2013 SLP Admissions Thread!

I just noticed you have another choice besides NYU now, congrats! I don't know much about Montclair, but I am guessing it's less $$ than NYU? I know you were worried about money. So excited for you! -
Utah State Pre-req Program

I took some classes at USU and that was a challenge I ran into. I had a TEENY bit of money saved for grad school, and I used it on those courses, because I figured I could use loans later for the rest. It's just under $800 for one course, so depending on how many courses you plan to take each semester, you will have to figure out what will work best. At my local school, I got federal aid and I was just doing pre-reqs, I never really understand why they could make that exception, but USU couldn't....?! Maybe you could call their financial aid department and ask them if they have any options for someone in your situation. I know that doesn't give you an answer really, but good luck! -
SLP 2013 CALIFORNIA Admissions!!

Girl, I feel you there! Congrats on SFSU - pretty awesome to get in there as an out-of-stater! Keep in mind how expensive SF living costs are...... I lived there for the past 3 years and hated to leave, but I was amazed at how much money I really was spending on just living there now that I am living off way less in a more affordable city. However, it's one of the most beautiful cities in the country (in my opinion, THE most beautiful), so it may be worth it!? Could you go to FSU and then do your CFY in SF? I have heard it's not that hard to get a CFY in another city/state. But I am also currently deciding whether I should go the cheapest route or spend a little more..... Definitely a hard choice! Something that helped me decide what amount of loans I can handle was to look at this calculater thing: http://www.finaid.org/calculators/loanpayments.phtml It lets you see what kind of monthly payment you can expect. I know there are alternative repayment plans, like income-based and whatnot, but I want to pay my loans off in 10 years if at all possible, so this was pretty helpful. Good luck making your decision, I know it isn't easy!!!!! -

I wouldn't be worried about asking where you stand... the people at UTD seem very friendly and helpful from my experiences. -
Yay! Congrats! Actually, I will be deciding by this coming Monday at the latest... And if I do pick UTD, I will be looking for a roommate too! I will keep you updated!! I see your current location is Austin..... I went to UT for undergrad, is that where you are now?! I graduated in 2008 though and am now living back in Oklahoma where I grew up.

I am considering it....... It's in my 3 that I have narrowed down to. Are you going?

Hope you hear good funding news soon! Northwestern was my first choice too, but I just can't pay that much either. I am trying to weigh my options now. Eek! -
I used the books (kaplan or one of those) and studied on my own. VOCAB VOCAB VOCAB. That's what helped me do really well on the verbal. It's amazing how many of those "common words" they have in there actually show up on the test! Good luck!

I observed an SLP locally where I am that works at a private clinic that does audiology & SLP, and she didn't do a program with any special track for CI. She does therapy specifically with children who are getting / have gotten CIs. Just a real life example for context! -

My guess would be that they would review the syllabi for the courses you've taken, and hopefully some you could skip out on and others you may have to take. I've heard mixed things on this from schools because I took a wide range of leveling courses in order to satisfy all my schools. So, now, I have taken some of the courses already that I may "need" to take at grad school. I would maybe ask them how they handle that? -
Student Loans / Loan Forgiveness, etc.

I agree. I am almost 27 now though, so if I penny pinch for the next 7 years, I will be waiting a little longer than I would prefer to start a family! That's kind of what worries me. I don't think I would mind penny pinching if I were 22 and knew it would be over after that. Money makes things so difficult! My parents are SO scared for me - it makes me nervous that it doesn't freak me out as much. They think I'm crazy to take out any loans, much less $150K........... -
Student Loans / Loan Forgiveness, etc.

I know. 20 years I can handle. I know plenty of people who have had loans for 20 years and after a few years when you have a good amount of money flowing in, they say you just get used to paying each month and it's not that bad. I just don't want to be penny pinching for 15-20 years. While money is not the most important thing in the world, I definitely want to be skipping out on family vacations and all of that until I am 45 years old. Some people don't seem to be phased by large amounts of debt..... Others seem to be running as fast as they can from it. I feel like I am somewhere in the middle. I want to go to the school that is best for me, but I am not the type of person who can penny pinch for 10 straight years and be happy. I like to shop!!! -

So, if I were to say, have $150K in debt, I would probably be looking at around $1,600 a month of payments? That makes me sick to think about. That is probably at leat half of what I would get paid a month....... -

Congrats!!! Now that you're in the same boat as some of us, it's so nice to have choices, but also so difficult, isn't it?! I'm sure you will make the right choice and it sounds like you really can't go wrong with either place. Would either city be better for your boyfriend to find a job, etc.? Or does either city interest you more? I think as far as your interests go, you will get good experience with both schools. Very happy for you that you have choices!! -

As many of us are trying to decide just how much debt is too much, I wanted to ask if anyone has any good resources regarding loans and any type of programs for loan forgiveness. And, how are you guys deciding what amount of debt is "doable" for you? I was lucky enough to not have any debt from undergrad and I am feeling like a deer in the headlights when it comes to all these decisions regarding how much debt to incur..... Anyone have any advice? Thank you! And best of luck to everyone still waiting & those making decisions! -
I am in the same boat, but with Northwestern. It's my dream school and the program has focus on my interest areas that no other schools do. But I wonder if I will ever forgive myself if I spend that much on school when I have much cheaper options. I am so torn with this decision, and really don't know how I'm going to decide. :-/
