6 figures? Woa.

Well I get to choose three options. How does it work at other colleges? Do they just let you teach some random course you may have no clue of? On topic: I went for two introductory courses and the hard one as third option. Let's see what I end up with

How much should a grad student be paid?
DeleteMePlease replied to MorganStar32's topic in Officially Grads
What do you mean with that? Don't you work on research you want to do (you picked the school and adviser after all) and that will make you "famous" in your field eventually? -
Well the only question is whether your visa is still valid right? The only problem you might run into is that as you have taken your leave of absence you most likely will need longer to graduate. Thus, I would check if the visa is valid for the whole duration of the program. But that shouldn't be a problem now...

It's even more strange when you're not form the states. In Germany we don't have American style graduate schools, so nobody knew what the big deal was when I got accepted. Also, nobody knows the institution I am going to although it's one of the best schools for my field. It's also not common here to do your Ph.D. directly after your bachelors, so I just told most of the people I am doing my Masters I ended up just changing my facebook profile to the new school so everybody knows about it and I don't have to explain it anymore. I really don't like using facebook but for such purposes it is kind of useful. (I did not figure out how to use this life event feature though. There is no option for grad school acceptance...)

Visa Status Question
DeleteMePlease replied to ahlatsiawa's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
Afaik each visa applicant gets some background processing (nothing to worry about). Just wait the few days until your passport arrives. I'm sure there is no problem. -
Hey, so right before I was accepted into college I broke of with my girlfriend and now I'm single and about to leave in two months.. I am in this weird state where I am just waiting to leave the country. Meeting new people does not make any sense anymore. I feel like I should enjoy those last free months but I really just wait for the time to pass by. Anybody else feeling the same way?

About Brown University Computer Science PHD
DeleteMePlease replied to AaBbCc123's topic in Computer Science
I assume you refer to this: http://jeffhuang.com/rethinking_the_phd_application.html ? Do you have outstanding programming skills like he is looking for? If not, I don't think it will be easy. As he says they admit only 10% of the applicants. -
Deciding between Ph.D. and Masters should only be about what you want to do. If your ultimate goal is research, go for a doctorate. If not, or if you're unsure, I'd go for a Masters. Also..your grades look good and UNC is a decent school.

I really don't think writing has any weight in CS. I only got 3.5 (~40 percentile) in AW and was accepted in an Ivy League school. Also, a fun (and strange) fact about the AW part. I took the GRE twice and got the exact same questions...

Is vaccination required to get F1 visa (USA)?
DeleteMePlease replied to arnds's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
Well, you only need your passport (including. the F-1) and your I-20 at the airport right? At least this is what I read like a thousand times. I might bring my admissions letter as well just in case, but I would really be freaked out if they'd ask for any medical records. -
Yeah that was also my experience during undergrad (I already did some tutoring). I forgot to mention: in my program you have to take exams on some undergrad classes as well no matter if you already took them at your previous institution. So I will most likely have an exam on the harder course anyways.

Sorry if this has been asked before... My school wants me to pick three choices for TA duty. I am not really sure what to do and what will be expected from me. I would like to pick a course that interests me and is taught by my POI, however I am not an "expert" in the field (not a beginner either). Will making a mistake/not knowing a certain subtopic be a problem, or is this normal for a first year? Should I maybe rather take a course that is easy (e.g. some introductory course)? My gut tells me to always take the "hard" option, that forces me to learn more about my area of specialization.

Thanks for all the infos! (You are right the B-1 is only for temporary business)
-
I think a DS-2019 (and also an I-20) can only be issued for the length of the program. However, I wonder if you could take your wife on an F-1 visa and then let her apply for a B-1 visa or a green card.
-
You have to check with the programs that interest you which courses are required to apply and take those. But you already seem to have a few basics so that is good Considering you have a solid background in maths and good GRE scores your chances aren't bad. I would at least try to apply for one or two top20 schools, if I were you. Maybe you can even use your Ph.D. experience in your application. Do you have publications? Or maybe your old adviser can write you a LoR? You have to mention it in your application anyways so why not try to show that you learned something during that time even though you quit?
-
I agree that AW part is pretty useless, but I think the verbal section has some weight in the application too. Also some schools post minimum scores you have to meet to be considered. But anything above 70 in the Verbal and 90 in the Quantitative part should be enough imo....
-
Don't worry the scores a good enough (Gosh, we should pin this info to the top of the Forum. Everybody is freaking out over GRE scores...)

Yeah I found that too now. Thanks again! For others. This site sums up most ways to get to Ithaca: https://www.hotelschool.cornell.edu/industry/executive/gmp/participants/travel.html
-
Thanks! The "limo" is 85 bucks which seems like a lot for a 1 hour ride. Trailways and Greyhound don't seem to go from Syracuse to Ithaca. Thought it would be much easier to go that distance as it doesn't seem that far... Decided to fly to Syracuse the first time I travel as I found a (kind of) cheap flight and feel more comfortable with all my belongings. Next time I think I will go for new york + bus as it is cheaper and also doesn't take longer.
-
Any Idea how to get from Syracuse (Airport) to Ithaca? Are there any buses going?
-
(Yay now there are two Cornell threads!) The question is: Do you even want to live on campus? Off campus is much cheaper and as an international student you really need the extra money (for flights etc). Personally, I would look for rooms in college town. It is pretty close to campus and still affordable.
