerd! I'm surprised you heard so soon, there wasn't anything on the results page from the past few years until at least a week from now. Of course, now I will be even more jumpy every time my phone goes off. Did you maybe hear earlier because you have advanced standing? You didn't do any interview or anything, right? I'm guessing you didn't hear anything about financial aid in your acceptance email (my attendance is pretty much dependent on getting some financial help). When is your deadline to say you want to attend? Sorry to bombard you with questions... here I was not expecting to hear anything for a couple more weeks, now I can't stop thinking about it!

I applied to to USC also. On the results page people usually didn't post acceptances until late February / early March (some were even later... : / )
-
I applied to BU and USC (plus University of Washington, though it isn't on your list). I haven't heard back from any of them. Though according to the results page for BU a couple of people have said they were told all interview invitations have already been sent out. Then again, this is all for clinical psychology.

Good Sign, Omen or Hallucination - All Are Welcome!
jbean replied to Eager's topic in Waiting it Out
So for the past month I've managed to just lurk around compulsively checking the results page and reading absolutely everything that could give me clues about the programs I applied to or that made me feel better about the fact that I hadn't heard a peep from any schools. I actually just got my first interview invite two days ago! And yesterday I heard another program had finished sending out invites, and I didn't get one, so I guess that'd be a rejection. But still nothing from my top two choices. Just now I got an email from the office of financial aid for University of Washington (Seattle), one of my top two! The subject line was "Acknowledgment - Application received", which doesn't sound all too encouraging... but I have to wonder... if it was something every applicant got, why would I be getting it now, 2 months after the application was due AND right around the time the website says interview invites are usually sent out? I had already gotten the general application confirmation right after I turned it in... something from financial aid must mean I've at least past some kind of hurdle... right? Right??
