  1. Hi, my visa interview is impending and I was wondering in case the embassy denies me a visa and I reapply, may I reuse the same I20, or do I need to have another I20 issued by another school? thanks,
  2. I'm sorry, but are you looking for scholarship to study at USA for to study at your home country (with a USA scholarship)?
  3. Does anyone here ever denied an immediate visa on the ground of 221 G (that is further security clearance is required on the part of embassy)? Can someone share his/her experience regarding that? What are the documents embassies usually ask to be submitted for that? How long does it usually take to get the clearance? Thanks in advance,
  4. Dude, I know I have become lazy after finding gradcafe and look for readily available answers here. But you don't have to point that out Thanks. Thanks.
  5. I'll be joining Rutgers this fall and I was wondering how should an international student like me should go about finding housing off-the campus. Also is it necessary to rent some place before applying for visa? Thanks
  6. Can someone tell me what are the vaccinations (if any) that is required in order to get F1 visa for USA. Also a weblink would be of good help. I'm from India by the way, if that helps. P.S.- I couldn't find any related material on the local consulate's website Thanks.
  7. I don't wanna sound discouraging, but I think you are aiming too high. If you intend to apply to such high profile schools, you need to have multiple publications, preferably an exposure to the US system of research via summer project over there or something of that sort. In any case, if you don't wanna compromise with the school ranking, you have to increase the number of applications (at least 20). Don't mix yourself with the domestic students who may have similar backgrounds.
  8. While I presided the journal club of our med school, at least 7-8 of my juniors sought help from me for that reason: some because they were morbidly fearful of public speaking, some as they wanted to get better in their act. I always suggested three things: first a few peptalks like most of the guys already gave here, next a propranolol tablet (it's a beta-blocker that is used by hundreds of performers to evade stage fright) and then if that doesn't work tablet alprazolam (usually .25; .5 if that doesn't work the day prior to the presentation) Don't worry none of these drugs affect your cognition, so your performance can only get better.
  9. Is it necessary for the visa photograph to be similar to the passport photograph?
  10. Hi, I will be joining a grad school this fall (Rutgers) with the usual offer of a scholarship (around 30,000) for a year in a biomedical science related program. After that I was said to be supported by the research funds from individual research groups (which is the customary thing). I was wondering if a grad student's payment gets deduced or increased following the first year of study. I do understand that it may differ from school to school and program to program, still I was trying to understand the norm. (by the way, if someone may exemplify with amounts it would be great). thanking you in advance,
  11. Rankings are very misleading. While I was interviewed by schools like Tufts, UAB, UC, Rutgers, Albany and offered admission in Rutgers and UC (yet), I received rejection letters from the so-called safety schools such as SIU, University of Louisville without even any interview. A few 'middle-tier'/upper-tier school also rejected me such as IUPUI, UVa, NYMC etc. So it is very unpredictable. The schools see how the applicants 'match' to their program and from my experience, I can only tell you that nobody can predict which school might see you fit. So it is prefereable to apply to schools with larger classes, better fundings and those who are not 'ivy league', to remain on the safer side, but still nobody can promise anything. Also, as per as I know, the usual number of application is not twenty, but around ten for the domestic applicants and 15 for international students. I applied to 12 programs (which is on the lower side, being an internatinal applicant) based on this stat
  12. No I haven't. Tulane seemed most irresponsible of the lot I have applied to. During and following application, none of the faculty members nor the administration stuff responded to any of my mails. No returning of international calls that I made. No letter suggesting the completion of application. I guess I just wasted the money by applying there.
  13. That's an excellent query. I too applied in NUS this year (still waiting to hear from from them) but in spite of its reputation, considered it mostly as the 'safety school' for a few reasons like the provision of funding is not very clear cut and separate application for funding and admission is bound to scare people away while the US schools are very clear about funding both during application, during interview, even in offer letter. The ranking of NUS and NTU are very high (so is of Honk Kong university of Tokyo University), but not higher than the mainstream US schools (even those that are not Ivy league). Also sometimes you have to sign some contract to work in Singapore after getting your degree in order to get the funding (at least that's what I heard). So these are very obvious reasons for making US the number one destination for international students. This lack of clarity regarding funding is not the feature of only Singapore. Most of the European and Australian universities are not very clear about funding either (except for the German or Austrian programs).
  14. Hi I received and accepted an offer of admission for doctoral program in US. Now the steps that follow to procure F1 visa are, as per as I understand: Receiving the offer letter Accepting the offer Receiving the Acceptance letter Applying for I20 Getting I20 form Applying for visa Please let me know if I have missed any part. Also a couple of queries: Though I am receiving a full scholarship (not research assistantship or teaching assistantship) do I still need to submit a bank statement while applying for visa or would my offer letter would suffice? Is it possible to start visa application process before getting I20? Thanking you in advance,
  15. Pardon me, but it sounds like you are heading for huge amount of unneeded risk for absolutely no good cause. I'm not aware of the academic environment of your country, or your gradschool to be precise, but in most cases your move would be deemed as possible career suicide since almost all grad students long for tenure track faculty as their advisor (as you know better than I) who has good funding and who's personable. So unless you are moving to the new lab to join a very exciting and very prospective project, I don't see any reason for jumping the ship.
