  1. I found this video through Lifehacker: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLDJG-F-maQ. I like how she emphasizes that you have to practice. Hope this helps!
  2. UBC is ranked 34th in the world (http://www.topuniversities.com/universi ... iversities) and it is like an ivy in Canada. However, if you're set on working in the US post-PhD, I doubt UBC will have the same punch as an American ivy. Generally, Canadian academics attend the same conferences, get published in the same journals as their American counterparts, so other than brand recognition (and the quality of the program itself, of course), there is no disadvantage to attending a Canadian school, I think.
  3. Maybe this thread can offer some insight: viewtopic.php?f=68&t=13918
  4. I posted in the Housing Wanted section of Craigslist every couple of days and received a few replies with each posting. If you're attending school in a large city, you'll probably find something by the fall. Maybe you can post specifics here (location, budget, etc.) and see if anyone is looking for a roommate. Good luck!
  5. For my master's program, I was told that we would be notified of our advisers in September during the first day of class. However, I had reached out to a professor who does research in an area similar to my interest, so I am now on her advisees list after contacting the student services coordinator.
  6. Better late than never! I don't think it's an inexcusable offense to not contact the advisor within a certain time frame. You may not be only one in your program who hasn't contacted the professors yet.
  7. I deferred my enrollment by a year, and that would be my suggestion to you if that's an option. As long as you do something semi-productive in the year off, it won't look bad professionally. However, if pushing back enrollment an entire year is not an option, start this fall; the poster above did make some excellent points.
  8. I found out that since I applied for year round housing, the under 200 rule doesn't apply. There is no telling if and when I'll get a housing offer. I started looking into off-campus housing, but since I currently live thousands of miles away, it's impossible to finalize anything. That being said, if anyone is looking for a roommate...
  9. Thanks for your input! I finally heard from the administrative staff after confirming my acceptance, so I'm less worried now. Also, is the housing lottery number supposed to be changing? My numbers are well below 200, but since they haven't changed, I'm beginning to wonder if I should look for off campus housing...
  10. How often and how much do you contact your respective departments?
  11. Can anyone offer advice on cell phone plans and services in Vancouver? Do most people use pay-as-you-go or monthly plans? Thanks!
