  1. Rose, it's for English. I don't know why it says comp lit under my name? I should change that
  2. Just got an email...waitlisted...shaking with a variety of emotions!
  3. I check the status website of my top choice obsessively. Seriously, I have an addiction. (although in my defense, in past years they have started issuing acceptances the last wk of January
  4. Haha! I totally agree! I got an email from the grad coordinator of one school that said "congratulations," and I had a mini heart attack until I realized it only said that I have completed my app. I have been absent since September too. My dh got transferred, so my options for applications were severely limited, and my life has been crazy getting all my kiddos settled. I can barely breath from nervousness. Hey, miracles happen, right? I've missed you all.
  5. Thanks, I needed that today!
  6. Thanks, I wonder how many versions of my SOP I will have before this is over! I knew you all would feel my pain!
  7. I don't really have a problem having to take some extra classes--after all, I love it (and that's why I'm in it)--if it means that my dh has a job to support me and the 5 kiddos while I'm getting my Ph.D. (he would have one if I went to Wisc-Madison). But, as ComeBackZinc said, each person has different needs, and I can totally understand someone not wanting to do it. I just wish I knew what schools would accept me (and that I would accept) so that I could just apply to those
  8. Cool! I'm working on travel funding myself. Hope we both get some!
  9. ...is not enough to adequately state my research interests, strengths, and goals. In my (I guess) verbose opinion! Arg! Why must some SOPs be so short, esp when they are the key factors to admission. ok, back to writing; I'll stop venting now
  10. Thanks for the info! This is indeed disappointing because the department seemed like such a great fit for me! I will probably still apply because it is one of the few geographic areas that my dh will have a guaranteed job.
  11. Did anyone see that Wisconsin-Madison changed their policy and wants students to start at the beginning and not with an M.A. for the Eng Ph.D. program. I still really want to work with some people there despite my previous M.A. I'm thinking about calling the department.
  12. Thank you! That's very helpful. I'm thinking I should leave off my research interests and references?
  13. Hi, I need to submit an abbreviated c.v. to apply for some funding for a conference. By definition, I would think this would be a shortened version of my c.v., but does any one have any clue as to how long it should be, and what I should include on it? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!
  14. anyone else going to be at the SAMLA conference?
  15. I am only doing conferences for pieces that I have already written. I figure then I don't have a huge added work load, and I get valuable feedback which will help me become better at this whole experience. edited to add...RoseEgypt, writing a new piece sounds super stressful. Hope it goes smoothly and quickly for you
  16. When I asked one of my LOR writers if 12 was too many, she said I should apply to even more if the fit was good and I had the time and money. I guess this begs the question: how many schools are you all applying to? I'm sticking with about 12, but it's intense to read all this stuff and craft good individualized SOPs (and research all my POIs).
  17. I am really overwhelmed by it all--proposals, conferences, studying for gre lit and gre, my sop, researching schools, and especially reading articles and books by all of my POIs! It doesn't help that the baby (5 months old) of my 5 kids prefers that I focus on him nonstop . Oh well, half the fun I guess! I just see it as one of a series of incredible challenges to overcome in order to do what I love (and keep my fingers crossed that I will eventually be able to get a job at the end of this ).
  18. Congrats! No, I didn't apply to that one, but I am waiting to hear from SAMLA.
  19. I check in a few times daily, too. I guess I just haven't had anything new to add lately. Just the same old grind of prepping for the GRE subject test, reading books by my POIs, preparing conference proposals, and rewriting/rewriting/rewriting my SOP. What's everyone else up to?
  20. Wow, a September date, crazy. Thanks for the update. I will also take that Sept test.
  21. I would, but I am bringing my dh and my baby. I will have to sneak out of the conference every two hours or so to feed the baby---that should be interesting! I am going to prove that this all can be done with kids (even if it kills me )
  22. YUK! Thanks for letting me know. It makes it hard to plan things with most of the conferences taking place on weekends in Oct and Nov!
