  1. Is anyone here applying for their master's or PhD is special ed? Where are you applying?
  2. I'd be willing to look over it for you. Any chance you'd be willing to do the same for mine? I'm going for my master's in special education.
  3. How long have you been out of unergrad? I think that makes a huge difference. If you've been out of school a few years your supervisor would be best able to speak to who you are and what kind of candidate you are now. Also, I would think if all of your other recommenders are in the field 1 outside would be ok as long as the outside one was really strong. You could discuss with your letter writer that it is important to stress the areas where there is a connection. For instance in IT you probably had to do a lot or problem solving and critical thinking which could connect to the biology degree. Also, I could be wrong, but I would think biology would involve a fair amount of data analysis and having someone talk about your strength in that area could be really helpful to your application.
  4. Hi, I had the same problem as you. I graduated in 2008 and hadn't had any contact with my undergrad professors since then. I just sent a simple email asking them how they were and then saying that I was applying to graduate school and was hoping they'd write a rec. I added that if they didn't remember me or didn't feel comfortable writing the letter as it had been too long that would be fine. I also offered to send my SOP and my resume and any other documents they might find helpful. The profs said yes and asked for the sop and resume. I'd leave out GPA but you could probably mention a class or two you had with him to jog his memory. I was super nervous as well but you'll feel 100 times better once you've sent the email. Actually, that's a lie. You'll feel 100 times better after you've gotten a response.
  5. Hi Avena, I'm working on applications for my master's in special education, a somewhat related field. I get what you are saying about feeling like your application experience is different, I definitely feel that way with sped sometimes. I know you're looking for someone in social work but if you don't find anyone hit me up and I'll look over your statement. Good luck!
  6. Hey mewho, My first suggestion would be to look at the prompts of the schools where you want to apply (or think you want to apply). Some may ask for your specific reasons and others may not. After reading a few prompts you may get a better idea. I'm applying in the field of Special Education and I found the requirements for SoPs were really diverse. Some wanted me to focus on goals for the future and others on my personal/academic history. The prompts should be on program websites. Good luck!
  7. Hi Yuki! I don't know anything about petroleum engineering so I wouldn't be able to say much on the content but I would be happy to edit it to ensure the English is correct.
  8. I wouldn't mention your ugrad gpa as it isn't really relevant at this point and your MA gpa is on record so I wouldn't go into it. I'd also agree that since all your awards, publications and conferences are on our CV it isn't really necessary to go through them all. As for the closing I'm having the same struggle. Everything I try just sounds blah and kind of ruins the flow of the sop.
  9. I was hoping I could get someone merciless to review my SOP. I'm applying for my master's in Special Education. Please message me if you'd be willing to help. I'd be happy to review yours in turn. Thanks!
  10. Hi all, I recently sent out all my requests for LoRs and was just curious how long it took from request to response for everyone else. I'm nowhere near the point to be nervous or freaking out or anything, I just wanted to get an idea. Thanks!
  11. Hi all, I was wondering if I could get some sage advice on asking for an LoR. I'm a special education teacher and I'm planning on going for master's in the same field. I really want to ask my current principal for a recommendation as she has worked closely with me and has a background in Sped. We haven't, however, ever talked about my future before and I think she assumes I will be staying at the school for sometime (this is only my second year there). I know she will be disappointed that I'm leaving. What is the best way to approach her and ask for the rec.?
  12. Hi Pwuny, I tried to get to your doc to help you revise it but it said it hadn't been published. Try again and I'd be happy to go over it.
