  1. Hi, does anyone know when ETS will list the October date for the test this year? I'm trying to send abstracts to conferences, and I don't want to have to pull out of a conference because I have to take this test! Thanks!
  2. GC is taking PAMLA by storm this year! Congrats!
  3. I usually just say, "Dr. Whatsyourname: please find attached my abstract for the whatever conference." I sometimes include a heading in the body of the email with my name, institution, and name of conference.
  4. Hi, from my understanding, when people refer to the "advanced literature section," they are referring to the literature subject test. ETS (the company that makes the GRE) does not have a more advanced literature test than the subject one. GL!
  5. Omg, I just spit out my lunch on the computer screen. Thanks for that! It made my day.
  6. Hello, so I just won a departmental award! YAY! The awards ceremony is tomorrow, yikes, and I have to present 5 minutes of my paper and a bio. Does anyone know what I should include in my bio? I haven't really done anything yet--just finished my MA in English. Also, what part of my paper do you think would be best to present--intro and conclusion? Any advice on presenting a part of a paper and writing a brief bio for something like this would be greatly appreciated. Hope everyone else is having fantastic luck today too! edited to add...I don't know what I'd do without these boards!!!!
  7. Got accepted to present at PAMLA , and I just found out that I can probably receive a grant covering conference expenses---any ideas if it's ok to be a member/present at both the PAMLA conference and the SAMLA conference. Hope everyone else has been getting good news!!!!
  8. less crazy than I am for planning to do it with 5 kids (the oldest will only be 9!)
  9. Thanks Swagato and Brier for the info on Research institutions! In answer to your question, I am doing it for a traditional academic career. I think that there are some advantages to doing things in the order I chose: I got to have kids and enjoy being a sahm, and now I get to show them that you can have a career and be an awesome, involved parent. I have more determination than I ever did when I was younger: I haven't slept an entire night in 9 years; I know that it doesn't matter if I am sick or tired--I have to keep going; I will bring this to my Phd program; for me, it isn't a question of if I will finish--I have no choice but to finish in a timely manner: I am moving my family for this; I am setting an example. Will I be at a disadvantage when I hit the job market--maybe, so I guess I better just kick butt, publish, present, and do everything I can to be a great candidate. When I reach tenure, my kids will be going to college, and I will be able to devote even more time and energy to teaching, researching, and writing. As a plus, I will be doing what I love, so I will enjoy the ride! Thought-provoking question though, Swagato.
  10. I've heard this info about research one and research two institutions before. Is there a super secret list somewhere that lists which schools are R 1 schools? Thanks!
  11. I'm 35. I walked in December at my M.A. graduation 9 months pregnant with my 5th child. It's crazy, but fun. Also, I feel like I am so invested in this---I know the value of every spare second, and I can organize my time well (I understand what it means to be busy with 5 kids under 8, phd apps, conferences ... ). I think it actually helps!
  12. Perfect, yes, I think you are right, thanks!
  13. Thanks, good idea!
  14. Yay! I also submitted just one...here's hoping!
  15. Thanks, I knew someone would know something about this! So, I guess now I have to decide between submitting 1 or 2. Thanks for checking!
  16. Anyone know if you can submit multiple proposals to the cfp for the SAMLA conference. I'm sure that you can only present one of the proposals (if accepted), but I know that PAMLA (for example) lets you submit multiple proposals. I can't find anything on the SAMLA website that answers this question. Anything to up the odds of getting to present
  17. agree 100%. I actually took 10 years off and had a large family. Now I crave every second I get working on this stuff! If you really want to do it, time away can make that clearer sometimes. I always knew I wanted this, but now I have the energy and focus that will help me succeed. Which ever way you decide, I wish you the best!
  18. Good question! I graduated with my MA in December, and I'm currently applying for Phd programs, so I have been putting my MA institution....Anyone have any insight?
  19. Thank you for this spreadsheet; it is SUPER helpful for us Fall 2014ers (if that's a word)!!!!!!
  20. Thanks! That's what I thought, but I wanted to double check!
  21. Thanks, that's what I thought when I originally planned this, but then I had a moment of panic!
  22. I'm supposed to turn in a proposal for a work on Eng lit 1700 to present. I was going to present a paper on George MacDonald's Lilith, but then I realized he is Scottish. Would this work? Is he considered a writer of English literature? thanks!
  23. Does having 5 kids count as extracurricular activities While I got my masters I took care of the kids (took evening classes), served on the nursery school board, served on the elementary board, and was room mother for two classrooms. I agree 100 % about the time management thing. I feel like I actually get so much more done now because I don't waste much time (except right now when I should be writing and am browsing this forum ).
