  1. Hey, did you have an interview ? or was the offer made straight away ?
  2. Need help in deciding between UTK and UIUC. I got an offer for non-thesis MS from UIUC (with no funding). The UTK offer comes with full funding (RA position). So this is what is going on in my head: 1. UIUC is very highly ranked for Matse (in the recent US News ranking, it was 2nd for Matse in graduate rankings). So, doing an MS from here should give me great opportunity to go for a PhD (which is my ultimate aim) either continuing at UIUC or somewhere else. The only problem is that of financial aid. I was told that students do manage to get financial aid once they have joined a program. But the email from UIUC says that "Self-funded students are expected to remain self-funded during the entire program. You will not be eligible for a tuition waiver or a teaching or research assistantship. "Does that mean there is absolutely no possibility of getting funding at UIUC ? 2. The offer from UTK is very good. It is at the Bredesen Center. The program is more multi-disciplinary as courses can be taken in different aspects. Also, I am being offered a fellowship which provides for a good monthly stipend. But, UTK is not that highly ranked (51 in the US News Ranking). So the dilemma is between a high ranked place for MS with no funding, and a low ranked Univ for PhD with funding. Views are invited. Am I missing something ? Or is there something else I should be considering ?
  3. Had an interview with Univ of Tennessee, Knoxville on thursday. Got an offer on sunday. Its for PhD in Energy Science and Engineering at the Bredesen Center. I want to focus on energy materials. Need help in deciding between UTK and UIUC. I got an offer for non-thesis MS from UIUC (with no funding). The UTK offer comes with full funding (RA position). Also, the email from UIUC says that "Self-funded students are expected to remain self-funded during the entire program. You will not be eligible for a tuition waiver or a teaching or research assistantship. " Does that mean there is absolutely no possibility of getting funding at UIUC ?
  4. I'm also waiting to hear from Caltech. But no interview either. I guess I should be worried. I haven't heard from most of the schools I have applied to. Kind of unnerving.
  5. Hey Mayank. I too got the email about the error. And then rejection letter. I applied to Stanford for MS. Still waiting for their decision. But I think they send out their MS decisions a little late.
  6. Hey guys, I have applied to MS and PhD programs in Materials Science. GRE: 169 (Q), 163(V), 3.5 (AWA). TOEFL: 118 GPA: 8.6/10 (Indian University: Top of my class in Ceramic Engineering) Papers Published: 2 papers in international peer reviewed journals Interests: Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Photovoltaics, Materials for energy applications Applied to: UIUC, MIT, Stanford (for MS) Caltech, Penn State, UW at Madison, Ohio State Uni., RPI, Univ of Texas at Austin, Georgia Tech, Carnegie Mellon, University of Maryland, Univ. of Tennessee at Knoxville, Rutgers, University of Cambridge Rejected: MIT Accepted: UIUC (Non-thesis program, no funding ) Interview call: University of Cambridge What are my chances of getting funding at UIUC once I am there? I have a lot of research experience and know how to work with a good range of characterization equipment. Would getting an RA job, once I am on campus become easier? Also, a friend who got into Cornell was telling me that since I got an MS admission call so early, it might mean that I am on their 'priority list' (or A-list going by what was posted earlier) and so if I accept the offer now, I might be able to secure some funding. Their email clearly stated that "Self-funded students are expected to remain self-funded during the entire program. You will not be eligible for a tuition waiver or a teaching or research assistantship." I don't want to commit this early as I still have majority of my applications still awaiting results. Any help of the above questions ? Thanks guys.
  7. Hey, So there is this review paper that I am interested in reading. It's by a POI that I have not contacted yet. I am no longer at university (graduated a few months back) and so don't have access to the scientific journals (the university had a subscription). Would it be ok to ask the POI for a pdf of the paper or should I try to get it from another source ? Also, would it be ok to ask him for it in the first email itself ? Thanks.
  8. Hey everyone, needed some advice. I recently got an email from Caltech saying that I have been waitlisted for the PhD program in Materials Science. Towards the end of the email they said that they expect a candidate like me to have other offers and so I should inform them if I am still interested in Caltech. As it so happens, by a stroke of bad luck, I have not been admitted anywhere yet and have only received letters of regret from the places I applied (Caltech and Penn State are the only ones who haven't rendered a decision yet). Would it be advisable to inform them of my situation, that as of now Caltech is the only half-option that I do have, or would it come of as too desperate/ somehow work against me? Also, what are the chances of someone making it from the wait list? Thanks for your help.
