I don't think its uncommon for academics to have long-distance relationships. It's just not always feasible to be in the same place while pursuing advanced degrees, research, internships, etc. I have several friends who have gotten into different PhD programs as their partners. Even after school, some friends were offered tenure-track positions at universities different from their partners. It's hard to turn down tenure-track, especially in an economy like this. But they have made it work and keep inching closer to each other by reentering the job search each year. They make room for visits when they can. I'm lucky because my fiance and I are both writers and have similar goals. He's going to come to Switzerland with me (fingers crossed!) if I get the Fulbright. But I will probably make a similar sacrifice for him down the road and follow him somewhere. We are both adventurous though and can't wait to see where the wind takes us! It's just important to keep in mind that everyone is different. Different things work for different people. You can't really follow the stereotypical pattern for the "perfect relationship" if it doesn't fit your situation nor should you try to!

Fascinating! That sounds awesome. You'll have to start a blog about your experiences.

I am really curious about your Fulbright to DRC. Are you at all nervous to go there? Is it still as risky as it once was?

OMGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's crazy when you put it that way. Congrats to the Russians!

That happened to me too! I entered a gmail address, but the "recommended" email went to my University email. Where did your acceptance email end up coming to?

I am feeling the same way about Switzerland!

WHOA! I am just getting caught up with the boards. Looks like yesterday was a big day. Congrats to everyone who made it! Now I wish that Switzerland would get their shit in gear and announce soon...

What does this even mean?!?! Did they award prizes and then revoke them? That is my worst nightmare!
-
Oh NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! And here I thought maybe this was the week. I hope that is worst case scenario, and we'll find out before May.
-
That is a much better perspective! I should adopt it

Every day that I hear nothing, a little piece of me dies.

Yeah that's a good point. Sometimes I feel like I am the only one left waiting! But there are still a lot of us who haven't found out.

Hey lunita! Any theories on when we'll hear from Switzerland? It seems like its one of the last Western European countries to report.

Congrats German ETAs!!! So happy for you all! I hope you continue to hang around to keep the rest of us entertained Still waiting for Switzerland...

I had a dream over the weekend that I was rejected. When I asked the IIE why, they said it was because I failed the "costume portion of the competition." All this waiting is clearly making me lose my mind!
-
I asked that earlier and those who answered said from the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. I think if you get rejected (and none of us will, of course!), it comes from IIE.
-
Thanks! Now I know whether my heart will sink or soar as soon as I see something pop up in my inbox!
-
Congrats to everyone who found out this week! I'm curious, did your emails come from the IIE or the FFSB?

I'm a science writer, so they are about the particle physics research at CERN.

I'm applying for a Fulbright in Creative Writing as well! I'm recommended to Switzerland to work on a series on nonfiction essays. Just wrapping up my MFA at Northwestern right now.

I just found this forum yesterday, and it's such a great resource! Did anyone else apply for a Fine Arts grant?
