  1. Just been notified that I am in the wait-list for Miami. I was expecting a rejection by this time since the first acceptances were sent a week ago, so this is pretty good news! EDIT: Ops, posted in the wrong thread. Haha
  2. About MIT, I think they will likely make a senior appointment soon. As Leiter himself reported a few months ago, Karen Bennett (Cornell) turned down an offer from them. Also, Cornell lost both Ted Sider and Jill North (which, I think, there wasn't enough time to include in the 2014 PGR). I personally used the PGR as a first-guide tool, but haven't really relied on it to decide where to apply. As an international student applying from a non-English speaking country, I must say that the PGR was of a great help to help me familiarize with the admissions process in the US. It takes some time until you realize its limitations, but it still does a good job informing those who don't have any personal guidance to go through the process.
  3. Hey! Welcome! Do you mind sharing where you've been accepted and wait-listed? Also, good luck on your other schools!
  4. Congrats to everyone accepted yesterday! Anyone else applied to Miami? There was a single first acceptance, but no further notifications afterwards. I know acceptances can be spread out, but I'm wondering if I have reasons to be concerned already.
  5. Looks like Miami released at least one acceptance. I applied there and received no notification yet.
  6. Yes, I thought of that too. But I wouldn't travel with a scholarship, I would only hold it for the months I will be in my country. When I depart from Brazil, I would resign and let another person benefit from it. I'm waiting to hear back from schools to ask about my situation. I think it doesn't make much sense to e-mails DGSs now since I don't have any offer. The only possible complication is if I get into waitlists (I have to formally accept the scholarship by the first week of March), but I guess I can still make things work. -- @topic I think many of us will start hearing from schools this week. Good luck everyone!
  7. Hi, great topic! I will share some thoughts about how I've been dealing with the likely possibility that I don't receive any offers. I was lucky to receive an early offer from Otago and will be moving anyway even if things don't work out in the US. My plan was first to move to an Anglophone department and, if possible, to a well-ranked one. As for the first one, I've already accomplished that and I've been told by many people that although Otago's not highly ranked, it's a great place to do philosophy. As for jobs and my future in the long run, I often find it helpful to "forget'' about these things and give them a serious thought only when the time comes. I had a quite unpleasant experience after I entered college (I was a Physics major and had everything planned out, things like where I would do my Masters and PhD, and even what I would study my entire life. All of this was by the time I started as a freshman. *Note: in my country, we pick majors before we enter college) and that kinda of showed me how naive I was about planning too much in the long run. I gave up my Physics major after a few months and started a Philosophy major without thinking too much. All I wanted was to study philosophy, and the rest I would figure out later in my undergrad career. It turns out that in hindsight I think this was the best thing I ever did. The point is that I try to apply this posture as much as possible now that I am applying to graduate school in a country I've never been to. As I conceive of it, the most important thing in this moment is to be able to continue studying philosophy, preferably in a place where my work is appreciated. Whether I will be able to land a star job, or even any job at all, is something I delegate to my future self to think about. This not to say that I don't think whether a school would improve my chances of landing a good job, but that it's particularly helpful to "forget'' about it when you get stuck in bad thoughts about your prospects of being admitted.
  8. That's really good to hear. And yes, this is exactly what I am asking. The only legal commitment I would have to the program is to defend my MA thesis (or else I would have to return my scholarship money). The department coordinator told me that I can take all the required courses prior to July, and then come back to Brazil in 2016 or even later to defend.
  9. Hey guys, there is something I would like to ask for your input. I've been admitted to an MA program in my country and classes start in March. The academic year here is similar to the calendar year (it usually starts in Feb and end by Nov). The thing is that I've been offered a pretty generous scholarship and they are willing to make things work out so that I can receive it until July, and if I'm offered a place in the US, I would leave my scholarship for another person and then only come back in January 2016 to my thesis defense. Both my prospective supervisor and the graduate program coordinator have agreed on this, but I don't know if that is something even to consider from the point of view of US universities. I mean, I'm not sure it's possible to start a possible PhD in the US and being linked to another institution in my country at the same time. The "link'' would be only institutional, no money would be involved since I would give up on my scholarship by the time I leave the country. Do you guys think I should ask programs in case I receive an offer? It's a great opportunity since I wouldn't be able to commit to any job for such small amount of time, and the money I would receive is far more generous than any job I could get at this time. Plus, I could raise some money by continuing on studying philosophy.
