SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship/CGS Doctoral Scholarship 2016-2017
poliscilady replied to rugox's topic in The Bank
Hi all - I've been lurking on this thread for a solid two weeks now. Once I saw a few people had results I just could not wait anymore - so I emailed my graduate chair about 20 minutes ago and already got a reply! Successful application! CGS-D for three years! I am literally dumbfounded. I didn't even get forwarded by my uni last year!! Long story short - be a pest and send an email! -
2014-15 Cycle for Canadian Political Science Programs

No, graduate students are not typically on the admissions committee. All the info above is what I've garnered from being in the department for 1.5 years (I also did my MA at Queen's) and from reports from the graduate chair on the structure of the programs in upcoming years (re: size of PhD and MA programs). -
2014-15 Cycle for Canadian Political Science Programs

Current Queen's PhD here - Queen's first round of PhD and MA acceptances officially went out on February 26th (some PhD offers have been known to applicants since mid-February). So if you haven't heard from the department via email, it doesn't necessarily mean you are rejected. The program is taking a lot more graduate students this year (24 MA, 7 PhD) and they usually "over-offer" by a third (with the expectation that a third of the offers they send out will be rejected by the applicants in favour of other programs) and also usually give until the end of March to consider the offer, so if an applicant is ranked "lower" it might take longer to hear back this year (that's just a guess on my part though). It's still really early so I wouldn't panic yet, but if you haven't heard by March, I would email our graduate assistant - to my knowledge if you are rejected, you won't hear if that's the case until quite late in the season (late March to mid-April). If you (or anyone else considering Queen's) has other q's feel free to pm me -
2014-15 Cycle for Canadian Political Science Programs

You go to U of T for the name recognition and the prestige, not for the funding. The most highly ranked candidates receive only $1000-2000 in funding, everyone else gets an acceptance and nothing else. -

I'm actually from Vancouver - I just moonlight as an Eastern Canadian And yes, we are all winter and we should get double-doubles and build our own quinzee to drink that beer in! -
I withdrew my PhD acceptance from York and accepted elsewhere. I hope you get your funding info well before their deadline in order to really consider it! They send it in the mail - I received the funding letter on THE LAST DAY of their offer deadline. Luckily I emailed the graduate assistant to get the info over email because I didn't have time to wait for snail mail. Not exactly the most well organized department, but good luck!

Queen's has sent out Economic offers already. Typically Queen's won't start sending out rejections until people accept/decline their offers and spots fill up or they need to send out another round of offers. I would email or call the department and just inquire - nothing wrong in asking.

I definitely disagree with you - Kingston has SO much to offer and is in no way "awful". Especially if you are athletic and like activities outdoors (kayaking, canoeing, biking, hiking in the summer; snowshoeing, cross country skiing in the winter etc). Plus, for a smaller city, the downtown nightlife in Kingston is great - tons of unique restaurants with great food that is comparable to downtown Vancouver food culture (where I'm from), lots of place to go drink with friends, whether you want to go to a sports bar, dive bar, or irish bar.. (there's a lot of bars). The culture here is really great as well - farmer's market, LGBT film showings, museums, The Spoken Word on Friday nights, history walking tours etc... And if you have a car and care to venture out of the Queen's campus bubble there is plenty to do on the west side of town (even if it's just going shopping or to the movies). Basically, if you are considering Queen's MPA or Queen's in any fashion, please don't let one post sway you. It's really all about what you make of Kingston, and I've come to learn that the undergrads here (I'm a graduate student) usually don't appreciate the city for what it is.

University of Toronto (Political Science Phd (F14) Comparative) Rejected March 14 Note: "Emailed the department after seeing the posts here. Got a fully funded offer at Michigan, so I'll still be in the north! WINTER IS COMING. YOUR LOSS CANADA." As a Canadian, this made me laugh out loud. But seriously, the north IS Canada. We ARE winter -
I have a few friends (three to be exact) who have received acceptance from Queen's MPA this week and last, fyi. They've been offered admission with funding to come in the mail.

My go-to: Salmon (get it frozen) brush with some olive oil, sea salt and pepper; bake for 20 minutes at 450 degrees. Side? Anything in the fridge - but usually roasted veg or some sort of salad. Cheap and quick!

Ah thanks for the info! - I'm contemplating pulling out just because I have great offers from other schools and it's not a great fit for me (UBC doesn't even have my main field, Gender) so I was surprised I even made the wait list... Plus not sure how long I should wait to hear about an offer that may never come!
-
Anyone wait listed at UBC? Just curious what the chances are of acceptance off of it... (I applied for PhD Political Science, and I have offers from 3 other universities so I'm wondering if I should wait it out or just withdraw at this point).
-
Congrats!! That's so exciting! Seriously, sometimes all you need to do is email and the results are just waiting for you . I'm not sure what my first choice is at this point - probably tied Queen's/York! I was hoping to do work with Professor Barbara Cameron and Professor Karen Bridget Murray at York. What about you?
-
Thank you! I heard through email from Jlenya Sarra (one of the grad assistants) - said in the email I've been offered admission and will hear from the Graduate Program Director with a formal letter outlining the financial offer shortly. I checked MyFile and it still says "No Decision Yet" so they must not have updated their system, just sending out emails with admission notice.

Hey! Just wanted to chime in on this post - I'm from the Lower Mainland, but currently doing my MA at Queen's, so I've been here about 7 months now. I totally agree with the above comments/advice. I am currently in a 2 bedroom west of campus (about a 10 minute walk), which myself and my partner rent from an individual landlord. Our rent is fairly cheap ($1000/month) considering we are close to campus, in a spacious unit (it's a bit older, but has been nicely fixed up), and have close access to anything we need (Loblaws, gas, even Cataraqui/Target is only an 8 min drive). The downfall of renting from a private landlord like we are, is we sometimes have trouble getting things attended to if there are problems, due to the fact that our landlord owns a few properties, but their main occupation is working/travelling in the military. So I totally agree that renting from one of the larger land holdings companies is the way to go! Also, in regards to transit/needing a car - I brought (aka drove) my car from BC and it is quite handy to have - especially if you would like the freedom to go whenever you'd like without being dependent on the bus. Also, very nice to have to make weekend trips to Ottawa or Montreal. Be careful if you bring a bike here! There is definitely a problem with bikes getting stolen, even if locked up properly (within two weeks my partner's bike and his officemate's bikes were stolen on campus). So if you do go the transit/bike route, invest in a U-lock. Also, while Kingston is definitely a smaller city than Vancouver, it has a lot going on. Lots of live music, interesting/yummy/high quality restaurants, festivals, the market etc. Coming from a smaller than vancouver city in BC (which is comparable in size to Kingston) the night-life/downtown core is just really exceptional (in my opinion) and much better than what I am used to. If you have any other questions - let me know! I'm super happy with choosing to do my MA here - no complaints

Dr. MacDonald is AMAZING - not just a great academic, but just a truly genuinely nice and caring person. Great choice! Moore is away at Oxford for 6 months so most likely why she didn't respond. Haven't had Lister but I've heard great things about him. All solid choices! I'm not entirely sure how many PhDs they will take this year - they had about 120 applicants for all the streams (PhD & MA). All depends on funding and whatnot. Sigh - fingers crossed, eh?! Oh, and Dr. Rita Dhamoon at UVIC is a phenomenal prof if you were looking for second supervision at UVIC!
