  1. I think what would be more helpful in your application, depending on the quality of program you want to attend, is upping your GRE score since your GPA is very low. That is if you want to have your graduate studies paid for through a TA/RA/GA
  2. It always leads to sex. JUST KIDDING(not really). I lived with 3 girls(i'm a dude) in NYC for a few months, they were pretty good roommates. My current roommate is a girl and she turned this house to jerry springer(boyfriend baby mamma ect..). Overall I'd say i've had more problems in same sex living arrangements than opposite sex.
  3. I THINK THAT ANY PROGRAM THAT ACCEPTS STUDENTS WHO USE THIS MANY CAPS IS A REALLY GREAT THING. HISTORY HAS SHOWN US THAT CAPS ARE REALLY POWERFUL. THEY CLEARLY KNOW THEIR HISTORY.
  4. I think the best choice is neither. Don't pay for graduate school.
  5. Weeks then months pass and I hadn't mentioned us revising the report because I honestly was quite busy and figured when I could devote some time to dealing with these people I would. I am not saying what they did wasn't wrong, but holy cow. If i felt out of the loop for more than a week I would have made noise. I don't really think think you can say they "denied" your input when you waited so long to give it anyway. As someone who tends to take the "lead" in group projects, I tend to try and delegate assignments so this type of thing happens, but you are an adult, a professional student since you are there by choice. Act like it. We recently had a group lab report due, and one of the students (the only PhD student mind you) would never speak up or offer to help on the assignment. Eventually, after maybe two weeks, we asked him to edit format and make all the citations for the report (rather lengthy job imo, but he had done nothing to this point). He did it all wrong, was a crap job, and it ended up more work for us in the long run. Perhaps you can look at it from their point of view; Maybe the work you previously did was not up to par and they were saving themselves work. That isnt fair for them to just "overrun" you, but again, you are a professional student and need to act and perform like it. People aren't going to hold your hand. This isn't grade school. Next time you do a group project, clearly define your terms and boundaries.
  6. You are sponsored by a company, so that will help, but IMO those scores are not competitive. you should want a 4 or a 4.5 minimum.
  7. Hey masters, if your GPA drops below 3.0 you will not be able to enter the graduate school if thats their minimum requirement. Other than that I dont think it will be too bad.
  8. What is the goal after the PhD? It is likely that the education at school you were accepted to is good, but perhaps not adequate for your dreams ( rankings do somewhat matter for academia, and my perception of the english phd job market is that it is very saturated). I think it would be very easy for you to have a fulfilling teaching job with that PhD in hand, perhaps at a community college or even a Private HS. All my HS teachers had masters and PhDs , it was really great for us students there. I'm not really sure you can improve your application after completing a masters. Thats kinda the last stop, unfortunately. If the offer is funded, you might want to take if you want to complete a PhD.
  9. Why do u have to make a decision by april 15th if there is no funding attached ?
  10. I think its very telling that you would have to "call" NYU when you've been apart of their department. Surely there is someone there you are friendly with. if i ever have a problem i could just walk into 1 of 5 professors at my current schools office no notice needed. Maybe NYU is a bit different, but its been that way no matter where i've been. Getting into a PhD program can be as much about stats as it is being likeable. Not saying you arent, but perhaps you just havent networked enough ?
  11. It depends on your overall GPA; if you were a cusp candidate and this lowers your overall average under a 3.0 it could actually be really bad.
  12. Does your advisor know the person? I think your advisor would be pretty sympathetic to your plight, given that you would only try and transfer to that school. You'll need to apply like everyone else though. You might contact them (after you talk to your advisor) to see if they have a spot. You are going to have to let them know. Another place you might post is on academia.stackexchange.com I think the advise there will be a bit better since there are professors at high ranking depts that respond to posts, and might better know the situation.
  13. Its a commuter school, with most people in the graduate school doing part time masters while doing a job (teachers). The one nice thing about Long Beach is downtown is pretty cool, especially near the peer. It also has probably the best public transit in the LA area. my dad worked in downtown longbeach for a while, and i grew up about 30 minute drive from there. I cant really comment on the social scene in terms of the college, but the bars down there are nice. Residents of long beach tend to be younger than the surrounding area. There aren't many unsafe parts but there are also not many very nice parts. Its a nice mix of beach city and urban. There are also some incredible restaurants down there.
  14. I emailed them but they havent got back to me =\. perhaps ill call tomorrow.
  15. it might mean that you will not hear until all the first round has accepted (likely near or after april 15th). My friend got into U Chicago in may, so still hold hope!
  16. I think you will find UCLAs pay scale a little better, on the order of 2k a month (judging by what other UCs pay). That will still be tough, but imo, doable especially if you are willing to live a little further away (like palms, culver city).
  17. I think thats going to be real tough, even with roommates. Also, UCLA is in a super nice part of town, one of the more expensive areas, so it might be difficult finding housing close. You might want to contact current graduate students there, what their pay is, and how they live. I think that might be the best course of action. I'd personally lose the car, even though LA's public transport isnt the best. It would make it more livable, since gas is exensive and you would likely have to commute further. My mom commutes from Redondo Beach to Santa Monica every day (places in la), about 10 miles, and it takes 45 minutes and sometimes more during rush hour.
  18. Cool, I'm guessing they do individual leases then and roommate match people?
  19. so internet is not provided (i guess thats asking too much for the price)? Basically its rent + electric, water, internet ?
  20. Thanks, I think i'll sign a lease there. I'll call them tomorrow. That means its in north davis since its near trader joes ?
  21. I think you are wrong; The school i'm currently at is unranked with 0 oil connections and 2 people in my lab (we are a seismology and geodynamics lab, with no industry training but more geared towards academia and pure research) who were international students from india found a job. One took a bit longer to find a job, but he moved to houston after he graduated and found a nice home. It was difficult, and he had maybe 20 interviews, but he finally got a job. He probably would have got one earlier if he practiced interviewing before hand. There is a plethora of oil jobs all over the USA, if that is where you desire to live, and finding a job is more likely derivative of your skills and intellect and less about where you come from. Sure top schools will place easier, but there is definitely enough to go around right now.
  22. U arizona is a great earthscience school. Purdue isn't in the realm of U arizona. Why is this a debate ?
  23. i'd do it. what ever. life is short
  24. I got my school to guarantee me the first summer funding (the original offer was 9 months / 5 years). That will give me enough time to write a grant/ get an external fellowship for the 2nd summer and on. I suggest something like that.
  25. 1. Professional Basketball Player: 5 5' and jewish so not happening 2. Kobe Bryant See above 3. Scientist Am one. 4. Politician
