  1. Oh, well then it's harder . You could try stalking their websites, maybe. Last year, the MIT meeting date for looking at philosophy applications was on their public calendar, if I recall correctly.
  2. go here: http://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/ and search for "(school name) psych*". For example, Tufts psych* shows us that for the past 2 years they got back to people in the first week of February.
  3. Yep. The actual stipend would be around 15,000, but you save them money, so they still give you some extra.
  4. Example of how it works (I think) for the PhDs at my institution (SSHRC is a Canadian external award): No SSHRC: tuition waiver + stipend SSHRC: tuition waiver + SSHRC money + $5,000
  5. http://leiterreports.typepad.com/blog/2009/12/why-isnt-there-a-centralized-service-for-grad-school-applications.html That's a blog where lots of philosophy profs talk. They brought that exact issue up in the comments on that post from today, but as for actually doing anything about it.. .
  6. Thanks for the replies so far. I would have liked to use it as an index of materials included but probably won't- some of the materials were submitted online (the application system) and they want me to submit the rest of the materials as an email attachment to the secretary, so a list of what's in the 'envelope' is kind of.. eh. I guess I will do it, but keep it brief, because I already have the substantive stuff in my SOP.
  7. Only one of the programs I'm applying to (thought I was done but not quite ) asks for a cover letter. The secretary said that if I send a cover letter, and most don't, that it would be an intro to myself and my interest in the program. So, some worries: (1) it's listed as something you need, she says that most don't submit it, but not whether this is good or bad. (2) An intro to myself and my interest in the program... sounds very much like the introduction to my SOP and the fit portion of my SOP.
  8. I just checked my current and a couple dream advisors' CVs for comparison purposes... the current one has bold titles (like Professional Experience) and positions (Professor), the dream ones have only bold titles. So... I don't know . People seem to do both.

    Plan B

    I choose Parapsychology !
  10. Heh... with the 20 I'm applying to, there's a lot of what-if stuff I'm trying not to worry about. I guess the main issue I would have would be CUNY vs. several other places. CUNY is probably one of the best places in the world for research my subfield, but I've encountered various anecdotes of grad students from there that have extremely high teaching loads for a low stipend, etc. I'd still probably end up going there as opposed to many other places.
  11. http://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/ There's a link way up top .
  12. If I get in next fall I'll be starting at 21. It made me cringe to fill out the parent/gaurdian information for Indiana (I noticed that's on your list) because I was under 21 when I applied (dec 1 international deadline, dec 8th birthday).
  13. Heh, I just double checked it on my UWO app and there was no option there either. I don't care much about it really, just wanted to waive for form's sake if I was able.
  14. Thanks for the confirmations! Just submitted. Now to make my SOP "about 300" words and mail it in, blarg.
  15. Being slightly paranoid- I'm about to submit my application to U of T but I can't seem to find a box/etc. anywhere on their form where I say that I'm waiving my right to see the letters. Am I blind/does UofT not ask this for some reason/are the laws different here?
  16. Yeah, I've been keeping an eye on that. He also has a post open for comments for other universities to say if they're not admitting anyone (so far just UCSC philosophy is not admitting anyone, and Boulder and USF say they're both doing well). http://leiterreports.typepad.com/blog/2009/11/schools-cutting-phd-admissions-because-of-budget-issues.html
  17. The registration number is seven digits, I think. It should be on the bottom right hand of the original paper score report they sent you, and the paper you get to confirm any subsequent score-orderings.
  18. I was looking at Edinburgh (mind & language yay) but was a bit confused by all the options. MSc by Research vs. MPhil, and then a recommendation that if you were coming right out of your undergrad you could transfer from the MSc to the MPhil..?
  19. I don't really know enough to say, for sure. Maximum caution = 500 words (I just checked the Anthropology page, there's no hedging like "about"), but maybe they're all right with it being a bit longer. If it's that hard to cut down, you could just email (or phone them) and ask.
  20. I did it . What I'm not looking forward to is cutting it down even more (300 words max) for Toronto.
  21. Hah, I had to do that for OSU (I'm Canadian). I imagine they're doing it to be sure about speaking English, but you think they'd be happy with an english-speaking undergrad degree/TOEFL.
  22. Deadlines and/or desire to be done . Irrelevant; apply and see . Postscript: The act of writing the fit paragraph made me realize that some universities needed to be removed from my list.
  23. At my university most of the philosophy graduate courses are also open to 4th year students, so I've been in them. I don't know about religion, but what we usually do is read and then argue with each other . Presumably more and better arguments shall be expected in later years. You might try looking for course outlines, that's what I did out of curiosity. Most of the seminars I'm in read two papers a week, whereas this one seems to be three: http://www.nyu.edu/gsas/dept/philo/courses/consciousness08Fall/ So, slightly higher load. There's a list of their assignments at the bottom. Doesn't seem too special, except of course for the higher (I assume) standard. Googled briefly but failed to find some religion outlines. Edit: this one, on the other hand, is a *way* higher workload (yay!) http://www.jimpryor.net/teaching/courses/externalism/index.html
  24. Won't answer her phone and won't answer emails- sounds like calling the department secretary would be worth a shot. Ask the secretary if your prof is sick, tell her about your troubles getting in touch with her, etc.
  25. Haha, this is something I've noticed policies for while researching schools. Most seem to think it's okay if the semester is over, but you should check your handbook or whatever. Some don't want you even asking out someone who could potentially be in a future class. I forget which schools said which.
