? about cfp etiquette
crazyhappy replied to crazyhappy's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Thanks everyone! Would it also be ok to propose the original version of this paper for a conference (not the adjusted version that focuses on one author)? I know that people often publish papers after conferences. I want to maximize my potential with the paper--esp. since I have two good versions of it. I would just wait and see, but everything is due by the 15th, and I have no idea if it will win any of the prizes, be published, or be accepted for the conference (which is why I want to do all three to maximize my chances). I hope this makes sense. Thanks again. -
Seriously, I need help here. I have to randomly search JSTOR several times a wk to see what other people have to say about all the random thoughts in my head. I graduated with MA in December...they are about to cut me off from my access through the school. What will I do! No JSTOR for one year until I "hopefully" get into a Phd program. I must find new hobbies!

Hello again, I have another question for those in the know.... I submitted a paper to my Gender Studies Department for a departmental award (no publication, just an award). I am now in the process of reworking this paper---it originally discussed two authors, and I am now changing it so that it focuses on one author in a much more comprehensive manner. Is it cool for me to submit this new version of the paper to a cfp contest (that results in publication). I'm assuming it is since the original version I submitted was for a school contest and I have changed the paper, but I wanted to double check. Any thoughts would be appreciated!!!

I'm doing the same...it's nerve-wracking!!! Awesome that you found out so quickly Rose Egypt! -
Thanks! I have a B.A. in French and a background in German and Italian too. My M.A. is in English with a grad cert in Gender Studies. Here's hoping that they are looking for something like that! If you don't mind, I may pm you if I have any questions as I get into the nitty gritty of it. Thanks again!

Fall 2014 applicants??
crazyhappy replied to sugoionna's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I totally would as long as you tweak/make better your app. I am not comfortable doing so without an awesome reason--but that's because I don't think I would like it if I was a prof. I did contact my old advisor from the French program of the school I plan to apply to just to get any advice and to let her know I plan on applying. I know a lot of people do contact POI's though, and it can be very beneficial if done the right way (I would think). edited because I realized I used the word "totally" way too much! -

Good call! Thanks! -
Thanks Proflorax, I guess I had intuitively done what you suggested--split some of my papers to use as proposals for different conferences. It's good to here your confirmation of this as a good way to go. Here's hoping I get to list at least one good conference on my c.v. before I turn in my apps!

First of all, I appreciate the feedback I have received so far! I am so grateful to have a place to vent (and obsess) about my questions! So, I have another question....If it doesn't state otherwise in the guidelines, can I submit the same abstract to more than one conference at a time? For example, the PAMLA and the SAMLA both have cfp deadlines on April 15th. I have set aside money in my budget to do a conference (hopefully before Ph.d. apps are due), so would it be ok to send abstracts to both conferences to increase my odds of presenting? Also, I know it is better to present a paper in a non-graduate setting, but the SAMLA conference has a special graduate student session that perfectly aligns with my research: I graduated with my M.A. in December, and I am applying to Ph.d. programs now, do you think I would be eligible to be considered a grad student?). Thanks in advance for any thoughts. Hopefully, we can keep this thread going to thoroughly hash out our issues with conferences

stupid question
crazyhappy replied to crazyhappy's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Thanks! I'm assuming they are fair game to try to get as advisors and to use as POIs in my SOP???? -
Hi, so what does it mean when you see that a professor is the "insert someone's name here" professor? I keep seeing all these profs that are the "Newton Yada Yada Professor of English" or something like that. Is it ok to pursue these profs as POIs? Sorry if this is a ridiculous question. I'm assuming that this is just a professorship supported in some way by a fund or fellowship, but I just want to be sure. Thanks in advance!

Thanks everyone! I submitted my proposal, but I'm second guessing how I wrote it now that I have found some more info online about writing effective proposals. I didn't really explain why there was a need for my topic or how my research fit into the genereal academic disussion. It was supposed to be 200 words or less, so I just sent a succint summary of my thesis and how I proved it. Oh well, I guess it was a good learning experience. I will endeavor to write more effective proposals in the future!

Hi, I posted this over on the writing/presenting boards, and proflorax kindly responded, suggesting I should ask over here. Several of my Profs suggested I submit proposal abstracts for conferences. I know that MLA in any of its forms/subsections is prestigious, but I found a call for papers (from the U Penn site) at a conference in Scotland with University of Aberdeen that says its organized with the intention to lead to a publication of its proceedings. I have the perfect paper to fit this conference (not that I would necessarily get it ), but would I ever need to worry that I could get a conference like this and it would actually look bad on my c.v.? I looked up the contact: she is a professor there with an interest in the topic of the conference. Hopefully, that is good. I am so new to all of this, and I have not been able to receive any advice from my old profs. since I graduated in December. I am trying to do everything possible to strengthen my apps for Ph.d. programs, and I'd hate for my ignorance to hurt my chances. I know I need to get out there and start doing conferences, but I feel like a fish out of water. Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Conference Prestige (English)
crazyhappy replied to crazyhappy's topic in Writing, Presenting and Publishing
Thanks! I will post it on the Lit/Rhet/Comp boards. The org is the University of Aberdeen, and I looked up the contact: she is a professor there with an interest in the topic of the conference. Hopefully, that is good. I should really contact my professors. I just always feel like I'm bothering them: it literally takes me a day to write up/send an email to them whenever I do--you'd think it would be a piece of cake since I write so much . Thanks again! -

Thanks for your thoughts. I think I was really worried because the withdrawals/incompletes undergrad happened at my dream school for my Ph.d.program. I worked like crazy in my MA program to make up for this, though. Wow, I can't believe I'm the only crazy one with 5 kids doing this! Thanks again! -
Ph.D. in Eng vs. joint Eng and Comp Lit
crazyhappy replied to crazyhappy's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Thanks, if you do go to WUSTL, there were some great profs in the German dept, and I absolutely love the former chair of the Comp. Lit dept (she was my undergrad advisor and moved to Romance lang chair I think about 2 years ago). I will definitely contact the department. -
Hi, I'm working on my sop for Ph.d. programs. I have a decent undergrad gpa (3.3.) at a top institution, but I have alot of withrawals and incompletes due to health issues. I then took 10 years off, got my health under control, and had five kids. I just completed an M.A. with a 3.97, several awards, and 5 kids . I want to let the admissions committee know that I am past my health problems and explain the time gap, but will the fact that I have 5 kids scare them off or will the fact that I did so well while caring for 5 children be a positive that I should highlight. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
