  1. Purdue ChE is sending out their first round choices this week. Visit is in early March I belive. Second wave will go out sometime after the visit. Good luck to all you applying and making decisions, I was in your shoes last year.
  2. Hi Cafe-ers, I'm a current grad student @ Purdue, and as some of you know there was an incident earlier this week on campus where someone was killed. This is not at all normal, W. Lafayette/Lafayette normally has a very low crime rate. The timing of this event came up in a disscussion with a few of our professors as they are staring to send out acceptances and were hoping this did not negativly reflect upon the school. I was currious if something like this would actually affect someone's decision to attend a particular school.
  3. I just offically accepted the offer yesterday....eek!
  4. Northeastern keeps doing the same thing to me. I think they just send them out to everyone once they have your email. I even got one from a school I looked into, but never ended up applying to.... Oh well.
  5. I'm in a simmilar situation, considering turning down a top 20 school (in the midwest) to go to a solid state school in a better location personal wise (new england). Both have interesting professors, and top 20 is giving me more money, but im starting to wonder if that's worth the stress I know it will put on my relationship of 5.5 years. I want to get a good education, but I want to be happy too. Balancing personal life and future prospects is a stressful decision.
  6. I am planning to go back to industry afterwards. My concern would be with turning down a top 20 program to attend School B might hurt my jobs prospects in the future. But I am leaning towards B for location and fellowship reasons. Any thoughts?
  7. I did a handwritten thank you note and some homemade cookies. I got thank you's for my thank you's

What's the current going rate for places around UConn? I'm still deciding, but it is in my final 2. I'm currious as to where people live and how much rent/utitlites would be per month? Perhaps somewhere within biking distance?
  9. Everyone (including my family) seems to want me to pick school A. I think, as I've had another week or so to mull it over that the 2 things I can't seem to let go of with school B are: - the fellowship, -and the location. If I go to school A I would be putting a lot of stress/distance on my relationship (of 5.5 years) and I don't want to lose that. And there are a few really interesteng professors at school B as well. I think School A is the more risky but logical chioce and school B is the safer more homey chioce. It is going to be a hard decision...
  10. So, I've only heard back from 1/2 the schools I applied to and I'm giving the other half up for lost. I'm basically deciding between Purdue and UConn. Other than location (Conn is prettier and closer to my sig. other of 5 years) I'm begining to wonder if the only reason they are still on my mind is the fact they are offering me a fellowship. From other Chem-E's out there, do you think it is worth me considering UConn+Fellowship over Purdue? There are interesting professors at both schools. And I think I am nervous to move so far away from my family/sigO.
  11. So, I’ve narrowed down my choices between 2 schools. Financially, School A. is giving me more $tipend (about 2000 more per year), and housing is cheaper there. They are a bigger name and higher ranked in in my field (like top 20 Chem Engineering on multiple lists) than B. School B has a prettier local (State A is very flat, and is kinda depressing looking). They are a decent state school and they are much closer to my current location, which would make the move significatly easier. I think there are a few more professors at A than at B that I would be interested in working with, but School B is offering me a fellowship. I would be a bit concerned that the caliber of students at School A would be higher and it would be harder for me to get to do research with the particular professors I would want, whereas though there are less options at School B the fellowship basically gives me the ability to work with whoever I want, so I don’t have to worry as much, and there are some interesting professors at school B. I am really torn between these two programs. I’ve had good visits at both and keep going back and forth. Is the chance at going to a more well known university with potentially more opportunities worth passing up on the fellowship at a lower ranked states chool that is in a better location for me? And suggestions/advice?
