2013 SLP Admissions Thread!
SLPtoBEweee replied to midnight's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Yeah, that's really interesting! Who knows what is going on - I'm obviously not 100% in the know!! I just know that in past years they have told everyone on the same day. The only exceptions would be for like a special track or something, which I think all they have now is the bilingual track. There was another on the acceptance page before but someone marked it as spam and I guess it was because they took it down?! All I know is that most of us should hear next week! -

That's really strange because UT-Austin doesn't usually do waves of acceptances for ANYTHING. And I have friends who have applied for the SLP Masters and they have never done waves for that in the past either. I went there for undergrad and it would be really weird for them to do it that way. Their website currently says for CSD grad that ALL decisions will be sent the week of March 18th... Did your friend perhaps get a special scholarship or something? They also didn't even have a committee looking at apps until late February, so it's really odd that someone would be accepted in early Feb. They notify everyone on the same day. Very strange! If you go look at their CSD grad site for applicants, you can see it clearly says the week of March 18th for ALL decisions... -

Ugh! Insomnia! I have this unrealistic hope that Northwestern will send out their decisions tomorrow! And UT-Austin is next week... FINALLY! -

Haha! You know better than me because you're there! Next week would be fine. I am just ready to know from ALL of my schools! Are you thinking you want to stick around at Northwestern if you get in or are you looking for something new?! You have some amazing choices it sounds like!! -

I was thinking today or tomorrow too! Let's hope maybe they will come in the next 30 minutes! Or tomorrow.... It's only 4:30 in Evanston right now! -

I don't know a ton about either program, but I have a friend who has a friend a Vanderbilt and I've heard it's AMAZING. Great, new, large clinic. Basically have heard NOTHING bad about it. But UW may be the same way! I used to live in Seattle, and Seattle is an amaaaazing city! In my opinion, the most beautiful city in the US. Lots of great stuff going on there. Pretty expensive city too though! You have some GREAT options - congrats and I hope you can figure out what is best for you. I am not even allowing myself to think about a decision until I hear back from all my schools! (I think that is a subconscious stress saver because I am going to have a REALLY hard time picking a school.) We are so blessed to be able to choose. My positive thoughts are still out there for those waiting for good news! -

I totally agree! I am really holding out hope for funding at Northwestern..... I don't know if I'm being totally unrealistic though!!! I am also waiting on my last two schools! One is for sure sending decisions NEXT week, so this week I am obsessing over Northwestern!!! -

I have been too! I want to check the website like 300000 times but I think I will just wait till I see on here that someone else has heard. -

I will let you know!! Texas is not a bad place - Dallas is pretty cool. A bit LARGE because it's such a big spread out city, but lots of good opportunities for externships, etc. I am not entirely sure on the competitiveness, but that sounds about right. Plus, I bet it's less competitive in the spring because less people apply in spring (would be my guess?). I'll get back to you after I go visit! Hopefully by then you will have already gotten accepted somewhere for the fall and you won't want to hear about it, but if not, I will fill you in Good luck these next couple weeks!!! -

This is so great to hear! I have heard so many things about it from SLPs in the area I live in (Oklahoma!), and I am happy to hear that students love it - I don't know any actual STUDENTS there, so that's a relief to hear. I am really excited to go visit the Callier Center in a couple weeks!! Good luck to you with your remaining schools! Glad to have a Texan in here - I am an honorary Texan (went to UT-Austin for undergrad and looooove it down there!) -

jmarti, I am highly considering UT - Dallas. I am going down to visit in a couple weeks, and would be happy to share with you all that I find out when I visit! My research that I've done so far basically includes looking at their website, ASHA, etc. and also I have heard great things about it from people in the area I live. I am hoping I will be able to share a lot more information with you in a couple weeks! Keep your head up!!! -

Haha! My dad also keeps asking me why I don't just go to med school? It's like - because I don't want to?! Why do people not understand SLP!!!!! -

I know UT-Austin isn't exactly the easiest to get into, but they have a program focusing on bilingual children with ESL. Mostly focus on Spanish, of course, but maybe another to consider! They even have special funding for students interested in that specialty - not sure exactly how it works/how much there is, but it may be a future option! Just thought I'd share my 2cents! -
Staying Put or Trying Something New?
SLPtoBEweee replied to SLPzs91's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Agree with the others - a new experience is always nice. I have moved around over the country several times since leaving undergrad. It's always been rewarding! I am trying to decide the same again now. After being gone for 8 years in several cities, I moved back to my hometown. Now I can't decide if I want to stay in my hometown or go somewhere else again! I only picked schools in cities that I have lived in previously and have friends in, so I know any place would be an easy transition. But it's such a hard choice!! -

jmarti, i'm sorry! Looking at the past years for schools it seems like a LOT of people get in off wait lists, so I know that isn't exactly what you wanted to hear, but I hope you have good news coming your way. -

Thoughts on doing research in grad school?
SLPtoBEweee replied to seahorse's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
The reason I asked is because one of my schools has offered me an assistantship and it's going to be 20 hours a week. I thought that would be pretty normal, but now you have me a little worried if I can handle it!! I would be working in the clinic though, so hopefully the experiences would be well worth it! -

SLPtoBEweee replied to seahorse's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Sounds very interesting!! And, isn't it quite typical for all assistantships to work 20 hours a week?? I know it doesn't sound easy, but the most common funding source is assistantships and I don't know of many schools that don't require 20 hous a week for those. Am I crazy?! -

Oh, and also - I was in a special management training program at my company, so I didn't even have to go in "entry level" at ground zero. I started right after I graduated from undergrad, and I promise you - they would have considered SLP majors the same as me, because they had no clue what Linguistics even was!!! If you're in undergrad now, you should talk to the counselors that help with finding jobs, etc. (or whatever your school has to offer) - IF you had to go another route (which I definitely hope you won't have to!), they should be able to give you some other fields that may fit your needs! -

Just to give you a little perspective, I have a Linguistics degree from my original undergrad, and I worked for 4 years for a large global corporation doing NOTHING related to my degree. You'd be surprised at how little some types of jobs care about what your degree is in - they just want you to have one. Trust me, there are jobs to be found out there (and good ones!) that don't require a specific undergrad background. The degree itself is useful in finding a job in that sense. I know all the jobs out there are probably not the same kind of work like doing SLP, but I promise your degree is not useless without grad school! -

Haha yes - it's funny - people just seem so clueless about the way it works, and when it's about 99% of what I think about every day, it seems absurd for them to be so clueless. I guess I should give them a break! I am from Oklahoma too..Just moved back here a few months ago, actually. Can't decide if I want to stay or leave again now for grad school! -

Speaking of venting..... Has anyone else noticed that when people who are not in the midst of this process ask you about what schools you have heard from, when you say you haven't heard from x, y, and z, they act like "Oh I'm sorry -that's too bad".... like "that means you didn't get in". Even though they have no idea what it means.....it drives me insane! Haha. Clearly I am stressed today!