  10. I've been there only twice, so I don't really know the city. Anyway, I've met a couple of Brazilians who have traveled around and they told me that fruits and coffee from here are really good compared to other places. Wow, that's crazy. I wonder how I would react in such situation
  11. Cool! Where have you been? I think that it depends on where you live and on your monthly income, but the South and Southeast regions are pretty reasonable (I live in a mid-sized town in the South), though violence is a concern pretty much everywhere. I don't hate the climate here, but I think a few more colder weeks would be welcome! Haha
  12. I'm on summer vacations (which means free 24/7). I've been busy mostly with a few pieces of philosophy and watching sitcoms. When I'm inspired, I write some drafts of what might become future papers. I am also working on a Peirce's paper (about the use of diagrammatic reasoning to aid scientific discovery) with my former advisor. On the more relaxed side, I enjoy playing videogames when I don't have anything else to do. I've spent quite a lot of time on Diablo 3. As someone from a tropical wheather country, I must say that I envy you guys. In summer times, air conditioners are sine qua non conditions to even think about reading/doing philosophy!
  13. There is also an acceptance from Ohio State. Someone posted an acceptance from Duke too, but it's one day later than the previous wait-list post. Maybe those who checked their status and didn't see any update might want to have another look.
  14. Wow, reading Ian's history makes me just want to give up. Anyway, I have very mediocre GREs (see my signature) and an educational background (only a B.A.) that in no way compares to institutions in more developed countries like the US. I've changed my mind a thousand times during the past three years deciding whether to apply or not. I decided giving it a shot since some people really believed in me, and studying overseas was something that I really wanted for my life. I borrowed money that I didn't have from my parents and I could afford a few applications. Luckily enough, I got an early admission from an Anglophone department, which made the past few months much more easier. It's not a ranked one (I guess I'm not in the place to care about this), but a great department as I've heard. The good thing is that I can come back to my country, and if I do so, I will likely land a good tenured job here, since some parts of the country "lack'' well-qualified philosophy professors. In a nutshell, I decided to apply and see what happens. If things don't go well, at least I will know that I applied and was rejected. As the notifications have already started, hope we all get good offers and that we can meet at some conference sometime. Good luck everyone!
  15. It seems like there is a first acceptance for Philosophy PhD (University of Missouri). I'm not sure whether it is someone from here, but if it is, congratulations!
  16. Congrats on the acceptance! @topic Anyone interested in forming a Skype group or something like that? I remember that a few years ago there was an IRC channel for philosophy applicants to chill out. I really need to practice my spoken English and this seems like a good opportunity. If anyone is interested, please let me know and I will create a group.
  17. Wow, I couldn't imagine how frustrating it is being held until April 15th. Hope it doesn't happen this year again. That's a bummer .I don't know if this is of any help, but I had a great experience applying to UConn. They were the first school to assign my test scores and both the admissions office and the DGS answered my e-mails within a couple days.
  18. Does anyone know what was UConn deadline for last year? If the 2014 season results gives us any insight, there is a possibility that we hear from them this week, though I find it very unlikely given that the deadline was last Thursday.
  19. I had a dream last night that I was visiting one of the programs I have applied to. It's already happening, haha. Anyway, this would be a good time to find out about my hidden premonitory skills.
  20. Thanks. This year's deadline for UConn is January 15, so I think mid-February is a fair guess given the above variations.
  21. Hi sidevans, Thanks a lot for compiling this information and for running the blog. This will certainly help us out. Just one question that popped out of my mind after looking at both your list and Ian's previous ones: is there any particular reason for not including UConn in predictions?
  22. Thanks! Hope things go well for you too!
  23. Just checked out and all my references are in due place. It's finally over!
  24. Thanks for you kind words! He emailed me last night (actually, a few hours after I posted here) and he said he will upload it in the next days. I hope it gets there in time. I feel kind of relieved right now.
  25. One of my recommenders missed my deadlines and doesn't answer my e-mails. I've been considering alternative career paths already . Hopefully, I got an offer from New Zealand, so that makes things less worse. Anyway, I'm speding most of my time in videogames and watching random sitcoms. As you can see on my signature, I'm in the South hemisphere and we are now in summer break, so there is nothing interesting to do. I can't even work since I have to wait for results to decide what I will do next in my life.
