Thought I would start a topic for us waiting to hear from Western Carolina. If anyone finds out more info let us know! I cant handle the wait haha.

I would assume that it has helped because it has given me sooo much experience, but I obviously am still struggling to get in, but my stats aren't the best so if they don't look at other things besides my GPA and GRE they would never know about my experience and would most likely deny me. The positive part about this is that if you don't get in...atleast you are getting paid to gain the experience. Since I work for a small town where they have a hard time finding someone, my pay is similar to someone that has a masters degree at a bigger city and obviously the medical/dental/vision benefits are nice too. I believe you can work in MN for 3 years with this temporary license...you have to reapply every year, but my boss says she has figured out how to get 5 years lol so obviously she has a hard time finding someone and wants to keep them around as long as possible. She has already told me that if I don't get into grad school she would love to have me back next year.

I wonder if we are already ranked or not. This sucks!

Just got an email from Western Carolina. Anyone know if everyone was considered for second round decisions?

I am currently doing this. When you look to apply for jobs most jobs will write that the prefer a masters degree. There are only a few that say its mandatory. The ability to be an SLP is limited to the schools i believe. By law the schools are suppose to hire a person with a masters degree but if they prove that they tried.. they can hire a person with a bachelors. Once you get hired the school applies for you to get your temporary license. Its best to apply starting like july. In Minnesota there are tons of jobs and i applied to 3 and got hired at 2 and had an interview at the 3rd one but I cancelled it because i accepted a position. There are tiny towns around Minnesota that cant get anyone to move to their town so my particular job I have now is for a cooperative that services a bunch of little schools. I work at 2. There are 3 other speechies at my coop and only one has her masters and she has been there forever. My boss hired 3 of us last year and really struggled finding someone. Of course the town is not the most desirable.. but for a school year or two its really not bad. I do everything that an SLP with a masters does.. All the paperwork, assesments, treatment without anyone else in the school with an slp degree to help me. At first it was scary but you catch on really fast! If you have other questions let me know!

Do you think they would allow you to call the admissions office and just tell them that way?
-
did everyone that has gotten accepted at Western Carolina so far receive an assistantship offer?
-
I got my first waitlist! hopefully somehow I get bumped in. Any hope is good hope.

I got an email today day talking about how they received my financial aid. Nothing special but I was just wondering if anybody had been hearing from them. I am really nervous.

Anyone get an email about financial aid from Western Carolina? or has recently?

I think that anything involved with special needs is good. Volunteering is always a positive thing. You could look into volunteering with Autistic children or if you are more interested in adult..volunteer with people with TBIs. Every state is different so I am not sure what all they allow or have where you are from, but lots can benefit. My sister taught a pronunciation class to pilots from China from a military base so they could say all of their commands correctly so nobody misinterpreted them. You could volunteer at a school for the Deaf or a school that focuses on cochlear implants and hearing aids. Also you could start taking classes towards and Autism certificate. If relocation is an option you can come to somewhere like Minnesota where you can be an actual speech teacher with a temporary license or move somewhere if you land a SLPA job.

What kind of experiences do you have so far?
-
Don't feel embarrassed. Last year when I didn't get into grad school I was embarrassed and it just makes you feel worse. Mainly because my sister had gotten in a few years earlier on her first try...off a waitlist though. When it all came down to it...my sister was the best support system because she understood how hard it was for her to get in. My mom had a really hard time because she didn't understand why I wouldn't get in. My sister had ideas of how to better my application and I feel like I have done so, now the grad schools just need to get to my letter of intent to realize this. The school I went to for undergrad... I don't know any of my friends that got into grad school...but I also don't know many of them trying to better their application for next time around. Its likely that you are in the same boat as many of your fellow classmates. Look to them for support. Hopefully you get into one of your schools, but while you wait it out..start thinking about what you may do next year to help your application.

Staying Put or Trying Something New?
Dutt0058 replied to SLPzs91's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
go somewhere new! Its only two years. I recently moved from Minneapolis to a tiny tiny town in Minnesota and even though it was a huge change, it has been a great experience. After living here, I know its not the type of town I want to live at forever, but it was a great change from an always busy city. Although you are just moving a little ways, the change may be just what you need and if you put a little effort in your friendships, you won't lose them. I still talk to my friends all the time. I am having more of an issue deciding if I get into grad school where I need to pay out of state tuition...do I take it? I am so curious about traveling around and this is the time in my life to move somewhere different for awhile.. if Minnesota's laws don't change..I get loan forgiveness after 10 years which means that in the end I really wouldn't pay that much more...but what if that program gets cut? It just makes me worry. -
Hopefully we still get accepted but if not I hope its atleast a waitlist.
-
Did you get an email?
-
are you in state? or out of state?
-
I did not hear from Western Carolina yet hopefully they just have notified in-state so far. Probably unlikely.

I have been really emotional these days too haha. I have been watching the Dawson's creek seasons all over and right now its been all about getting into college. It's terrible. Its nice having an older sister that is an SLP because she was waitlisted or denied when she first applied..she got in off of a waitlist. I unfortunately was not lucky enough to get in off of the waitlist I was on. She has a lot of positive input and ideas though for me which is nice. My mom has a hard time with it because she doesn't understand why I wouldn't get in.

I know! I just hope that they look in to my application more than just my GRE and GPA.
